Hi all.

Have seen many times on this newsgroup, the problem
of being unable to view .jpegs as thumbnails!

I have the same problem, except that it is .ICO files (icons)
that I am unable to view as thumbnails.
The thumbnail is just a picture of the program that is used to
open .ICO files, (in my case ACDSee 6.2).
I have upwards of 300 icons in a folder, I would be grateful if
someone could help me to be able to see a thumbnail of them again!

I have tried the usual fix: REGSVR32 THUMBVW.DLL
with no success, have also tried manually editing the registry
and adding the .ICO file values that seem to be missing, still nada.

Have gone way past System Restore or Scanregw /backup to be of any use.

Anyone point me in the right direction?

To restore .ico association:
Make a file called ico.reg in Notepad from the lines below.
Doubleclick it to launch it.
Ensure the first line is REGEDIT4 and the last line is blank and that
your mail/newsreader does not add any spaces to the end of lines.

-----cut below here for ico.reg-----------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ico]
@="icofile"
"Content Type"="image/x-icon"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\icofile]
@="Icon"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\icofile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"

-----end file above here

What happens?
Have a look in the Registry at the two keys mentioned in fix.reg and
see what is there. Perhaps you have something else you shouldn't have?

Under: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ico]
there are no sub folders.

.ico folder contents:
(Default) "ACDSee6.ico"

George,

You have not correctly created or used fix.reg
The Default should now be "icofile" as in fix.reg

There are not meant to be any subfolders under the .ico key.
The other key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\icofile
It is probably correct but HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.ico is
clearly not correct.
Please try fix.reg again.

If you follow my original instructions, the fix.reg should be correct.
It is not a complex file.
Once created, all you have to do is double-click it (may be better
from a folder without spaces) or you can open Regedit and import it
with the menu option Registry-Import.
It should inform you when it has merged correctly.

Many thanks for your help and patience.
Your fix has finally worked!

I have no idea why double-clicking ico.reg did *not* work!
I had no problem when I used "Registry > Import".

Again, thanks for your help.
