When I start ME in normal mode, the machine hangs and in the Close Program
dialog box is "msgsrv32 (not responding)".

I have disabled all the start up items in msconfig so only Explorer is
running but I still get this error.

The error never happens in Safe Mode.

Any advice on what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

MSGSRV32 not responding:

Your PC is having problem communicating with your hardware. What changes
did you make to your system (hardware, drivers or application) just prior
to this problem developing? Try booting to Safe Mode and then either undo
those changes or use System Restore to return your system to the state it
was in before this problem started however only use system restore if you
made those changes in the last few days, a week ago at most.

Look at your hardware, especially drivers. When you see that msgsrv32 is
not responding this is normally because it is waiting for a response from
a driver that has possibly crashed. Msgsrv32 is just the messenger, the
problem nearly always lies elsewhere.

See MS KB Q138708 - "Function of the Windows 32-Bit Message Server"

Thanks, Mike.

The two things I did at the time the problem started was to download a
firewall from kerio.com and adaware from lavasoft. The latter quarantined
some 251 objects.

I've tried restoring to just before this point the restore always fail
"cannot restore. Try another date and time" (I paraphrase). I've tried
several restore dates but all with the same result.

I have re-instated the 251 objects quarantined by adaware to no avail.
Should I now try I'll uninstalling the kerio firewall and the adaware?
Anything else?

Roger,

I don't think AdAware is likely to be involved as I don't think it will
have changed any drivers however installing Kerio will have almost
certainly added a new driver so would be a good place to look.

Your system restore problem:
A failure to restore to a previously created checkpoint is often a sign
that the 290700 patch for system restore wasn't installed when the
checkpoint to which you were trying to return was created. If that is the
case the checkpoint is useless.

What is the version of the file smgr.dll in the windows\system folder?
You can check this by locating this file in Windows Explorer, selecting,
right clicking and choosing Properties and then clicking the Version tab.
If not 4.90.0.3003 then that could be the cause of the problem and you
need to download and install the 290700 patch for system restore. The
easiest way to do this is from the link in the associated KB article
(KB290700 - "Checkpoints that you create after September 8, 2001 do not
restore your computer" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=290700).

It is also possible that at one stage you did install this patch but have
subsequently reinstalled Win Me over itself using the Win Me CD. Doing
this causes the original, broken, version of smgr.dll to be reinstalled.
If this problem is a result of your having reinstalled Win Me over itself
may I recommend you to download and use the Belarc Advisor
(http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) which will help you in
identify which other patches also need to be reinstalled.

Dear Mike

Removing Kerio fixed the problem.

How else can I install a firewall on ME?

This saga started because I now have broadband. I understand that a
firewall is now necessary.

Yours

Roger

Although I am not a Kerio user I understand that it works well with Win
Me. I know that Noel Paton is one of many here using Kerio and I think
also siljaline both of whom are MVPs and should be able to help. For
myself I am a long standing user of Zone Alarm Pro so can't really comment
further.

Mike/Roger
Both Silj and myself use an earlier version of Kerio than that now available
at the website (v2.14 for me - and about the same for Silj, IIRC) - because
it's less resource-hungry than later versions and seems to have a simpler
interface.
If Roger can find a download of that earlier version, then it should be
sufficient for his needs.

FWIW, I routinely install the free Zone Alarm on many machines with great
success. The Pro version has additional protection features.
