    - Repeat Windows Media Player 9 Updates [WinMe PC with all updates] After updating Windows Media Player 9 (when Windows Media Player notifies me updates are available) I install the update without a problem, reboot, launch media player and have it check for updates again and it shows updates are available again. It appears it wants to download the same update (by the size of the update--1M) again. I've installed this update 3 or four times with the same results. What's going on? BTW:This doesn't happen on our WinXP Home PC, only on our WinMe PC. *But* at dslreports.com in the MS Help forum another person with XP is having the exact same problem (link below). http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,9418677~mode=flat Tag: passwords Tag: 230492

    - Swapping mobo in ME almost good but not quite........ Well, I swapped motherboards in a buddy's system using WinME. I did the Hkey/Localmachine/enum trick, but when I booted regularly the first time, ME found a lot of stuff, then I installed the motherboard's CD, then, lastly, I installed the video card CD and it's up and running. But.........2 problems........ #1.) Device manager shows a bunch of duplicates.....(mouse, keyboard, then a bunch of duplicates under "system devices"......like system speaker, DMA, enumerator, etc. etc.) If I remove them, they simply are all refound again. (tried several times now) #2.) No audio whatsoever. It shows AC'97 loaded correctly and shows no conflicts, but I don't even see a speaker in the clock tray and if I remove & try to reinstall either from ME's CAB files or the mobo CD, I still have no sound. I've basically commited to formatting & re-installing so this is just a last ditch effort for ny resolutions before I hit the "Y" key.....<G>! TIA Tag: passwords Tag: 230491

    - Multiple Network Printers I didn't post this question to the network NG because I feel it is more an OS issue. I have a home network with one ME machine and one XP machine. The ME machine has a LPT1 laser jet printer and there is also a USB printer. When I open the MSHome Network it show 9 instances of printers. The LPT1 is shown as Printer and the other 8 printers are the USB printer. On the ME machine, There are just two printers installed and the properties shows the USB as sharing #9. Confusing huh?     - mxavlsp.dll errors I recently installed a new "fix-it" program and it sure didn't fix anything. I am now getting 3 error messages, all involving mxavlsp.dll. Explores has caused an error in mxa..., ndetect has caused... and ndetect has caused... At the bottom it says if this problem persists, you may have to restart. Restarting does no good. Dear All, a customer of mine has got a windows millenium edition and has applied latest IE's hot fix, so the authentication method http://username:password@server.domain.com does not run anymore. There is an article (834489) about registry modification in order to permit the above method: the customer has applied the workaround but system does not run anymore, the behaviour is like system is going to reconfigure completely (searching new hardware has started) Fortunately, he has got several system restore points...     - What is MS_WebcheckMonitor? I recently installed and ran a free program called "Karen's Window Watcher". What the program does is to display the titlebar text of all open windows, including windows that are not visible. In looking at the resulting list, I noticed a hidden window named "MS_WebcheckMonitor" and since I don't like being "monitored", I decided to find out more aboutit. Apparently, it's a window run by: Module File Name: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WEBCHECK.DLL More research indicated that at boot time the following executable: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LOADWC.EXE loads webcheck.dll into memory, where it stays throughout the Windows session, apparently wasting system resources. The Microsoft website tersely says the following about the module: "This object manages subscriptions." They also describe the loadwc.exe program as follows: "Loadwc.exe, also known as Load WebCheck, customizes some of the settings in Internet Explorer. Loadwc.exe adds, removes, and updates subscriptions. Loadwc.exe also propagates settings for user profiles." Whatever is meant by "propagate" in this context, I haven't a clue. I don't use subscriptions and I'm the only user on this computer. Thus, I can see no possible reason I'd need the webcheck.dll file loaded in system memory all the time.     - Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Alt+Tab Sorry but I have one more question for you guys. Most of the time pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously will do nothing. The same goes for Alt+Tab.     - hard disk too large Pardon me again. I've been sitting with this 160gb HD (Comp USA bargain) and my system's BIOS won't support it's full capacity. I think I read a work-around that I can run on my Windows ME system that can make this go away. Aside from not being able to use all the space, I cannot run scandisk. Does this sound familiar? The HD came with a Promise controller that was supposed to work. It didn't, and the card for some reason conflicted with a TinyTerm program that my wife uses (NEEDS), so out it came. I think that problem MAY have come from when I ghosted over before installing the Promise ULTRA card. But no biggie. Anyone heard of either a Microsoft or 3rd party program to support my disk drive and then let me run scandisk? Anyone really believe scandisk does anything? Mr. Curious....
