Recent "Blue Screen" problems
Hi all:
For the last couple of weeks I've been having frequent "blue screen"
problems when attempting to use my browser (Firefox). Clicking on a
link - say, in email - or attempting to open the browser directly
sometimes results in a blue screen telling me WindowsME has encountered
a problem. I can usually just hit a key and return to the desktop or
email screen, but I can't get the browser open. The error codes
displayed have been eiher "Error: 06 : 090F : 000045EB" or "Error: 06 :
0177 : 0000305A". Sometimes Outlook Express also freezes up.
The only recent downloads have been Windows Updates and a slight
improvement to Firefox.
Anybody else encountering this issue, or have an idea about what's
causing the problem?
TIA.

Re Firefox Error
I know this is not an MS error, but there are those on here that are using
Firefox. This error started after I uninstalled XP......but have no clue
what it is. It has happened about 3 times, and just need a clue as to why.
I was playing a Pogo game and had shut it down when it
happened.....graphics??

Strange folder & can they be deleted?
I've noticed a large number of strange subfolders in my Windows directory
such as:
$hf_mig$
this folder has about a dozen or so subfolders itself starting with KB834707
thru Kb891781
What are these? I've also found the following in my Windows directory:
$NtServcePackUninstall$ (highlighted in blue)
$NtUninstallKB81217$ thru
$NtUninstallQ828026$ (also highlighted in blue)
Are these automatic updates? Can they be removed? If so, can they simply be
deleted or is there a specific procedure for removing them?
I've got quite a few of them (around 70 so far) and would like to get rid of
them if they're no longer needed and are just taking up space on my hard
drive for no good reason (they also make scrolling through my Windows
directory rather tedious!).
Thanks for the help! Tag: edo memory Tag: 262952

The first update modifies the way Windows handles HTML links and the
second one modifies the way icons and cursors behave. After I did this,
when I ran Mozilla and did a search in Google, then clicked on ANY link,
my computer did a total, black screen of death crash. Rebooting required
that I run scandisk on ALL of my hard drives and partitions, and it
always found four file fragments which it deleted. After I ran System
Restore and then verified that the updates had been totally removed,
clicking on links no longer crashed my computer.
Your mileage may vary of course, but this is what happened to me. I
would be very interested in knowing if anybody else using Mozilla or
Firefox has similar problems with these updates.

I have 3 OS installed (WINME (default), WIN2000 and WIN2003 Server).
Everytime when I press F8 to go to the boot option menu and choose WinME to

Is there any settings that have been restted because of the muktiple OS

ME XP Dual Boot Uninstall
I have a dual boot system set up as follows:
C:\ Windows ME - Fat32
D:\ Windows XP - NTFS
The system uses the Windows bootloader to dual boot the system (I think!)
I have PM8 available to use if reqd.
I want to uninstall XP and then re format D into FAT32 so I can use it with
the existing ME installation. I would rather not do a clean install of ME.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to do this. I believe if I
delete XP I will have a NTLR problem? or more to the point can it be done?

IE 6 - Problem View Web Site
I cannot access one particular website:
http://www.winkflash.com/photo/signin.aspx
It is not responding (hangs indefinitely). I have contacted the company's
customer support dept, and they have run out of idea's! I am truly
frustrated! (By the way, it works fine with Firefox and Netscape).
I have Windows Millennium 4.90.3000 and I'm using Internet Explorer
6.0.2800.1106IC.
Also, I have a high speed cable modem connection. I'm using a linksys router
for security.
Here is everything I have tried (so far):
1. Made sure that cookies are enabled.
2. Adjusted the security settings to minimal.
3. Double checked all security settings, cookie settings, and browser
settings.
4. Ran repair and reinstalled browser
5. Cleared Temporary Internet Folder cookies, cache, history
6. Checked for viruses, spy-ware and ad-ware.
7. Completed deleted the Temporary Internet Files folder, and the History
folder, and Index.dat.
8. Checked Hosts file
9. Added to Trusted Sites.
10. No firewall software installed. I disabled Norton Anti-virus. I disabled
ad-blocker (google). No help there.
I turned everything off - computer, cable modem, router - for 10 minutes.
No help there.
I have uninstalled and re-installed: SpyBot, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster.
Nothing is running in the background (to my knowledge.)

Help! Accidentally disconnected D: drive!
I am a buffoon (I am!)
In Windows Explorer I was clicking around too quickly and must have
hit "disconnect network drive" or whatever, well I assume I did,
because since then my D: drive (CD player) has disappeared! It goes
from C: to E: (CD writer).
I clicked on "map network drive" to see how to get it back. It asks me
to fill an a screen (pre-filled with D:) and asks for a "path"......?
I looked at the Windows Help facility, and it advised me to put in:-
\\computername\foldername, or something? Huh......?!
There isn't any folder that was on D: drive before...... I just used
to use it for playing CDs!
Have I cocked up big time or is there any easy solution? Thanks in
advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction!

Can't Change Window Text
Seems like when I think everything's fixed, I find something else. I wanted
to make changes in my desktop settings. Right clicked on desktop >
properties >appearance. Made some changes, didn't like them and attempted to
go back to settings I had before. Chose "windows standard" scheme and
applied. Every thing came back the way it was except the text was much
larger than before. Clicked on "window text" and nothing hapened. Opened the
"Item" pull down menu. Window text is not listed. I made a system restore
point yesterday after all my other problem were fixed. Used system restore
to go back to that point and my desk top looks right but "window text" is
still missing from the menu. Any suggestions?

KB891711 trouble seems to be graphic issue
On the one hand, I am reluctant to start a new thread, with so many already
scattered about. On the other hand, I have something concrete that I
discovered, and it seems to warrant a new thread.
As a background, I found that the "Kb891711.exe" patch caused problems on
one of my computers. Poking around the groups I found a scattered list of
possible causes. Broswers. AV programs. Software firewalls. Processors. In
every case, somebody had a counter example to the claim.
My solution to avoid the crashes was to stop the process with the Close
Programs list; the computer running Windows ME. Then use Add/Remove Programs
from the Control Panel to remove it from the system. This deletes four
registry keys, and two system files; leaving only the folder to which the
system files were written. So there is no need to take super drastic steps;
like System Restore rollback, or Format & Reinstall. Worst case is that you
would have to boot in Safe Mode, I should think.
However, I was curious. Because of the counter examples, I decided to
install the patch on a second, identical computer. Both computers are HP
Pavilion 6745Cs. Intel Celeron 700MHz processors. Intel 82810 graphics chip
set. Windows ME. Kb891711 crashes one computer ("Megumi"), but not the other
computer ("Naomi"). Differences? A few programs in startup; but none on
Megumi that are definitively problematic on every computer with crashes; I
can find a counter example for each program on Megumi, which doesn't cause
crashes on some other computer.
When I checked the driver versions, I notice that I hadn't updated the
graphics drivers on Naomi. As things stood, I had the following:
Megumi:
-------
Intel Celeron 700MHZ processor
Intel 82810 graphics chip set (driver version: 4.13.01.3196)
Windows ME
Naomi:
------
Intel Celeron 700MHZ processor
Intel 82810 graphics chip set (driver version: 4.13.01.3004)
Windows ME
Kb891711 causes all browsers to blue screen on Megumi, but causes no
problems on Naomi.
So I just rolled back the driver update on Megumi; it is now, like Naomi, on
Intel driver version 4.13.01.3004. I just reinstalled the Kb891711 "patch".
Tested launch on all browsers which crashed Megumi before. MSIE6 SP1,
Firefox 1.0.1, Mozilla 1.7.5, Netscape 7.2. No crashes.
It looks, to me, like a graphics driver issue. I don't know if the onus
should be on Intel to provide an updated graphics driver for the 82810
graphics chip set, but I suspect not. Kb891711 is a "kludge", not a "patch".
It does not patch system files, it runs resident from the RunServices key.
The vulnerability that it "fixes" is still present. In my opinion, this
"kludge" needs to be fixed with a true patch; one that won't break the OS
when current graphics drivers are installed.
Now to review the MSFT write up on the vulnerability. It may be that I don't
need to run kb891711.exe; if my default browser, Firefox 1.0.1, isn't
vulnerable, I will just restore things. On Megumi, anyway.

Why is it that after removing Msn Messenger from Add/Remove and diabling it

List Of Problems
HP (OEM) Win ME, I use AdAware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Tauscan and AVG.
These happen consistently
1. If rundll32 is in the tasklist, using endtask on it produces an error
message, clicking OK produces a new error message for another item in the
tasklist until empty and then will not restart/shutdown unless powered off.
2. If rundll32 is in the tasklist and I Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, system restarts,
gets to startup menu but if/when I select 1 or 2 it hangs with a blinking
cursor, keyboard does not respond (capslock, numlock inop). Cold boot works
after that but windows does not detect an improper shutdown.
3. Acrord32 does not unload when terminated, using endtask puts rundll32 in
the tasklist and back to problem #1.(6.0.1 installed, d/l update now).
4. Scandisk is set to append to log, it does append but only for 3-4
sessions then it overwrites the existing log (oldest of unfixed problems).
Consistent but less frequent
1. Windows starts or restarts in a state where things do not respond to
cursor hover, taskbar will not popup unless clicked, start menu items do not
expand unless clicked, no baloon help/info.
2. Installed Netscape ISP this a.m. and now many of the desktop icons
periodically relocate as if the screen resolution were reduced/lowered but
display > advanced still indicates 800x600x16bit (only happened 3-4 times so
far).
Going to get the cwshredder now.
Help with any of these is appreciated.

From a different thread I needed to boot up from a startup disk and,
naturally, couldn't find it. I went to control panel - add/remove - create
startup disk, clicked on "create disk" and nothing happened! The ok and

Fair enough, I can get a startup disk form other sources (and have) but why

Boot up problems please help!!
"Hi people, I?m new here! Hopefully you can help, here goes:-
My PC is running Windows ME on a PIII 750 with 256 ram & 30gb hard
disk with plenty space free.
Booting this machine is becoming something of a nightmare! I?m
pulling my hair out!!! Its frequently taking numerous attempts to get
a successful bootup. Keep getting blue screens saying "an excetion OE
has occurred at VxD VMM(01) then a couple of strings of numbers (which
I think maybe are locations on the HD) it also says "it may be
possible to continue press any key to continue" then after that
happens usually the same thing will repeatedly occur several times
then the PC will either stabilize or automatically reboot. When this
reboot thing occurs the same thing often follows untill eventually I
get a sucessful boot. It can take 10 attempts to get the PC up and
running! By the way these blue screens seem to occur right at the very
end of the boot up attempt, as all the icons in the sytem tray have
finally appeared.
My knowledge of computers is scarce, thats why I?ve been searching for
help and eventually found here! What I have tried so far is to run a
full scan of my PC with both AVG and Mc Afee anti virus(both fully
upto date) - to no avail - I had initially suspected some sort of boot
virus but it seems not to be the case.
Since then I?ve downloaded a program called Windows Registry Repair,
which has cost me a few £?s and that didn?t sort my problem as I?d
hoped it would. It has made the PC run a lot faster - like it used to
when it was new. That on its first scan of my registry found 511
errors! Which as I said has made a world of difference in the speed of
my PC and crashes are less frequent, but the boot up problem remains.
I?m desperately hoping you guys can help! I don?t want to have to
reformat if at all possible but soon I think if I don?t find some
answers that will be the only choice.
Oh yes also please could you tell me how to clear out some of the
unwanted icons in the system tray? Its getting rather full with 8 or 9
icons in there at start up! I usually end up closing them once the PC
has finally booted up."

programs run well without any problem. I also got the same error message
when I run the Norton Optimization Wizard of Norton Utilities, while it has
been run normally once before. Could any one help me in solving this
problem? Thanks. Tag: edo memory Tag: 262601

safe mode in WME
I was helping a friend clean up their computer, and wanted to defrag. I could
not get it to restart in safe mode. The help file on the computer (Dell) said
to hold the "ctrl", or sometimes F8 during boot up. Niether worked. Any
clues here? We had to skip the defrag. Tag: edo memory Tag: 262584

Printing in Word
I can print a document from Word if I use the standard times new Roman font
but if I start adding color or a creative font or text box, borders clip art
after hitting "print" everything freezes as it tries to spool. The computer
is rendered useless and I have to hit control/alt/delete and lose all my
work. even if I save it restart and try to print it happens all over again. I
can print from excel or any other program with no issues. I don't know if I
have the wrong printer settings or once I was told that there could be a
corrupt font - I had deleted it and all was fine but since then I had to do a
recovery and it may have returned but I have no clue which font it was. How
do I know to use the settings "RAW " or not? Tag: edo memory Tag: 262562
Bluescreen on game exit
Whenever I exit a game, I get the blue screen "An error has occured. To
Continue... . Error: 0D:0000:00010000" Pressing Enter takes me back to
Windows properly. But then the ATI systray icon goes away, and going into
Display Properties>Advanced causes crash again.
So I tried reinstalling the video driver; didn't help. Card is ATI AIW7500.
I tried to uninstall programs that were added since problem started. No
change. I found references to the 0D errors, but none seemed to apply. Any
ideas? TY Tag: edo memory Tag: 262559
Explorer does not display files for C:\
Hi
A friend of mines PC is running ME and for some reason, when looking at the
root of C: drive in Explorer, the right hand pane does not display any icons
or file details. This is ONLY happening in the root of C: drive and the
contents of any sub-folders, suchas as c:\windows or c:\program files
displays ok.
When C:\ is selected in the left-hand tree-view, the status bar at the
bottom will display "58 objects" and if I press Ctrl + A, it'll say "58
items selected", so I know there are files there.
When viewing c:\ with a command prompt, "dir" will display all files as
expected.
I've tried changing the view in Explorer from Icons, List, Details etc but
this doesn't have any effect.
Is this known behaviour of any known virus?
I've heard that desktop.ini can be used to force Explorer to not display
files in a given folder but cannot find any documentation regarding this on
MSDN.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Copy and Paste functions
I had to do some clean up of threats on my computer to install my Antivirus
software. After that, my copy and paste function does not work. It looks
like it is copying but it will not paste. Also, my email program has an
insert feature that allows me to bring pictures from other places directly
into the body of my eamil message. This does not work now either. Can
anyone help? Tag: edo memory Tag: 262533
Followup on ? of Overwriting ME...
Turned out to be video card/drivers. Replaced video card with another
make. Everything works normally now. But I would lose System restore
points after several days. Opening various programs would only show a
outline of the window. Ctrl,Alt, Del and End Task worked, then right
back into the program and it would work without a problem. Never could
get videos to play. Could not update video drivers either.
Re-installation of ME canceled! :-)
