Other than the computer not booting properly, I'm not sure what's wrong.=
=20
You could try booting to a windows Me bootdisk and at the a: prompt=20
typing what's inside the following quotes "sys c:" and then the enter=20=
key. Then after removing the bootdisk, see if the computer would boot=20=
normally.=20
The rest of this is on getting restore disk to work.=20
You said the restoration disks were "no help". What happened when you=20=
tried them? Did the computer boot to the CD and give you options to=20
restore to original factory condition, or whatever they say? If it didn'=
t=20
read on.
If the logo obscures the bootup screen hit delete (at least on my=20
computer it's delete key) when you start the computer and first see the =
logo. This should bring you to BIOS Setup.=20
Then try to read whether BIOS is detecting the hard drive. I think you=20=
said you'd run scandisk. Since you'll probably need to go to BIOS anyway=
,=20
I think just checking that BIOS is reporting the right size of the drive=
=20
would be easy enough to check - so you may as well. There you should be =
able to navigate with arrow keys and tab key. Exact setup varies, just=20=
don't change anything until you learn your way around there.
Look for somewhere to change boot device order. There, set CD to boot=20=
first and then exit saving any changes. Then boot with your restoration =
CDs if you want to restore your computer to original hard drive contents=
,=20
meaning that windows should boot up. There should be a simple menu with =
just a few options where one option will be to restore computer. After=20=
restoring, go back to BIOS and return boot device order to whatever it=20=
was before.
If you restore your computer to the original state, you'll lose all file=
s=20
you may have saved. If there's anything small you need to save, you'll=20=
need to copy it to a floppy disk before you do the restoration. Or copy =
things to another hard drive if you have more than one.
Many people could've given better advice, but I think this will get your=
=20
computer restored to as when you bought it. I think your problem could b=
e=20
as simple as missing IO.SYS file on your C: drive. I'm not going to=20
delete mine just now to see what kind of error message pops up to check =
it out.
Disappointed,too, but in the good way - Todd
