These two controls suddenly stopped working - double click yielded
nothing. Following instructions I found in the MS knowledge base, I
renamed the netcpl.cpl and sysdm.cpl files. This caused the icons to
disappear. So far, so good. I used the system config tool to extract
these two files from the CABs on the hard disk (in SAFE mode as the
instructions again required). I then moved the files to the
\windows\system folder and rebooted in normal mode. No new icons. In a
command window I tried
control netcpl.cpl
and get nothing, same for the sysdm.cpl control. Other controls work
correctly when executed from the command line.
I checked the control.ini file and these two controls are not in the "Do
not run" section.

I've run out of ideas and have found nothing more on the net.

For what it's worth, my networking is still working, at least for now.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Ran stinger - no virues found.
Ran CWShredder - nothing found.
McAfee scan finds no infected files.

In the course of doing this I further discovered that in addition to the
original problems I listed, I get nothing if I click on Properties on
the right-click menu for My Computer.

I attempted to allow CWShredder to fetch the Java fix, but received yet
another new error - "Cannot load Internet Configuration Library
(ICFG95.dll)..."

I'm running out of ideas and my system doesn't seem to be getting any
healthier

almost there - network icon restored but still no system icon by David

David
Fri Jul 30 00:06:59 CDT 2004

I restored setupx.dll which apparently had disappeared. This seems to
have fixed several problems, including the netcpl.cpl file for the
network icon in the control panel.

sysdm.cpl still defies restoration. I boot to safe mode, extract the
file to \temp, then copy to \windows\system, then reboot in normal mode.
Still no system icon in the control panel, still looking for answers.

Thanks.
