My pc came with windows me loaded and I do not have cd. I
am looking for files contained in the precopy1.cab folder
to get 4 files needed to be able to use a digital camera.
usbmphip.pfr
usbntmap.sys
vmm32.vxd
usbstor.sys

It is for a mass storage driver. Any suggestions how to
get these? I can see that they are help in the
precopy1.cab folder which you can get to only if you have
a windows me cd. It is not on a PC that comes with it
preloaded! grrrrrrr!
Thanks, Mary

Look in C:\Windows\Options\CABS (or - much less likely - Options\Install)

Do NOT, repeat NOT, attempt to use the copy of vmm32.vxd contained in the Win
Me cab set. This is only a stub file with the correct vmm32.vxd for your
system being built when the operating system was first installed. There is
not need for you to replace this file, your current system wouldn't be running
now if vmm32.vxd was missing.

usbntmap.sys and usbstor.sys are, with most other usb related files, in the
"cab" files in the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and/or in a sub-folder of
Windows\Options and not directly visible in Explorer. Look for the folder
containing the file BASE2.CAB. When the installer asks for files point it
towards the folder containing the file BASE2.CAB.

See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows
Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371) for details of how to manually
extract files from the cab set. Alternatively use MSConfig |
General | Extract File... and follow the prompts to extract a new copy of the
required files to your windows\system32\drivers folder . Most USB related
files can be found in BASE2.CAB although some are located in other cabs.

Alternatively you could visit http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/63/63237.htm
and download usb-WinMe.exe which contains WinMe's usb related files. Extract
the files you want and put them in windows\system32\drivers.

Hm, I was less than vigilant there, it would seem!

Let's hope Joe didn't replace vmm32.vxd otherwise he'll be posting back asking
for instructions on how to use system restore from a DOS prompt. What has
long intrigued me is that vmm32.vxd isn't protected against replacement by
SFP. The file's not even "in use" whilst the system is running meaning that
it can be easily deleted or replaced whilst the system is running.

Indeed. A lesson to read the whole post!

Yes, I found that out long ago now. At the time I assumed it would be kosher
because it *could* be replaced.

btw Mike, have you got the latest non-public SP2 beta? I'm not at all
pleased to be denied access to it.

Let's also hope Mary didn't, Mike! ;-)

Yes. Remember that not all beta builds are made available publicly and this
build is targeting one specific area and apparently contains few other
changes.

I'd like to know if the bug I reported was fixed. Not sure why I bother
otherwise. And you're not allowed to tell me. Anyway it's the one where you
use Send To Desktop (Create Shortcut), move the target file, d-click the
shortcut and instead of searching for the moved file it associates itself
with the folder the file was moved from. But don't tell me. I've got another
2 litres of Roussillon coming tomorrow and I'll settle for that <vbg>!

Your bug: I've no idea as to whether it might have been fixed or not. I
don't have the build running at the moment but will check it out for you later
but, as I said, this build apparently has no bug fixes but instead is just
concentrating on one small area of the OS.
