    - Windows Me freezes up while connected to internet I have Windows ME, IE and Mcafee and all is updated. For a little over one week now, almost every time I am online doing anything, after about 10-15 minutes, everything locks up. Ctr, Alt, delete will work some times but the majority of the time it does nothing. Only option is turn off computer and then scan disk for errors when turned back on. This may have started right after an update for IE or Mcafee. I am just not sure. It does seem that it happens more when I am connected to internet than just doing offline work. But it did do it when I tried to do a system restore. When came back on, had error message that it was unable to restore. When tried to restore again, no dates were shown on calendar. Now I do not know what to do. I am not very computer saavy so please explain how to fix with that in mind. I can however follow pretty good directions. Thanks for your help.     - Remnants of attack Got hit bad: viruses, trojans, malware, hijack, you name it...after my grandson "used" the machine... I had no choice but try to "fix" it!!! Disconnected from the SP and did a System Restore to the day before and ran the following first in safe mode, Why? dont know. Ad=Aware SE: had 1 running process, 1 process in reg., and several lesser "things": all removed. Ran Spyboot S&D: all ok Ran Stinger: an hour and 161,476 files later: nothing. Ran HiJackThis: <g> got a big log (well not that big) and kept it. Did a complete thorough Virus Scan. Anything else I could do to improve the speed a little bit, a little bit; it is slower than "before". also are these files now quarantined genuine WIN Me= lmgliz.txt, vqzcla.dat. Also (hate to ask because of the previous question about the Clipboard Viewer), but the Recycle Bin icon shows full and theres nothing in it, even if I try to dump something, cant find anything ressembling it in a search.     - WOOF Just after I had my interview with ORAL, I interviewed VCA. They seemed a lot like ORAL and OCA except that they organized vets. I watched the company and it had problems and went private. Then it came back again with a new stock symbol WOOF. I have seen them recommended quite a bit lately--even tho I am skeptical. At the time I interviewed them their taxes seemed in a terrible mess--made ORAL look good so I told them I was not available. They had a separate corporation for each practice. Would have been nice otherwise as they were in walking distance of my house. They were also an Andersen client. Anyway, saw this about them today. Shares of VCA Antech (WOOF:Nasdaq - commentary - research) rose 9.3% after the animal health care company posted first-quarter earnings that were better than expected. The company posted earnings of $17.2 million, or 21 cents a share, on sales of $186.9 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of 19 cents a share on sales of $183.4 million. A year ago the company earned $14.7 million, or 18 cents a share, on sales of $144.4 million. Looking ahead, VCA now expects full-year earnings of 87 cents to 89 cents a share on sales of $779 million to $788 million. Previously, the company expected earnings of 85 cents to 87 cents a share on sales of $773 million to $786 million.     - AltGr key doesn't work in an MS-DOS window I've just performed a new install of the U.S. version of the Windows Me Promotional Step-Up under MS Virtual PC 2004 SP1. I'm using a French National ("AZERTY") keyboard. I'm trying to get the French keyboard layout recognized in an MS-DOS window. I tried following the instructions in MSKB 261417 -- I launched MSCONFIG.EXE, clicked on the International tab, set the Keyboard Layout to "fr", and rebooted, but this had no effect. The keyboard under MS-DOS retained the U.S. layout. To get the French layout partially recognized under MS-DOS, I found that the Language ID had to be set to "fr", the Country Code had to be set to 33, and the Keyboard Data File Name had to read "keyboard.sys" (without the path). Per MSKB 272719, including the full path prevented the new layout from being recognized. AFAICT, the following fields had no effect: MS-DOS Code Page, Country Data File Name, Display Data File Name, Keyboard Type, and Keyboard Layout. However, no matter how I configure the International tab, the AltGr key (the right-Alt key) still does not work and I have no access to such characters as the backslash (AltGr + 8) or the at-sign (AltGr + 0) in the MS-DOS window. Of course, I can fall back to using the Alt key codes or copy and paste from Character Map, but this is quite cumbersome.     - Temporary Internet Files folder - settings 128 RAM 32.4 GB free space on HD What's the recommended allowance for the temporary internet files folder? The slider on my settings dialogue box goes from zero to 32000MB. I recently read a post suggesting that it should be set at 20MB. The reason I ask, is that since reducing the allowance from around 3815MB to 20MB, I seem to to be getting more IE errors. Does IE error when the allowance is reached? Regarding your rectangles instead of characters, if they are also affecting the Max/min/restore symbols, this is sometimes caused by a missing/corrupted Marlett font.     - Startup Window (DOS) Always Boots Recently I had to chase a virus using safe mode. Norton gave a couple of options for getting to safe mode and I chose to take the "msconfig/system configuration utility/advanced/check enable Startup Menu" route.. It worked, I got to Safe Mode and the virus was dispatched. I rebooted and unchecked the "enable Startup Menu". On reboot I still get the DOS menu with the options to "1. Normal.....3..SafeMode etc...." I then followed Norton to Microsoft help and found my msdos.sys file. It did not have an entry for "BootSafe=1" that I could change to "BootSafe=0". So I added that line, "BootSafe=0" at the top (I think). But it still goes to the black and white menu on boot up and I still have to choose "Normal" to finally boot to the WinMe screen.     - Clipboard Viewer Hi all I've been using cut&paste for so long (using Ctrl C & V) just to realized now that I need the Clipboard Viewer; its not in the System Tools anymore. Cant be found with Search. I know the program is still there, could use a link in the Help & Support. Where can I retrieve it? The reason I want it is to use the "Print Screen key" (which I never used before...in 4 years. Or is there another way to use that key for a screen shot.     - freeze ups Running a Dell 4100, 60G, 512 RAM. I the last couple of weeks have been having a lot of trouble with lock up. Most of the time alt.ctrl,delete does nothing and I have to hit reset and do the scandisk thing. Also when I go to restart it hangs up. After a while started getting a blue screen and windows would not load. After a few tries it would sometimes go into safe mode and I would try system restore with no luck. After feeling it was time to go to the shop I tried running a startup disk and ran scanreg /restore and got windows back. alt,ctrl,delete still doesn't work as well as restart.     - WinMe Suddenly Erratic am suddenly having a lot of trouble with my Dell desktop (Dimension 4100) with WinMe and am trying to figure out if there is a WinMe problem The first signs of trouble came with Netscape, my preferred browser. I noticed that if I went from the home page (which happened to be Netscape.com) to Google, I could not actually type anything in the Google search window. The cursor moved with each keystroke but I could see no letters. Then I realized that whenever I went from the Netscape home page to any other the image was incomplete. If text was to be entered I could not do it. I cannot even access this BB with Netscape--all I could see was fragments of the entire page! I made sure my antivirus (McAfee) was up-to-date and ran a scan with negative results. Ran 2 separate adware programs and got rid of a bundle of junk, but it made no difference. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Netscape, but the problem is the same. IE runs a bit better, but not by a lot. It now crashes very easily. While I had Netscape uninstalled I noticed that links in e-mail would open IE but I simply ended up with a totally blank page. I played around with Control Panel to check on Internet Options and that crashed a few times, too. And I get the Blue Screen of Death every few hours. Not everything is fouled up. My Microsoft Office programs (Outlook and Word) seem to work fine. I can also use IE to access my corporate network using MS Terminal Server and that seems to work pretty well. But something is badly wrong! I backed up the computer to an external hard drive a day ago, so I can restore the whole computer (or so they say at Iomega and Norton). Whether related or not, I am also having "out of memory" problems now and the maximum amount of memory is installed for this PC.     - system font? Hi everybody In certain parts of applications like OE, instalation wizards, etc, I get displayed rectangles instead of characters. I guess there's a trouble with the system fonts, but I don't what exactly is going on. I tryed to fix it deleting ttfCache (in safe mode) and with TweakUI, but nothing changes. I'm not sure, but I think this began when I installed some new fonts. The solution would be to delete the "problematic" font? Which could be that one? Thank you Al P.S.     - Word won't open files Word opens properly (so it's not that normal.dat template problem I had before, I don't think). Once Word opens, it won't open and Word files. It just started this problem today. When I click on a Word file to open it, the computer just chugs and chugs, and I have to do CNTRL ALT DEL to reboot. Then, I get back into Word, and I can save a new file, but then I can't open that newly saved file. I did Disk Defrag, Scandisk, Disk Cleanup, ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, and rebooted. Still the same thing. Word opens, but then it won't open any Word file. All other programs work properly. For example, Excel opens and then it opens an Excel file properly.     - MS-DOS Prompt moves by itself I am a software engineer with over 25 years of experience, and am very familiar with the machinations of DOS and Windows, but I have a peculiar problem that has me flummoxed! I like to keep the the "MS-DOS Prompt" icon on the lower left of my Windows ME screen. However, every time I turn on or reboot the computer, the icon moves above the aforementioned position to the left center of the screen, where there happens to be a gap between other folder and shortcut icons. If I move the MS-DOS prompt back to the lower left, and move the other icons to fill-in the gap, it will still move to wherever there's a gap on the left side! Unfortunately, I don't have another icon to fill in enough space so that the MS-DOS prompt won't move at all (besides, why should it be necessary???). It didn't always do this, so I thought that it might be the fault of a "new" program that was loaded within the past year, but, for the life of me, I can't figure out what that could be! The "Auto Arrange" is off. There are no "Properties" for the MS-DOS Prompt that I can see would have anything to do with this problem. There are no virii or spyware that my software has detected. The MS-DOS Prompt itself is not actively selected, and, in most cases, it isn't even used before it happens. It *might* move while I have other windows covering it, but I'm not 100% sure of that (I get easily distracted!). No other icons or shortcuts move or seem to be affected in any way. If anyone has any thoughts, or, preferably, a solution concerning this problem, then please let me know via this newsgroup.     - music file format Can someone tell me what the difference is between audio files with a .mp3 extension and .MP3 extension? I'm trying to burn a cd in Easy cd creator v.4.05 and it will not recognize the .mp3.....it says it only supports MP3 or WAV. All my music files are saved as .mp3.     - Email problems Hopefully, I can explain this problem so that it is easily comprehended. Sometimes, often, actually, this happens after writing and sending off an email (usually a long one but not always): After sending the email, I click on something...it may be any of the following: inbox, previous, next, sign out, etc. It really doesn't matter what I click on, in other words, a new screen pops up, instead of the current one simply being replaced. This can happen on all of my accounts, not just one specific one, so that would seem to indicate it's not particular to any specific kind of email account, and probably is either a Windows problem or an IBM problem. (My computer is an IBM.) Other info: My ISP is netzero and my DOS is Windows ME. Are you experiencing similar problems, or do you know anybody else who is? Do you know how to fix this problem?     - Lost Full Screen View Have no idea why but.........recently when I try to view a web page Full Screen I get a Microsoft error asking if I'd like to send a report or not. Doesn't matter whether I do or not because IE closes either way. I tried cliking on the "more info" & it states that there may be a problem with XP Service pack 2 & suggests I d-load & install.     - WinMgment....... Not sure if I spelled that right, but........ Last night I thought this old computer had something still running just before I shut down and it was the above when I did the CAD thing. It never disappeared, and it was a tad slow shutting down. But I have been getting *VSMON caused an error* right at shutdown the odd time......and I know that is Zone Alarm (tks to Loon). I took out the checkmark in ZA to do a daily delete of temp stuff and perhaps that was it. It doesn't happen all the time.......just sporadically. But wondered what the *WinMgt* was that was running.     - No Sound, No Volume Control, No More Ideas... Recently, without me doing anything that should have caused it, the sound on my computer stopped working. Every time I try and access an audio or video file, I recieve a message telling me that the device is aready in use. However, when I check the hardware configuration there are no conflicts indicated. Also, the volume control is not working on the taskbar, opening sndvol32.exe through Run doesn't do anything, and when I try to restore the icon through the Control Pannel, the option is greyed out. I have tried the following to solve this problem: - checked the speakers, etc. - tinkering with the System.ini settings per online databases - reinstalling the sound card driver - reinstalling Windows ME (it keeps hanging at around 66%) - using Windows Update (I figured I'd try it) This happened to me once before, about a year ago, and I fixed it, but I can't remember what I did. Which newsgroups and on which server?

To add a new news server in Outlook Express which I see you are using
Tools | News | Add and follow the wizard. Then Tools | Newsgroups (or
Ctrl-W), select the news server in the left hand column and pull down the
list of newsgroups on the server and decide on those to which you wish to
subscribe and either double click on the newsgroup name or click the
Subscribe button.
