    - defrag errors When I try to run defrag it keeps restarting saying "hard disk changed" or something to that affect. This is the first time it has done that.     - ran defrag - lost everything Two days ago I ran disc defrag, then shut down the computer ... the next morning it started in safe mode only, most program files won't open. And when I click on 'my computer' the D and E drives don't appear, so I can't run my system restore discs. Can't get online with it, either. Last week I downloaded some critical updates from Microsoft, and I have a feeling this is related to the problem. Don't know which ones were downloaded. Happened to do a virus scan the same day this happened and nothing was found. Was able to run 'thorough' scandisk last night and no errors detected. Ran spybot this morning.     - Norton AV I am running ME. Have 2 HDs WD40g and WD80g. The 80 is a copy of the 40 using Western Digital EZ-Install. When I try to do a virus scan using NAV the 80g goes into a seemingly endless loop finding multiple non existant subfolders in Windows\Application Data\Earthlink\Media\. The 40g drive does not do this. NAV scans and finds no virus, etc. on it. Deleting this folder on the 80 and copying it from the 40 yields the same problem. ????     - Right-clicking, etc. attempts to connecting to Internet I've been trying to solve this problem for months with no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Here it goes: Anytime I right-click (alternate-click) a file or icon, the right-click menu takes 20 - 30 seconds to appear and I notice that the Internet is being queried. This also happens when I have an Explorer window open and I left-click on the "File" menu. I'm using a 56K dial-up connection that is not always connected so this is extremely frustrating. I'm running Windows ME. I have Zone Alarm Pro and Norton SystemWorks 2003 loaded but can't find any info on their web sites to indicate that they may be the problem.     - Help! Windows Explorer... When I look into windows explorer and click on the "folders" feild to get that nice little list to the left of all your folders it doesn't appear. All I get is a gray box yet when I click on the search or history feild it works fine and if I try to click on the folders field again after using search or history then the box will copy the search or history traits and not change although it will be on folder.     - Problems, crashed again..... Hi Guys...... I have been heavily using this computer for 2 days looking up hotels in England (a lot of graphics).....so after the coincidental crash with Heirloom's attachment, did a Safe Mode scandisk and defrag......it did take quite a while.....90 minutes at least. Rebooted and decided to plug in my new card reader for the digital camera......got a few missing file or dll errors. I didn't write them down, but they were USB ones....like the fellow had when trying to load the software for his Pentax. So I clicked on Skip It.....got a couple more and cancelled it. I took the card reader out of the USB port.....and wham, the whole damn thing went dead on me!! Ron said the screen just went black.....no warning...nothing. Monitor and speaker lights were still on. Checked everything and could not get the CPU to come on. Finally it did after maybe 10 or 15 minutes. Seems to be working OK now. Icons were splattered all over the screen just like when I came out of Safe Mode....and Scandisk ran. Perhaps I tried putting the new card reader on too soon after the defrag? Has to be something to do with that. Only other thing I have put on in the past few days is the IconCache. Screen was freezing on me last night and had to reboot a couple of times. I put IconCache on because the icons were slow to 'fill in'. I never could write a short post.....sorry about that. But want to make sure this 'baby' is not having major problems. I probably need new video drivers......and I am about ready to upgrade to XP!!! Scared the hell out of me, it did. As usual.....I get the weird problems. I am bombarded with Ads. I'm looking for a way in
Windows to no allow executables to be downloaded from the
internet AND/OR does not allow services to automatically
get loaded or start on reboot.

Such errors are often caused by spyware - download AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
