I'm about to reformat. From the previous time I recall
needing the ME ID number to reinstall the OEM ME into my
Dell.

Darn if I can remember it, but there is a file somewhere
in the computer that gives the number I need.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
John

John,

If you can boot to Win Me then you can recover your personal Win Me Product
Key from the registry using a program such as Belarc Adviser or AIDA32
(http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php) or by using Regedit and noting the data for
the value ProductKey found at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

If you can't boot into Win Me but your hard disk hasn't been formatted then
you can try recovering the Product Key as follows:
a) Boot to DOS using a WinMe Startup Floppy and select 4) Minimal Boot
b) At the A:\> prompt, type the following with a return after each line. The
spaces are important.

c:
cd windows
attrib -s -h system.dat
edit system.dat

Use Search | Find to find 'ProductKey'
The key used to install Win Me should be to the immediate right of the string
ProductKey and of the form XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
