    - Is this Ok? (Legal) I just have a general question, and I don't mean to sound stupid here but I don't want to get in trouble either so if your not sure ask RIGHT? :) I have a Compaq computer almost 3 years old, that I am going to put in my duaghters room. It has windows ME. I have had nothing but problems with me since day one (sorry microsoft but its true) The stupid thing crashes constantly, freezes up every little while and this has been since day 1 out of the box, Compaq says its a software problem and we didn't purchases software support! Now, it won't even let you on line, (virus scans come back clean consistently) Anyway, I purchased a laptop, with it came xp. My question is, is it ok to install xp on this other computer, the laptop is gateway so the program did not come with the compaq. Is this considered piracy? The reason I am unsure is because, well, its mine right? I mean by purchasing the laptop I also purchased the operating system, right? Please don't flame me, I just am unsure of if what I woulld like to do is ok. I just want to get rid of ME all together, I have honestly had nothing but problems with it. I have kept the updates current etc... nothing has helped and again, the virus scans consistently come back clean NORTON and Trend Micro both ran 2xs a week. Nothing wrong there. Thank you.     - bootlog.txt has no errors, but Windows doesn't start When I boot the computer I get "windows protection error" after the windows splash screen. The bootlog.txt shows everything loading successfully and the final line is "Initializing kernel". I have been through article 273738 and followed the procedure up to checking for Protect Mode Drivers, at which point I asked myself 'what will I do if this is the case? I have spent 30+ hours debugging this trying to isolate the problem. I will most likely have to re-format/re-install anyway (YUCK!), so why not start now?'. This had been a very happy system until I tried to remedy the Norton Live Update fiasco. I took the system off the 'Net (unplugged cable). I have removed all Norton stuff and ZoneAlarm (as there seemed to be some possible conflict here). I ran a hard disk scan (from safe mode - there were a lot of cross referenced files with those in _RESTORE) and virus checking (from diskette - nothing found). As I hate to 'fix' a problem before knowing what is causing it, I am wondering if anyone has knowledge of what may be causing the symptoms that I see, i.e., no error in bootlog.txt but BSOD.     - Windows boots to desktop and then only hourglass Windows ME boots to desktop and then hourglass mouse cursor for 3min, after that the mouse click doesn't open or engage anything on the desktop.     - hlpcfb.dll error message in explorer I was surfing the internet when a pop-up ad came up, but the browser was blank. I right clicked to close and it had a message that said something like the browser is busy, do you still want to close? and i did click yes. the computer froze at that point. I rebooted, and then got the error message from explorer: explorer has found an error in hlpcfb.dll. explorer will now close. It would not allow me to boot up and run any programs. I tried booting in safe mode which worked, but then I tried using system restore and it said an error was found when trying to run the system restore exe file. I booted into dos and deleted the hlpcfb.dll file and rebooted. that at least got me to boot up so I could work in normal mode. I ran my spybot software, and am running my virus checker now. right click a vacant area of the Taskbar, select Properties from the popup
menu, then click on the Advanced tab. At the bottom portion of the window
you will see a scrolling window for the Start........put a checkmark in the
box next to "Display Run".
