heather, alias, mike, sidj,,, adaware problem

hello all,, specially heather the 'hill roaming tourist'.

hi guys,
if you recall, i mentioned a couple of weeks ago that i was having
problems getting adaware updated, it would get to 5% then simply
say Error.

since then i have re-installed it many times, but i still get the same
flipping error,,,,,,,,, its like a boomerang, just keeps coming back.
as it stands now, it seems i am 794days out of whack with updates,,
which is to naturally be expected after new install.

am i missing something, or is it now impossible to use adaware unless one
updates to the 'troublesome' 2007 version???
i refuse to put this one on due to the many problems i've heard about it,
and the fact that the adaware personell seem to be distancing themselves
from it? i dont know at all.

any help out there heather??

Have you tried Spybot Search and Destroy (Free)?

Not a solution but a good alternative.

Another one is SuperAntiSpyware (Free version for home users):

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Lavasoft is letting people down (see the lifelong free updates issues), so
you may be better served looking at these alternatives.

much to talk about....... ha ha.)
yes, i already have spybot, and spyblaster, but i guess i have a soft spot
for adaware, but the wheels certainly look like they is falling off.
i read just now that staff have been fired and others are leaving in droves,
sounds like the death knell. (at least for se users.)
i read what alias said, and i do hold his/her comment in esteem, but i have
also read in lots of other places that contradict.
anyhow, i am now basically without adaware as i've unistalled my original
and installed and '.exe' i kept, and like i said, it tells me i'm nearly
800days
out of the loop............ but still adaware wont let me update.
(even the forums are boo-hoo-ing adaware,, they are getting a bad
reputation really quick,, but not so much for the update problems,
but for the fact that not one adaware representitive has stepped up and
explained whats going on.)

I wonder why you are having so much trouble with AdAware SE? Prompted by
your post I've just run AdAware, checked for updates and it told me new
signatures were available dated 23 July and as when I last posted they
came down and installed without problem.

What version of AdAware Personal SE are you using? Mine is Build 1.06r1.

Just another +1 for someone using the 2007 version......I have not had any
problem with it, however, I am running XP.
Have you checked any firewall you may have that could be blocking the update
process?? Usually, the 5% hang is due to problems at their end. Wish I
could help more, but, the firewall thing is all I could think of.

Sorry you're having problems Jeanette but it's working OK here as well on
my husbands XP machine and my daughters WinME one. I updated them on
Monday morning before doing the weekly maintenance, I use the new version
on my machine.

One other thing I just noticed..........not sure how you have been
attempting to update (probably through the app itself), but, check out this
page of the Lavasoft site:
http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/
In the upper right corner is a green button, one side is to update 2007 and
the other side is for the SE version. Just thought it might be worth a try.

Brief flying visit.

Perhaps someone could tell Jeanette that I had exactly the same issue - her
in Oz, me in the UK - but it eventually started working again. It is *not* a
problem with her installation!

The latest on my experience is that I got the 5% problem return - *but only
within a virtual machine!* iow I had Ad-aware running and a VM runniong with
Ad-aware also running in that. I ran the updater in both and the one on the
Host updated okay while the one on the Guest failed at 5%. A little later,
however, it resumed working in the VM installation too. An installation
identical to the one on the Host apart from actual harware vs. emulated
hardware (but in actual fact going through the same hardware - and after all
it did work eventually anyway *without my having to change anything!*).

I only mention this because people are steering her wrong - still! (not you,
H). Mine fixed itself without me changing anything! And it existed and has
been cured in multiple installations. Seems to me almost certainly an LS
server issue or one that Tiscali.co.uk shared along with Jeanettes Aussie
isp. And bare in mind in all the years the build has been out, this has
never happened to me before. So mine and hers going simultaneously sounds
like an external influence.

You are right Shane,,
I got the bugger to work just now;; but this leads to another
question.... "did I get ALL adaware definitions or just the ones from
the update in question???"
the download took about the same amount of time for any normal
update, but in my case, i needed it to go back 800days and fetch
everyth def' available.

The AdAware status page should tell you which definitions file is loaded.
In my case it is currently SE1R182 23.07.2007

Ha! Yes, well at least we're not actually flooded here. We just have no
water - except what's in the bowsers. And while I am getting very weary of
this, the biggest problem is still that I could murder someone for driving
out here to pinch multiple gallons of what really is 'our' water. You know,
there are bowsers all over the place - and yesterday I went to town and saw
them all being refilled in this part of town, so obviously elsewhere. It's a
continual process. Out here there are people without cars, and people who
can hardly walk. But car drivers today think everyone has one (and if they
don't, they're weirdos who get what they deserve) so they can drive out into
the sticks for water. Well, we can't drive into town when they've taken
ours.

And what with people vandalising bowsers, stealing flood barriers, and
profiteers in general (solid Republicans all), it could so easily become
jungle law here. And looking at the true face of humankind makes me weary.

Along with having to do the washing up then put the dirty water in the
cistern after and go get more water. And wash with a Wet Wipe. Sorry to be
so negative. Yesterday I bought a 2G USB Drive to use as ReadyBoost, but
that seems to be one component 2K8 does not have of Vista's. Lol! Well at
least pizza doesn't require much washing up.

In haste, as ever

Not all usb thumb drives will work with ReadyBoost but not having a 2K8
system to play with at present you could well be correct and that 2K8
doesn't support ReadyBoost.

As for you local petty thieves and vandals get you shotgun out and go
hunting. No-one would ever blame you if you were to miss that swimming
rabbit and hit a water thief instead. :-) This from someone who loathes
guns of any sort and would like to see a proper crack down on their use
especially amongst the ever younger kids in London.

Pizza? Haven't had one for what seems like years but I did succumb and
have a rather nice Chinese last night. No car or even a bike nowadays but
at least in London I have a fair few places that deliver to choose from.

Yes, it has the SuperFetch service ReadyBoost apparently relies on (though I
realise the one doesn't imply the other), but I haven't managed to start
that yet - just get a message that this computer isn't configured for it. I
haven't yet found out in what way? Ironically I do have an actual Vista
trial, but it's the .vhd version (the only type out at the mo), so it won't
see a USB drive! I imagine, while 2K8 has Aero and Flip 3D and so on, it is
never going to be considered to need ReadyBoost under any circumstances - I
mean, I don't suppose they're aiming at selling it to businesses that can't
afford more than 512MB of RAM! I doubt if such a business has more than one
computer anyway and probably isn't in the market for a Server.

Well, I've been trying to find an excuse to buy the USB Drive for a month
now. So cheers Microsoft! <vbg>

Yes. And you're not far from one of the worst parts in that respect, are
you? I don't suppose any part of London is immune to that threat. If you
think about it, every direction you look points to somewhere a bit dodgy.
Where I was is possibly the least troubled by kiddie gangs - but probably
because it's full of the grown-up version.

Yes, back NW7 way there certainly was a lot of choice! Although I do think
it is also a cause of much that is wrong these days - by driving prices down
to where quality and/or service is unsustainable - competition does seem to
have had the effect of making every restaurant/take away have to deliver!
The biggest problem, I thought, was that even the really good places didn't
stay in business very long. There was this great one in Edgware where, much
I suspect to their consternation my dad and I used to drive there and sit at
a table while they cooked our take-away and be almost too full of prawn
crackers to eat the meal when eventually it arrived! We began to let them
deliver it after they suggested it so pointedly that I got the idea they
thought we were driving trade away! It wasn't a problem - the food was still
great - but then they turned into someone else, and the new lot didn't do it
so well. But almost every street around there had another Chinese, and even
the grubbier looking ones did food to die for. Hopefully not of botulism.

And much greater choice these days, don't you think Mike? I mean with
ingredients - like garlic, spring onions, squid, that sort of thing. Though
probably what you could get in SF in the 1920's, it just took longer to
convince the British to stop wanting egg and chips or pie and mash, and veg
but only if boiled to vapour.

I really, really fancy Chinese now that you've mentioned it! There was a
marvellous take away in Cirencester; but here there was one that *was*
great, but started using - apparently - chopped and shaped prawns. So we
took our custom to the other local Chinese take away, and that was fine too,
then went downhill, seemingly having changed management. No doubt new
management thinking there's more profit to be had, started buying cheapo
oil, or using it for twice as long. And they use GM stuff - though when most
use too much MSG anyway, it probably doesn't matter taste-wise.

What they had in Cirencester, and now have here too are "Thai Emerald"
restaurants, bloody wonderful! Oh the monkfish in chilli sauce! Mmmm! I
think the one in Ciren was better, but the one here is still fab, especially
washed down with Tiger beer. They seem to be based in this part of the
country, having one at Stratford and either Worcester or Warwick. One at
Pershore, iirc - where I originally did my back in on Easter Sunday 1980,
when it was so hot that I got sunburnt for the first time (I tan and it
takes a lot to make me burn! People cite the weather this Easter as evidence
of meteorological shift, but it was a scorcher 27 years ago!).

I think they might have a Thai Emerald at Evesham too...

As a teenager, I used to work across the Midlands, and stayed at Evesham
many times. It is really hard to imagine it flooded - though not when you
think of how wide the river is straight through the middle of town. Looks
very much like Tewkesbury in fact. And still does, I suppose.

Today was Laundry Day! No washboard though, so the music was a wash-out
(what a dreadful gag, eh?).

Hmm. Firstly, is this AdAware 2007 or SE?

Secondly, the problem may not be in the code base that un/reintalling
will renew, but in associated "Application Data" type locations that
hold updates and indexes to these. It may be worthwhile trying to
reversibly clear these, and then retry the update. That may also
explain why YMMV between VM and native app installs, if these are
using different AppData sets.

Thirdly, if the OS is Vista, you may need to...
- install AdAware from admin rights
- first-run AdAware from admin rights
- run AdAware from admin rights
...else it's possible that folder redirection will mess things up.

I had no need for any ofd the above drama with AdAware SE on Vista32,
but I haven't yet tested AdAware 2007.
