    - power problem I'm running my ME pc from a power buss that sometimes gets turned on and off. It powers other gear that may be on while my pc is off. The buss gets turned off periodically, too. The thing that's puzzling me, is that even if I turn my pc off, it magically comes back on once the buss power returns. As long as there's buss power, the pc will stay off. But, when the buss power is turned off then on again, the pc thinks it needs to power up without being commanded to via the power switch on the front of the pc. What's going on here? I want to know some=20 information for this critical update for Internet Explorer=20 6.0: Microsoft VGX833989. A few days ago I visited the Windows Update site and one=20 of the critical updates was this one.     - FYI, Noel Paton Greetings Noel. Just letting you know that not all problems on a ME computer are Symantec Norton A/V related.. The problems I was having with start-ups into the C:\root directory have been located. It was a conflict with Java. I disabled the Java and no more problems.. As for the random named files in the root directory, again it was found to be a movie viewer working with Java to leave a temp file in the root directory.. Sorry to disappoint you..     - Numerous Windows errors I am unsure of what to do. Here are the symptoms. I tried to load the ie6 update but it could not finish loading. I got an error message stating that "setup could not continue due to a previous installation has pending work. You need to reboot your computer to complete that installation before completing Internet Explorer setup. Setup will now close." I read a post that seemed close to my problem that indicated that I should run wininit.exe but the file cannot be run from windows and the computer will not restart in DOS mode. I even tried to rename the file as suggested but all that did was create a message at startup that said the file wininit.exe could not be found. I then thought maybe my windows install is corrupted so I would reinstall the OS, but the intall fails about a third of the way through. I know that I could nuke my drive but that would prove to be catatrophic. You all have always been very good in helping me. Can you help me recover from this?     - startup My system will startup with the improper shutdown screen and if I let it scan, the C drive the computer eventually freezes after scanning about 80% of the files. If I cancel the scan, the Microsoft networking screen comes up. After the Microsoft networking screen, the blue desktop screen is displayed without anything on it. If i press any keys absolutely nothing happens. When I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, the close program dialogue box appears with only the two programs, Devldr16 and Ati2evxx listed.     - 1603: Error installing Windows Installer Engine My hard drive was reloaded today (Windows ME). I have version 6.0.2800.1106 with SP 1. I've checked for Windows updates and it says that I have no updates or Service Packs needed (other than some foreign language stuff). When I attempt to load software, I get this message: 1603: Error installing windows installer engine. A file which needs to be replaced may be held in use. Close all applications and try again. I close all apps and restart and get the same message. When I press ok, I then get this message: The installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service.     - No Shut down button Hello all, I have a problem that makes no sense. I can no longer shutdown my ME box from the start bar. When I click start>shutdown....the pop up box only gives me the option of Log Off or Restart. My box is virus free, and I have removed all current traces of ad/spyware.     - Hibernate Mode Freeze Hi, I just reinstaled Windows Me on my Dell Dimension 4300. Everything was fine until I downloaded IE 6.x. After the restart it went into Hibernate Mode (by itself). I could not get out of Hibernate Mode so I restarted the machine and a message pops up saying "that the Hibernate Mode failed to exit correctly do I wish to disable the Hibernate Mode?" I said yes the screen goes blank and after multipal restarts the machine goes strait into Hibernate Mode. Why is this happening? What can I do to fix this?     - Cabinet file question Hi everyone. How can I add/update files within a *.cab archive file please.? I have downloaded "The Ultimate Boot Disk" and also "F-Prot AV" which is called from a floppy disk by the UBD. However the virus definitions are out of date and F-Prot refuses to run. I have the latest F-Prot program and definitions on my hard drive and would like to copy them into the F- Prot.cab file on the floppy disk. WinZip and WinRar can both read the cab file, but neither seems to be able to write to it.     - Combat Flight Simulator Loads Very Slow! I'm not sure where else to post this, but I know MS folks cruise it regularly so any help appreciated. Combat Flight Simulator CFS1 loads VERY slowly - especially when it says "Please wait while mission loads". Now, I'm running a Celeron 600 on a CUSL2 MOBO w/ 512 Meg ram & 32 meg GeForce 2 video card. I'm running WinME with all the latest video drivers, direct x 9, windows updates etc. I've scanned & defragged, run MSConfig & shut down all but Explorer to no avail. I've disabled the intro movie & edited the .exe file with a hex editor to not require the CD to run it, so the cdrom won;t be a choke point.     - multiple errors upon bootup My sister-in-law has a Compaq Presario 4504. She has Windows ME Millinum Edition. When you turn the computer on, once it gets part way through startup, there are multiple error messages that keep appearing. As of yet, I have not been able to even access any files. The cursor just hangs in working mode.     - Error 1722 I need some help, I downloaded Norton Antivirus 2005 and when I tried to install it I got an "Error 1722, Problem with this Windows Installer Package.     - diagnostic programs? I have had my HP with ME for a couple years. It has been acting up. It will suddenly go back to the HP INVENT screen for no apparent reason. Also the screen will freeze occasionally and I have to reboot. I am thinking maybe the drivers are starting to corrupt? I recently wiped an old Pentium 3 Hewlett-Packard with its recovery disk, and it has been working great ... until... just this morning, on bootup (after it asks for password but BEFORE the desktop appears), I received the Blue Screen O' Death. It wasn't a fatal crash, as I could hit enter and be taken into Windows, but none of my startup programs (Norton Anti- Virus, ZoneAlarm, et. al.) had loaded.     - Hidden Files I have some about 40 hidden file in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder which are not visible in windows explorer even with option of show all hidden files. I was told it was slowing and hanging before it was brought to me. At first boot, I could not get past the loader 'dots'. I tried the F11 command to start the computer to the partitioned clean drive. I then selected the fdisk choice to fdisk and reinstall all files. Probably my first mistake. The fdisk utility got to about 3 percent and then warned me of stack issues. I was told to restart as the fdisk action was halted. I restarted. Now I can't even get the computer past the IBM logo. This computer has no boot disk, so getting to an A:/ prompt is not possible. windows me based machine will not start up. black screen
with message "drive not ready" "insert boot diskette". I
can get around this by using a driver reinstall disk, but
as soon as I shut the computer off and try to restart the
same message appears. anyone know how to fix this. ty

Might be a dying hard drive.
