I have purchased an external USB drive, when I connect it to the USB port.
The PC recognises it, but does not allocate a drive letter to it, so I can't
access it.

Any ideas as to how to cure it, other than updating to XP.

Have you partitioned and formatted the drive? Until you have partitioned
the drive Explorer cannot allocate a drive letter.

See KB255867 - "How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition
or Repartition a Hard Disk" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255867
