    - Unable to "Send" e-mail My friend has a Windows 98 2nd edition and he's having problems sending e-mail with Outlook Express. (He has a RoadRunner hook-up) When he tries to send an e-mail a message comes up. The message reads, "Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page". It comes up after you try to send an e-mail. It will let you minimize the box but not delete it. It also won't let you shut down the computer by going in through the start menu.     - possible virus I have a Dell desktop computer, I run Windows ME, MS Office, WORD, and Winstar cable for internet access. Recently, every day, when I log into Word, whenever I strike a key, I get an error message (unknown error) and the application shuts down. After I restart the computer, sometimes, I will get 1/2 a letter written and then it shuts down. Also, when I have connected to the internet, "explorer" will shut the computer down as soon as I strike any key. I think it's a virus, but I have run all of my virus protection programs. The only file which has been detected is C:\_restore\temp\A0122995.cpy. My virus protection can not delete this file or quarantine it. ANY CLUES on how to get rid of this would be appreciated.     - how do I un-encode a saved doc.? How do I take the encoding off a document when saving from printmaster into windows programs. It cycles over to an email progam Outlook express and is immediately encoded into Hebrews or some other equally gothic looking language and there is no "off switch". What do I do?     - minimal start up from star up disk I am following instruction from Microsoft documnet 823382 (MSIexec.exe linked to missing MSI.DLL file). In the instructions it says to create a start up disk and restart under minimum start up. Then it asks me to rename a couple of files in the C:\windows\system subdirectory. My problem is the start up disk brings me to the A:\ drive and when I try to go to the C:\ drive it says it is in valid. So I can rename the files and continue. Any suggestions?     - Shutdown causes a Restart The BIOS is at the most current version. PowerManagement has been disabled in the BIOS and OS. All of the hardware drivers are up to date. All MS patches have been applied. I have discovered that unplugging my cable modem from the USB port allows for a normal shutdown.     - Automatic update problem I have my Sony pCG-FX120 laptop set up to automatically download Windows updates and then prompt me to install. Yesterday the system tray icon for automatic updates appeared, I double-clicked, told it to install the updates, and then after it installed them it prompted me to reboot.     - system slow down I don't know if anyone can help or can offer any suggestions as to why the following problems might be happening. 1. I have a broadband connection but have found things haven't been working anywhere near as efficiently over the past week or so. It's most noticeable when I'm using services like eBay or search engines where I have to type something into the writeable field. Firstly there seems to be a delay between what I type and what comes up and also when I try and select the text with a mouse drag it doesn't really react and if it does there's a very noticeable delay. Also the pages seem to be taking their time loading. I've run a thorough scandisk check as well having an up to date virus protection prog (Norton) which I've tried running manually as well as automatically. Neither program reports any faults though, which is leaving me none the wiser. Any suggestions what it could be or how to solve it? I did run Spybot a while ago to get rid of any annoying stuff like Gator, but I'm not sure if this would have caused the problem. I also disabled a program that suddenly appeared called diskman.exe via the run > msconfig > Startup sequence. 2. My Epson color 740 just started printing in magenta only - lovely colour but everything's mauve! I wonder if it's a related problem or not? Can't be the cartidge as I just replaced it. Could a rogue virus have crept in somehow when I disabled Norton to run a scandisk check? If so, why does it show up and why isn't Norton fixing the problem? Anyhow, any ideas/help would be much appreciated as I don't want to spend the money on an engineer if it's something fairly straightforward. It's possible that your fans aren't working properly, causing your CPU to
overheat - check them out, or take it to the repair shop to check it out.
