    - Two versions of windows I have two versions of windows on my system, WinXP and I what I believe is Me, how do I get rid of the Me version without causing any problems with the XP? Tag: intel Tag: 255158

    - windows protection error Last couple of days I've been getting "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted." This is usually only on a cold boot, but occasionally on a restart. When powered off then restarted it boots to windows fine. If "Enable startup menu" is checked in msconfig/advanced and left to start on "Normal", it also boots fine. I can't find anything in the MS KB or online that deals with this exact situation. Any guidance in troubleshooting this would be most appreciated. I also occasionally get a freeze when double clicking My Computer on the desktop, yet if I right click then "open" it is fine. Can this be related?     - I.E Still trying to identify the I.E problem. Sorry for the second post, however, I don't know what else to do. Problem: I can open I.E with no problems, however, when I'm browsing a web site and click on a link, the page will start to load and then just hang there. I have tried repairing I.E through add/remove programs to no avail. I have also run every spyware and anti-virus program known to mankind, also to no avail.. I found a Microsoft bulletin identifying a similar problem and ran what I thought to be the fix, and still no resolve. One thing I noticed that's interesting, if I drag the link to the address window, the page will open, or, if I copy the address from Netscape and copy it in I.E, the page will come up. In other words, I can start with any web page and it will open, it's only when I try to click on a link from a particular web page does it freeze.     - Printing Problem! When I print from my printer all documents come out with blue lines running through the sentences. This has happened in the last 2 weeks. Have a current anti virus programme as well as ad-aware, spybot etc and all are run very often. Have also noticed blue blocks of colour appear sometimes on web pages as well.     - PING - TomV......re Firefox Hi Tom...... I downloaded the now non-beta Firefox 1.0, but am still wavering because I see on their Forum that they never fixed the Bookmark problem. I also have two older versions here that are unopened......9.2 and 9.3. How do they stack up against the new 1.0?? Naturally all you are going to see are complaints on a forum.....so thought I would ask you before I install one of the above.     - Control Panel I have a friend whos computer is running on Millennium Edition. Something has happened to his computer so that nothing in the control panel works. He gets a message that tells him either the pathway cannot be found or he does not have access. Even with the computer's administrator logged on it did this. Any ideas how to fix this.     - Bunches of Trouble Hi, can anyone help me with my latest WinMe anomalies? (yes, more than one...) Started out with ScanDisk acting up, informing me that "Your computer does not have enough available memory to complete this task. If any other programs are running, quit one or more of them, and then click OK." I've never had this problem before. There is enough memory and I'm not running anything unusual or more than normal/before (Only things that are running from StartUp are Explorer and Systray, eveything else is disabled/not enabled at start up.) Then, since I couldn't remedy the problem, I figured I take the easy road and restore the comp to an earlier date, but as it turns out, the Sys Restore not working either. I picked several earlier dates but so far all have been unsuccessful and (supposedly) there were no changes made to the comp. I tried both ScanDisk and Sys Restore in Safe Mode, but to no avail. (There are plenty or system checkpoints, so that is not a problem; it just won't restore to any of them.) Also, the IE | Internet Options | Temp Internet Files | Settings | View Files -when trying to see them a message pops up that says IE Script Error (Line 53, Char 13, Error Object Expected Code 0 URL file://C:\WINDOWS\Web\default.htt and Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?...) The only new thing that I'd installed is a program called ScreenThemes. I didn't have these problems with the comp prior (never with the ScanDisk; the Sys Restore had had some problems in the past), so anyone knows if the problems are a result of this new application or it's just a coincidence?     - 111Mb partition shows as 3.2Gb Hello, I am trying to help a friend solve an issue... PC is Compaq Deskpro, all original HW, one 6.4 Gb HD partitioned as 6.3 Gb and 111 Mb, both FAT32. Here is the quirk: Drive D, fdisk showing as the 111 Mb partition, Windows shows it as a 3.2 Gb HD. Drivespace or disk compression was not loaded, and even after installing it from Add/Remove Progs>>Win Components, and running it, it shows no compressed drives. Either way, I've never known a drive to compress from 111 Mb to 3.2 Gb!!! (2:1 is the BEST theoretical ratio I've EVER seen) Of course, since the drive does not contain 3.anything Gb of space, trying to write to it or trying to format it, or scandisk, simply results in write errors, BSsOD, and ultimately a need for a hard reboot--kill and power on again.     - Boot up problem - lengthy! Win ME 128 Meg Ram 40 Gig HD Just recently I started getting a blue screen "Cannot write to Disc C" error. Did all usual checks: Disc clean up Scandisc (thorough) Defrag Antivirus Ad-aware Spybot Easycleaner etc. Then had problem with boot up error: "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure. Disc Boot Failure, Insert System Disc and press enter" As I have a Tiny OEM setup, the only system disc I have is the Emergency Restore Disc (back to basics!). At first just pressing enter, without the disc, enabled the boot to continue. However, when I tried to use ME's system restore, it would not complete in this way. Finally did a "back to basics". At first OK but now have the same (boot) problem occurring. Have downloaded programs without problem, seem to be able to write to disc OK now. Cannot understand why it does not appear to see CD-Drive empty on boot up and go to C. Have used "D" drive to reinstall programs (CD and CD-RW, OK). Any ideas please. Thanks Tag: intel Tag: 255061

They tell me to delete the file because it cannot be fixed. Norton says that this trojan destroys this file. Norton tells me to install a new copy of this file. Where can I get a copy of this file?     - How do I Purge Temp Files? One suggestion I have read on speeding up my computer is to Purge Temp Files. It said to have all programs closed then click on My Computer then on Temp Files. Once there Hold down the Ctrl button + A to choose everything. Then press delete to clear. What I am not clear is how to get to Temp Files? I searched for c:\windows\temp.     - add/delete in Windows Setup When I try to use the add/delete in windows setup feature from the control panel I get the following error..rundll32 error in your program. To keep working click ignore and save your work in a new file. I click and get...rundll32 has caused an error in setupx.dll. rundll32 will now close. The window that use to display the programs that I could add/delete is empty. I recently ran a reg edit program to delete unused registry entries.     - me problems This I'm sure is probably an old and common problem, never the less it's still a problem for me. Several weeks or maybe month's ago, I had a computer crash. The ME os has never been the same since...not that it was that great to start with mind you. Anyway, ever since this happened, the machine has never been the same. I have run all the necessary anti-virus programs and spyware removal tools. The system still continues to hang, eat system resources so quick it will make your head spin, and now, it hangs on most internet web sites when I try to click on a link (internet explorer). Additionally, I receive all kinds of different error messages, run time errors, kernel errors and so on. I have since been using Netscape to navigate through internet web sites and well, the other (system resources) is just plain ridiculous. What to do ????? I have gone through and deleted any unwanted or suspicious programs from the add/remove programs. I have reduced the start-up programs to the minimum. Don't know what else to do.........     - Desktop Icons Rearranging After Startup Hi, I'm having some trouble with WinME. For 4 years, no issues. My desktop icons 'were' scattered (logically for me) all over my desktop. I boot up a day or so ago and they automatically all lined up alphabetically starting down the left side. Updated and ran Norton 2004, Spy Bot-Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware, no issues or problems found. I've been scouring the web looking for assistance. Most people suggest deleting the shelliconcache hidden file in the Windows directory. Did that and rebooted, they still lined up. Rearrange them the way I wanted, rebooted, and they still lined up. So I tried adding the Max Cached Icon registy value as many people suggest, set it to 2000 and went thru same process. Icons still lined up. Any other solutions I can try?     - ME Windows Folder Problem I am having a problem with accessing the windows internal files folder through My Computer or Windows Explorer. The only way I can access the windows folder is by opening the Control Panel and opening the Fonts folder, then I can click up one folder to view the contents and access the Windows files folder, yet when I clock up again to the Drive folder window, the Windows folder is not there, not accessable. Nor is it visible or accessable in the Windows Explorer or when I open the drive file folder where it has normally been. I have the folder properties programed to see hidden folders so it has not been hidden, there seems to have been a glitch in the computer.     - freezing from insufficient memory Compaq 1.4MGH, 1 gig of ram, Windows ME After a fresh start up with a system performance at 94% my computer now freezes after opening as little as MY COMPUTER. I tried to rerun ME to freshen up my system but get the warning message Insufficient conventional memory to run this program. try shuting down other programs to free up some. There is nothing else running including antivirus or firewall. I have to cold boot to restart because start/restart or start/shutdown does not work. I have been getting a black screen with inproper start up and had to resort to the boot up disk to restart which also failed sometimes. I feel it is my western harddrive failing after so many blue screens in the past two years. I ran the free avg updated virus software and it says no viruses. I have been running diskscan and defrag too regularly almost daily for a long time thinking that was a good thing. I could do a thorough scan in an hour instead of 14 hours when I first bought the computer. I am about to use the restore disks from Compaq which will wipe out many unreplaceable software programs and return to factory condition or put in a new hard drive.     - VMM32.VXD and no disk I was finally getting around to copying some files from my old tower for transfer. In the midst of it my computer(hp xg833) shut down. When it came up, it didn't load fully. It said file missing-vmm32.vxd and I couldn't get the computer started up in any mode. I went to find the start-up disk for my computer and it had apparently been broken in the move a year and a half ago. I am now trying to find either a solution that does not require the disk or a fresh copy of my start up disk. When I contacted HP they bounced me back to Microsoft. Thank you in advance for any help. This is an onboard chipset, usually - go to the motherboard manufacturer's
website and download the drivers from there.
If you don't know the manufacturer, download and run Everest from
www.lavalys.com - which will tell you all you need to know, and more.
