I've been having a problem when opening folders,items in the task bar, or just opening applications (doesn't matter which app.) from the desktop. Whenever I click to open something up, the screen would freeze and become not responsive for about 30 seconds, then it would either open or close the application after the 30 second period. While frozen the mouse cursor is able to move but the screen does not respond to the clicks for that 30 second delay or fozen period.
I checked for spyware, highjackers and viruses with a clean bill of health. I also deleted all cookies and everything in the TIF folder. I also checked crtl, alt +delete, but found nothing out of the ordinary
I am using windows ME and I dialup to the internet

C-A-D is not going to give you the "whole story." Get a good process
viewer, i.e. Process Explorer, free, from www.sysinternals.com . It will
show you EVERY running process and the amount of cpu cycles in % being used
by each. You should be able to spot what it eating your cycles.

when you <ctrl-alt-delete> do you notice a program called winmgmt?
that's "normal" but occasionally it doesn't unload when it's done and
proceeds to gobble memory/resources.

Don't know who Frank is, but, I have one more thing for you to try..........
Right click an open area of your Desktop, select Properties, Settings tab,
Performance tab, Advanced button and move the Hardware Acceleration slider
to one notch above "None."
If your problem goes away, then look to video drivers and or video card.

Suspected it would, based on what you posted. Your task now will be to go
to the video card manufacturer's website and check for updated drivers. If
this fails to remedy the problem you will need to consider a new video card.
In the event you have onboard video, check to see if you have an AGP
slot......AGP video cards are pretty reasonable in the 32Meg range (which I
found very adequate on my old box and for my purposes). If no AGP slot, see
if you have a vacant PCI slot and get the appropriate card. That should
not only help your problem, but, you may even see an increase in performance
over the onboard video.

Good morning, Herr Loon! I have done this (Intel 82810) and downloaded what
their site says is the most up-to-fate version. Whenever I go to MS
Updates, I always get a driver update dated July 2001. What's up with this?
Also, when doing my Gateway Update, I continue to be informed that there is
an updated version of Intel 82802 available. I download it like a good boy
and when it installs, every file comes up as "There is a more current
version of this file on your PC, do you want to overwrite it?" Teach me,
ancient and wise one.

I have an old Gateway, myself.......PII G6-400. The only thing I can think
of is that the MS site is not recognizing the newer driver (maybe
unsigned??). I have never messed with the Gateway updates...well, I did
once and turned this thing into a big paperweight. If it is telling you
that what you have is more current and you are not having any problems, then
run with it. Don't fix what ain't broke!
My video drivers are not the latest and greatest, but, everything
works....not a stutter anywhere, even when using FlightSim (the only and
closest thing to a game that I have).

Remember, I am no guru....but, if it was my box and everything is working
properly, I would leave it be.

I have to admit that downloading video drivers scares the bejeebers out of
me too. I have later ones downloaded, but not opened. IIRC, you have to
hit Add/Remove and take out the old nVidia ones and then let the computer
'find' the new ones.....still operating with my original ones, but
occasionally have graphic problems and have to reboot.

Baby step instructions would be welcome. And the Windows Update C-Media
drivers are Nov. of 2002. (audio) But not going to download those.

Probably Uninstall the old ones, reboot to the good old default 640x480
then run the new Install program. YMMV, of course, I haven't got an
nVidia card.
