Windows ME hangs up during startup
My Windows ME freezes in the middle of startup. I usually
get a black screen with the blinking cursor or it freezes

it boots all the way to the Help screen. I shut down

way and then do it's scan disk for improper shutdown. If I

HP Pavilion / Windows ME Memory Issue
I have and HP Pavilion 8705 (a or i - can't tell?) w/Win
ME. I have had difficulty loading anything extra on this
PC due to low resources. I started with 128M of ram
(factory), and then subsequently added another 128M, then
ultimately another 512M - totalling 768M of RAM. I would
expect that this would be sufficient to have several apps
running at the same time. Heck, when I run just Quicken
2003 and AOL 9.0, I'm down to 35% in system resources.
I've attempted to cut down on the # of things running in
the background (using msconfig), yet I shouldn't have to
do this, or should I? Is ME (using automatic memory
settings, instead of me setting the virtual mem settings)
that much of a memory hog? Do you know if I have not
properly xn'd my memory? A jumper? It does acknowledge
the entire memory at start up, and in the system screen.
I just don't know what else to do, other than use this as
a boat anchor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tag: computer won't start up Tag: 227267

Upgrading from Windows 98SE
Should I upgrade my operating system to Windows Me? I've been using Win98SE
(2nd edition) for about 4 years now and it has served me well on what would be
considered a Pentium II class computer (AMD K6-2 500mhz CPU).
I have another system which I acquired as a hand me down. The OS in it is
Windows Me. This system is a Pentium III class computer (600mhz CPU).
So far, both systems are stable. My only complaint is having to adjust to the
different graphical interface whenever I use one or the other.
How is one OS better than the other?
Am I correct to assume that Windows Me will operate as well as if not better
than Win98 on the older Pentium II class system?
I use the older system to do basic computing (word processing, financial record
keeping, digital photo editing, etc.) and the other system for web browsing.
I am not yet ready to upgrade to a faster computer until the end of this year.

Warning Message From Dan Gookin
This was brought to my attention this morning, but by this evening
it's become apparent that this latest virus threat is making too much
progress to be ignored.
The virus is known as w32.Beagle. It arrives on your computer as an
EXE file attachment. As you well know from reading my books and the
newsletter, EXE files are NOT to be opened. Yet many folks (who don't
read my stuff) do so, and the infection spreads.
* If the subject line of the message is "Hi!" and there is an EXE
file attachment, DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT. Delete the message
instantly.
* If you're using anti-virus software, it should catch this sucker;
most anti-virus programs are geared to warn you about EXE file
attachments anyway. Even so, do consider updating your anti-virus
software with the latest virus definitions to be safe.
* A firewall will NOT stop this virus from infecting your computer.
* Macintosh and Linux computers are not affected.
* Vital links confirming that this is not a hoax and that I'm not
wasting your time:

Is there a way to stop memory leakage in Windows ME?
I pirchased windows ME after purchasing my new computer
with the Windows XP operating system which kept freezing
up programs and I continually received fatal error
messages.
So I insytalled Windows ME and everything was working
fine, for a while, but now I keep getting "close proogram
dialog boxes and low system resources dialog boxes.
I have 256 MB of RAM and only a very few programs loaded,
I have almost no saved files which would require a lot of
memory usage.
I ran a program that detects memory leaks. Low and behold
the program kept coming back that Windows ME has allowed
large amounts of memory leakage.
How can I stop this leakage once and for all. I can not
afford to go out and purchase a new operating system at
this time.
