Hi,
I'm having problems opening up files (.dat, .sys) on my P.C. Whenever
I try to open a file, a message pops up and states that the file is not
a valid win32 application. What do I need to do to get this straightened
out.

Why do you want to open these files? Do you get a message with every
type of file you try to open or just .dat and .sys files?

.......or you could go to www.sysinternals.com and download a little app
called Filealyzer. This will allow you to look at these types of files and
even show a text interpretation of the hex. It is great for looking into a
.zip file to see what it contains without actually opening it, as well.

I was trying to edit msdos.sys when I noticed the problem. I since ran a
restore and it fixed the problem.
I think this occurred when I was trying to remove "open with" entries
from the right click. How do I remove "open with" entries when right
clicking a file . A box opens with alot of entries and asks to choose
from the program to use. There are alot of programs listed that are
either not on my computer or will I never use to open up files
(updateipr, powerDVD, and one of two windows media player, etc.). How do
I remove these from the list.

The Right-Click menu is called the Context Menu. It works with registry
entries or with Context Menu Handlers. It can be a bit difficult to
find and remove these items properly because they can reside at
different places in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry hive. Read this
series of articles to get a good handle on how it works:

Prune Your Context Menus
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9879,00.asp

ContextEdit is no longer free from PC Magazine but it can be downloaded
here free: http://esca.atomki.hu/paradise/sac/utilfile.html (look for
cnxtedit.zip) The application can be a bit confusing to use, an easier
but less powerful alternative might be: Context Menu Editor available
at: http://www.bartdart.com/

Usually when programs are properly removed the uninstall routine removes
the associated program entries from the context menus. If you use the
programs but don't want its context menus, or if you don't want to
uninstall the applications, you can check the program options to see if
it provides for removal from the context menus. Also, if you really did
remove a program and if it did have a unique file extension (example,
like .123 for Lotus) you can use Folder Options>File Types and remove
the registered file type. Be careful when removing registered file
types, if you are unsure leave them alone! For example Nero will tag
.dat files as its business and mark registry files as Nero files. Not
knowing that .dat are also registry files or Anti-Virus files and
removing the .dat file type could cause problems.

Why? None of the programs listed are or rather shouldn't be associated
with either sys or dat files and whilst you can uninstall the likes of
Cover Designer, IrfanView and Nero using Add/Remove Programs the other
programs listed are part of the operating system. The Open With list will
always contain many of the programs you have installed on your PC, that
they are listed doesn't mean that you have to or should use any of them to
open any specific file type unless you choose to associate the program
with the file type.

I think the best thing you can do is disassociate any program currently
associated with either DAT or SYS files. The easiest way to do this is
using Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | File Types and delete
any entry found for either DAT or SYS file type.

Mike, In that list that was sent it has two entries for windows media
player(not visible), one of which (v.6.4.7.1112) I'd like to remove from
that list. There is also moviemaker listed which I never use for opening
files.

Windows Media player 6.4 is an integral part of the Win Me operating
system and should NOT be removed either from the list or your system since
it used for certain features even if the main player is either WMP7 or
WMP9, You do not remove items from that list simply because you don't
like them.

On the contrary Mike. It's not that I dont like them, but why do they
have to be there if I will never use them to open up files. I will never
use wmp6.4 to open files. On the other hand wmp9, which I use to open up
various music files is welcome on that list. I also have moviemaker
listed and I have never and will never use to open files. Just my
personal preference. I've removed them awhile back, without uninstalling
them but I can't recall how.

I agree with Mike but it looks like you won't be happy until you screw
something up real good so look at this registry key and have fun:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

From: HACK #28 A Power User's Hidden Weapon: Improve the Context Menu
http://www.oreilly.com/pub/h/3017?page=last&x-maxdepth=0

"Clean Up the Open With Option

When you right-click a file, one of the menu options is Open With, which
provides a list of programs for you to open the file with. This list
changes according to the type of file you're clicking. Depending on the
file type, the list can get long because programs frequently add
themselves to this list when you install them. Making things worse,
there are times when the listed programs aren't applicable. For example,
do you really want to open a .bmp bitmap graphics file with Microsoft
Word? I think not.

You can clean up the Open With list by using a Registry hack. Run the
Registry Editor and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.
Look for the file extension whose Open With list you want to edit and
find its OpenWithList
subkey?HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bmp\OpenWithList,
for example. The subkey will have an alphabetical list of String values.
Open each value and examine the value data. It will be the name of one
of the programs on the Open With list (Winword.exe, for example). Delete
any entry you don't want to appear. Don't delete the value data; delete
the String value listing. In other words, if the value data for the
aString value is Winword.exe, delete the entire string rather than just
the value data. Exit the Registry."

Still, as Mike said, you should probably just not bother with it and
leave well enough alone.

It all depends on whether you want to run Win Me or some other operating
system. If you don't like Win Me then use another system such as DOS,
Linux or perhaps Mac OS X. The problem as I see it is that you don't
really know enough about what you are asking meaning that there is good
chance that you are going to end up crippling your system. If you knew
more about this "problem" you wouldn't be posting but rather be making the
necessary changes yourself knowing the possible consequences of those
changes. As it is you are quite likely going to cause problems for
yourself. Please help yourself and ensure that system restore is working
on your PC and that you make a checkpoint before you start messing with
the registry.

If one doesn't ask, one doesn't learn. I may not know as much as you
when it comes to computers, but I will ask questions. If I'm asking a
"how to" question, it's most likely means that I am not sure, or don't
know how to, or if it is possible to do a certain task. And yes, I've
made my share of mistakes, and yes system restore saved me on many
occasions.
I've looked on various web sites but couldn't find info on this topic.
That's why I'm here, asking for help and opinions.

Found it.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/platform/shell/programmersguide/shell_basics/shell_basics_extending/fileassociations/fileassoc.asp

Excluding an Application from the Open With Dialog Box
The applications that are listed in the Open With dialog box are
registered as subkeys of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications . However, many
applications should not be used to open files that are not members of
their associated file class. To exclude an application from the Open
With dialog box, add a NoOpenWith REG_SZ value name to the application's
subkey. For example, the following sample registry entry excludes
MyProgram.exe from the Open With dialog box.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

MyProgram.exe

This is exactly what I wanted to do.: )
I just concentrated on the "Excluding an Application from the Open With
Dialog Box" section. I exported the registry before I started and added
the "NoOpenWith" to the windows media player(6.4), cover designer and
movie maker. The open with (dialog box) is now slimmed down to the way I
want it. No ill affects and now I can sleep. ; )
It's a beautiful thing!
