desktop icon removal

I have been trying to remove icons from my desktop. I
have tried using the add/remove prtion of the control
panel but I'm getting no where. I also would like to
remove some other programs that won't seem to go away
either. Help!

When I want to remove an icon from the desktop, I right click on the icon,
go down to delete and click on it and the icon goes but not the program.
