    - PC3000 What happens if you have a hard disk which spins erratically, or the heads are making clicking noises, or maybe everything seems fine but the disk is just not recognized by the PC or any other tool? Since you don't have access to the disk you may conclude that it is due to the controller board failure or some mechanical or physical damage, and whatever you try to do to fix the drive is then driven simply by your intuition because you have no information about the status of a drive that is simply not recognized by your utilities. But help is at hand, because the PC3000 is a unique tool that can communicate with the drive in such situations by using vendor specific commands to switch the drive into kernel mode - the one that is used by the manufacturer to provide read/write access to the firmware on the controller board and firmware modules, such as Microcode Overlays, HDD Configuration Tables, Defects Tables, SMART Attributes, Security Subsystem, Adaptives, etc., stored at the disk service area (maintenance track) at negative cylinders. When the drive is not recognized by the PC, it basically means that the HDD cannot boot up properly due to electrical failure, mechanical/physical damage or corruption of the firmware modules on the controller or the disk service area (maintenance track). By using PC3000 you can diagnose the drive and determine exactly what is causing the failure. Furthermore, in our experience more than 50% of such failures (and for some particular HDD models over 90%) are due to firmware related problems that can be resolved using PC3000. You can simply reload firmware modules onto the damaged drive or just use one of the PC3000 built-in fixes available for the most common failures of the particular HDD model, such as Fujitsu MPG's firmware damage, Maxtor's G-List/P-List corruption (e.g. 'Maxtor N40P' and 'Maxtor Athena' family), Western Digital's S.M.A.R.T. counters overflow and others.     - Apparently insoluble windows protection fault! Hi everyone, My windows ME pc has developed a 'Windows protection fault. Please restart your computer. System halted.' It was fine at 8pm Friday and Saturday morning, nothing. I have run through the troubleshooting article (273738) all to no avial. Safe mode works fine, my boot disk works fine and my install disk of windows ME also boots the PC up ready for a fresh install. 3 things I am a bit concerned about i) scanreg /restore tells me that no restore points exist!!??!! ii) The 'Launch System Restore' button in msconfig tells me 'System restore cannot protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and try system restore again.' iii) Periodically scandisk keeps telling me that the reported free space on my C and D HD's is incorrect. Even if I take it up on the offer to fix the problems they see to come back. Scandisk reveals no other problems on either drive. I am getting to the end of my tether with this now. If I have to reinstall windows ME it won't be a problem but I cannot understand why if safe mode works this should make any difference. Any advice would be welcome. Tag: reformat or not Tag: 272521

    - firewall hello. after logging in. i click on mozilla firefox went to my regular site and next to it read zone labs: vsmon lock up server it proceeded to giving instructions on getting internet acess any other site like aol or msn or whateveer there was no problem. i looked further and went to default (not sign in) click mozilla ,went to same web page and did not receive above notice from ez.. back in sign in area the instruction ask i restart several times ... nothing happen.. next step to rename in search files. from "internet logs" to "oldlogs" i was unable to use quotes when renaming files. reboot now it does not appear in toolbar. although i am able to reach my website on ei , i am comfortable using firefox. any suggestions... thanks Tag: reformat or not Tag: 272515

    - comctl32.dll My desktop running windows ME is not starting . It was running the best it had in months and then started freezing this week and I had to shut it down manually a few times. When I started it today, it went thru a scan and then showed a blue screen with error message: comctl32.dll file cannot start. check file to determine problem. then I had to shut it down manually. How do I get to that file and how do I check what's wrong. Is there something called an SFC with windows ME and will this help. In reading various start up problems on the MS site I found directions for SFC but it was for XP. And it wasn't the same problem but I thought ME also had a SFC.     - Can't delete un-needed file via explorer? I am try to help my daughter who is getting an error msg "low disk space". I told her to do a cleanup and then delete her log files and txt files to give her more room. Also her temp folder, and internet temp folder.     - Windows Temp Files I am having some trouble and it's driving me batty. I use Windows ME I always keep the folder cleaned out daily. I tried to delete all files in my TEMP folder and there is one that it won't let me delete. The file is just a image file. It gives me an message "Can't delete file may be in use." (I have also tried to rename it and moving it) So what I did was tried to delete the rest not including it and then I will get another file that is says, is in use also a image file. Then It won't let me just close the window I have to do the Alt Ctrl Del and end task. Then open it again. Then it will let me delete some more of the others. Until it stops again.     - CD writer disappears during/after burning - returns on reboot Win Me Pentium lll 866 128 ram built-in graphics and sound chip AC97 I have just started having an odd problem. When burning an SVCD (or anything else) with my Magix Movies 2 CD and DVD program (which I have used for the last year without problems), it has started doing odd things (I am transferring wmv files to disk). It will say "no burner found" when reaching the "write to disk stage. As I say, it has been working fine up to two days ago (in fact I had burned over a dozen disks the previous few days). Sometimes it will burn one and then, when trying to burn a second disk, the CD burner disappears and it reports "no burning device). It's gone from the device manager screen! (it was in "my computer" before I tried burning - and no problems shown in device mamnager). It comes back if I reboot. I can't figure what is causing this. I have tried System Restore to a time without problems but that doesn't fix it. I have also scanned for a virus or spyware - again clear. I have also tried reinstalling the program. Again, no results. The only strange thing that has happened is that when after first did this (well it just stopped working with no error report) , I went to msconfig (I was going to check the startup folder in case anything had slipped in there) and it reported "variables found in system.ini or autoexec.bat. Tansferring to registry". I don't know why or what happened but presume that that is where the problem originated. It in't a message I have had before Can anyone help me to sort this out please?     - Migrating very large files over a LAN I am having a difficult time moving 4x1GB files over my 100MB LAN. One machine is XP Pro ( a notebook ) And the other machine is ME ( a desktop ) Until I can afford a faster PC, my work PC will have to suffice for ripping DVDs, and I want copy those files over. I tried setting up a share, and using Explorer to copy it over, but that does not seem to work. It started, but never finished. So, I heard that NetMeeting had an FTP client built in, so I tried that. Well, NetMeeting crashed on my ME machine, causing a GDI error in "conf", and it wouldn't even load on the XP, telling me that version 3.01 will not work - at all. So maybe NetMeeting's time has come and gone? Did I miss that? So, I have an old copy of WS_FTP Pro, which is an FTP client. I just checked, and it works fine. (It's installed on my ME machine) And then I went to a website that showed me how to enable FTP to a share on my notebook XP Pro computer. Which I did ( did I? I never setup a login or anything ) according to one person's opinion. I know that I set the share up properly because I can see it on the other machine. The question is, my WS_FTP Pro, trying to connect to the shared file(s) on 255.255.255.255:21 did not seem to work. Causing a "Connect failure". It's really a miner irritant only, but one that I'd like to know more about. And I reckon here on the Internet someone must know something. Well, thanks again for looking.     - Sudden ME problem I have a sudden problem with my Windows ME PC that I believe is a Registry issue. A Norton Anti Virus Scan shows nothing. Symtons: 1. All MS Office programs don't load(WORK,EXCEL Access etc.). Error message: Action only valid for products that are currently installed. 2. Desktop colors etc. changed all of a sudden. 3. MS related registry settings lost. Internet worked like a new computer and wanted to reinstall. (but I could "ping" the outside world) I lost my Outlook Express settings & emails.     - ME reinstall I''ve been experiencing lots of problems but I got to a point of the extracting vmm32.vxd from my win cd and almost getting it to boot. It's stuck in a safemode loop...when I start it up it goes into safemode and says the pc didn't start properly last time so use safemode. The only problem is it doesn't go into safemode but just restarts back to the safemode menu. Any ideas on that? I was going to breakdown and check reinstalling windows with the cd that came with my pc. It won't let me. I am following the guide that came with the pc and reinstallation cd.     - reply ASAP, Virus problem Dear Sir/Madam, I am posting this on behalf of a colleague who cannot access the internet. Last week, my colleague got a virus on his computer. This was despite having Norton anti-virus 2003 AND a firewall. He doesn't understand how the virus could have managed this, and to be frank I cannot either, but I know he isn't lying! This virus disabled his Norton2003 and the firewall, before taking total control of his computer. He now has around 100 viruses on his computer and doesn't know what to do. He used to be able to access his files in Safe Mode, but now even in Safe Mode the computer is going ballistic and will not allow him to access his files. So I just wanted to ask the following questions: 1. Is there any way he can regain control of his computer? (without losing his files) 2. If no, then is there any way he can regain control of the computer after losing all his files? 3. I suggested to him that perhaps he could try restoring it to factory settings. He would lose all his files I know, but would it wipe off the viruses? Also, how do you restore it to factory settings, is it done through the BIOS? What key do you press on keyboard to get into BIOS on Windows ME? If you have any suggestions, please do go ahead and say because my colleague is in a bit of a mess right now. He's desperate to get back control of his computer, he's even saying that he thinks hes got one of those viruses that tell the creator of the virus everything the user is doing, and every single key on keyboard he even presses.     - scandisk can't fix error My previous post "Boot prob coincides with AVG update" gives some background but I've got better info now. If I wait long enough for it to process I can use my bootdisk to startup to get a prompt to run scandisk. I get "scandisk found an error when trying to read cluster 18768. Scandisk will attempt to continue past this error. Run surface scan when prompted" It's stopping 36% through checking directory structure giving me this message and never getting further. When I tried scanreg /restore I get data error reading drive c. So my question is...Is it going to possibly help to reinstall ME or is my drive so damaged that I would ruin my chances of recovering what's on it? Here's my first very scattered post: After AVG update prompted restart the pc hung on WinME splashscreen. After several attempts I decided to use the boot disk. Last time I did so I was able to use option 1 to get to some helpful info but this time it didn't fully proceed after I selected option 1. Options 2,3, and 4 - Booting with or without CD rom support and minimal boot don't give me a prompt or boot. I get A: and can cd to C: using F5 "safemode" and Shift-F5 "command prompt". But when I typed scanreg /restore I got "data error reading drive c". Now when I start without the boot disk it hangs on a flashing cursor. After about 10 mins it will go to the winme splashscreen and hang. I just happend to notice this because I left the pc on while reading and posting here. I almost thought it was going to boot, but drat no. The error reading c has me alarmed. I didn't get the %1%2 error so I havent tried to remane wininit but did consider it. The only problem is Im not sure exactly where it is and can't remember DOS to get the dir by page. It involved | (pipe?...on the \ key) so if I should rename wininit Ill need that info too. I fear reinstalling WinME. Is there a way to do it, if I need to, that preserves my other files (yeah there's some unbacked-up stuff). It's weird, the pc seems to be in very slow motion. I just tried starting in safemode without the boot disk and after several minutes got the usual options but normal and safemode attempts hang on the winme splashscreen. What could this be?     - Reload WINME from OEM hard drive CAB files I have a Compaq Presario 5006CA that over the last several months has slowly been acting up, i.e. rebooting after shutdown started, locking up after shutdown started, system freezing for 30 or so seconds while surfing the net and, most recently, video display problems. My video settings were locked at 16 color 640x480 resolution. After trying to change them to anything else and after rebooting nothing gets changed. Also, my mouse would not work in normal bootup, only selective bootup with my system.ini file disabled. A local computer store advised to uninstall my video drivers and to delete a few files and then to reboot. This would cause to computer to want new drivers, which I would direct to the c:\cpqdrv\nvidia folder. This was BAD advice. Now I cannot boot up at all. I get the Compaq screen and the WINME screen but then the system just keeps rebooting over and over and over..... Using the startup disk and booting under safe mode does the same thing. I cannot load windows AT ALL!!!^%$~@ I don't want to lose any photos, etc on hard drive so factory restore on my Recovery CD is not an option. I just want to reload WINME from my hard drive CAB files. I can get to C:\ and can access folders that way so I figure this may be an option. One of the files I had to extract was VMM32. I guess that was one of the files that was deleted. If any other files need to be extracted I will certainly give it a try or if reloading WINME is easier in an attempt to address the other issues I would try that as well.     - Sound fixed ! Several weeks ago I posted about a problem with sound on my ME machine. The sound had mysteriously stopped working. The Sound device was reported as working properly, but no sound playback device was shown in the sound properties with options greyed out, and there no speaker icon in the system tray. I tried all the suggested fixes and more, with no success. I renewed my search for a fix today aand have just happened on another suggested fix. This has worked. These lines had become missing from system.ini (boot section) presumably due to some corruption. drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv sound.drv=mmsound.drv on restoring these lines and rebooting all is now well :) There was also a loaad of html code planted at the beginning of the system.ini file which seems to confirm the corruption. I don't know if this is a WindowsMe thing or what but since I reinstalled that operating system everything I put onto a CD-RW becomes "read only" in the property attributes and it ignores all atempts to remove that particular attribute... I can take files off the CD and then change the attribute but I cannot change the properties of anything that's on the CD-RW itself.     - Repeated 828026 I had a total failure on my C: drive a week or so back. I've reloaded ME and all done all the updates. But KB828026 keeps coming up every day via automatic update. An oddity is that, if I open Windows Update directly, IT reports no updates available. If I look up the log there it tells me the 828026 has been successfully applied. I googled this news group and found a thread a while ago on this issue, and tried some of the suggestions there, without success. Is there a final, definitive way to stop this one?     - boot problem coincides with AVG update After AVG update prompted restart the pc hung on WinME splashscreen. After several attempts I decided to use the boot disk. Last time I did so I was able to use option 1 to get to some helpful info but this time it didn't fully proceed after I selected option 1. Options 2,3, and 4 - Booting with or without CD rom support and minimal boot don't give me a prompt or boot. I get A: and can cd to C: using F5 "safemode" and Shift-F5 "command prompt". But when I typed scanreg /restore I got "data error reading drive c". Now when I start without the boot disk it hangs on a flashing cursor. After about 10 mins it will go to the winme splashscreen and hang. I just happend to notice this because I left the pc on while reading and posting here. I almost thought it was going to boot, but drat no. The error reading c has me alarmed. I didn't get the %1%2 error so I havent tried to remane wininit but did consider it. The only problem is Im not sure exactly where it is and can't remember DOS to get the dir by page. It involved | (pipe?...on the \ key) so if I should rename wininit Ill need that info too. I fear reinstalling WinME. Is there a way to do it, if I need to, that preserves my other files (yeah there's some unbacked-up stuff). It's weird, the pc seems to be in very slow motion. I just tried starting in safemode without the boot disk and after several minutes got the usual options but normal and safemode attempts hang on the winme splashscreen. What could this be?     - Short File Name Anomaly I used to backup my Windows Me system using tar/gzip from linux, to CDs. About a year ago this failed to restore to workability, when I upgraded Norton Internet Security to 2004. In another newsgroup I read about the short filename anomalies, where Windows does unexpected things to short file names. I used the linux partimage program to make backups of my bootable partition. A few weeks ago I upgraded Norton again, to 2005, and found a tar/gzip backup failed to restore properly. Again, only Norton IS had a problem I could see, but I didn't look much farther. I went looking at my C: drive from the dos prompt, and noticed something strange in the PROGRA~1 folder. There was only one Norton Internet Security folder there, but its' short filename was NORTON~2!!! This was on the C: partition I had upgraded NIS to 2005 on - incidentally, only a little bit messy, no real major problems - but I would hate to try to explain it step by step. When things get screwy, reboot. I checked my restored C: partition, and found I had a NORTON~1 folder with a long name of Norton Internet Security. And no Norton Anti Virus. So I renamed the NORTON~1 Norton Internet Security to NORTON~2 Norton Internet Security, reboot, and everything seemed fine, back to identical with the original C: partition! The first way I tried was to copy the NORTON~1 folder directory to another folder, add a '1' to the long name, and copy it back. That worked, but I was thinking that maybe someday Symantec will figure it out too, and change something. I found that every time I changed the lfn (Long filename) with Windows Explorer, the sfn (short filename) suffix would either increment or decrement. So I changed the lfn three times, on the last time back to a lfn of Norton Internet Security, and that gave me a sfn of NORTON~2. I'm not regularly using the restored C: partition yet, I don't like the way tar/gzip or the kernel loses my file creation dates. I don't imagine I'm the only one who has ever played with filenames in this context, and would really like to hear from others, before tenatively commiting to using this little tweak.
