my computer with windows me on won't complete start
up...it gets to the first screen and then freezes...i was
wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this is
happening...do i have a virus? or is it just one of those
things? can i fix it? i haven't had too many problems in
the past, so i don't know when or where a virus could have
come from...any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Will it start in Safe Mode?

The 'Official' MS method of starting in your computer in Safe Mode is by
holding down or 'stabbing at' the Ctrl or the F8 keys, BUT you do need to do
this IMMEDIATELY you power up your PC and keep 'stabbing' at them before the
WinMe splash screen shows. You may even need to keep them pressed throughout
the boot process. You could also try the same using the Shift key.

See how you get on with that before we can explore any further.

Good to hear you got it working again. It's reassuring to know that the
'brute force and ignorance' approach can still work sometimes. But let's
hope you don't have to resort to that method too often <g>

Turn it off, disconnect the power, ground yourself and carefully push
on any installed cards to make sure that they are properly and fully
seated. Also, I've seen this happen when a ram chip is not all the way in.

Oh, it helps to open the case so that you can check the cards. 80)>
