    - installing MILLENNIUM EDITION PROBLEM on installing the me windows a message comes up to say that an upgraded version of the me installation is required. it then stops. but however i can run the trainer ie interactive teaching section of it. also i was told to go to msdos and enter C:\windows> the type ren win. com win.bak then runsetup again. i have tried this, but it doesn't work. When I restart the computer, I get error Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1:%2. Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting. Windows may not start or run properly. I am able to reboot, but when I go back to windows update site, it says I still need the critical updates. I try again and again, but am never able to get them... I am able to update my antivirus software and other programs, just not Me critical updates. I found the Microsoft web page that says the solution is to find the Wininit.ini and rename to Wininit.old and restart. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;283069 I do not have Wininit.ini.     - Device Manager For as few days now, Device Manager when opened has started the dial up connection, today I let it complete the connection & then clicked ok, it doesn't now want to connect to the internet any more, I wonder what it downloaded, whatever it was it took less than a second.     - WindowsME constantly crashing: details Hi Firstly, i am very sorry for this lengthy posting but I dont think anyone will be able to help without considerable detail. A friend has asked me to reinstall Windows ME on his computer following someone trying to put a copy of Windows XP on it. Obviously that was never going to work because of the protection Microsoft have put in XP (use on one computer only). So this totaly messed up his computer. Previously his Windows ME worked OK. So he asked me to re-install his Windows ME. I have installed ME many times without any problems. This time I have a major problem with Windows ME constantly crashing on his computer. I have done a "clean" install after re-formating the C: drive, to get rid of all the XP etc. Sometimes Windows ME works OK for several hours. Other times I get a whole variety of error messages and sometimes it locks on the destop after a short period of inactivity. Following a restart and scandisk it may restart OK but on occasions it wont even start in Safe Mode. I have to use my start up disk and use scanreg /restore and once I am back in Windows sometimes I then need to use Restore (fortunately I have set up several handy restore points). Basically it is very very unstable. I have read as much as i can find on the Microsoft Database and I have tried reducing hardware acceleration. Also I have tested my memory with DocMemory which tests OK. I have re-installed it several times. The problems occur immediately after installation. I have d/l and installed all the microsoft updates. I have very little running on startup.     - Win Media Player 9 and Codecs I downloaded a movie with an .avi extension and tried to play it in WMP9.     - Not being able to open attachments I am running windows ME on a laptop that has OE 6.0 and have been unable to open attachements on a regular basis. Some are opened OK and others show OE message that it has not allowed the opening of the attachment due the possbility of a virus. When I forward the e-mail to my desktop (running WIndows 95 and OE 5.5 I am able to open the attachments, usually .doc or .eml files). How can I change the settings on OE 6.0 to give me more flexibility to open these types of attachments?     - System Restore Failed On a couple of occasions recently I have tried to use System Restore when three or four restore points are shown to be available. The restores have failed with the message "System restore failed to restore your computer. Please try another Restore point" (wording may not be exact). Choosing a different point had no effect. I either get msg that there are crirically low resources or a Windows protection error. In case of resources critically low cannot select "ignore" have to select "close".     - not sure what the problem is I have Internet Explorer 6 on my computer. It is difficult to connect if my computer has been inactive for a while. You have to either shut down the computer and wait a minute or two and then try to connect or restart the computer. Then you can keep an internet connection for about 30 minutes sometimes more sometimes less. I have had my phone lines tested and they are fine. I have called my ISP for tech support and they say it's not them with the problem maybe its me. What would be causing this?     - What is MPREXE.exe ? I just installed Norton Personal Firewall on PC with Windows ME and have RoadRunner internet service (cable modem). A security alert has popped up about 20 times now for MPREXE.exe trying to access IP addresses on the internet on port 137. Each time I set a rule to block access to that specific program and IP address. After about 20 times of blocking access, each to a different IP address, I set a rule to block all access to all IP addresses and all ports. I did a reverse IP address lookup for some of the addresses and found some in the U.S. and one in Korea (I didn't recognize any of the site names and didn't go to any of them). MPREXE.exe is a small (28k) program file in the c:\windows\system32 folder. Does anyone know what it is and why it wants so much access to the internet?
