    - error message when trying to access Help Each time I hit the Help button (I have Windows ME) I get the message: The initialization of the Help Center failed. Please report the following error to Microsoft Support: 2146869243. I have tried for over a week to contact Microsoft by phone and e-mail but no luck....they are busy dealing with the Critical Path Update problems, I guess. Anyone have suggestions on how I can contact them without waiting a couple hours in a phone call queue? I did go into Microsoft's self-help section and found a similar error message reference.     - ddhelp error message I have recently installed a new hard drive into a system with a clean WinME installation. No additional software has been installed that loads at startup, save for drivers for my old Radeon 7200 vintage 64meg agp card, onboard creative sound, and a linksys ethernet card. At random times during runtime, I receive an error message like: "ddhelp has caused an error in <unknown>" etc etc. The only repeatable crash is when I try to use Windows Update. The website opens, but at about the point when the screen should display "Searching for items to install" and displaying a percentage done, the error box pops up. Can anyone help me with this error? After running the tool a window pops up with a link to Microsoft downloads with instructions to download the appropriate patch to innoculate Windows against FixBlast.     - DEFRAGGING won't complete Hello.. I am requesting help on my mother's behalf. I have windows xp and have only learned how to use a PC on windows xp. My mom, however has windows ME and I have encouraged her to regularly defrag and clean disk....(at least once a month). Well, when she tries to explain what her defragging program does, I'm lost, as she explains her's to work differently than mine in xp. This is her situation: She opens up the defrag program. Starts to defrag. The problem is; it only goes to 3%, then stalls. I explained to her that sometimes it can take a very long time, especially if she hasn't defragged in soooo long. So, she explains that she has started defrag in the morning and let it go, then when she returns to check on it several hours later, it is still on 3% and has failed to complete the process. She said it nevers goes beyond that point. I know mine at times has taken up to an hour before, but never stalled or failed to complete defragging.     - Restart in MS-DOS mode + (Shift) Restart not present ? Hi, I`ve been trying to search these pages, but the Search always gives me time-out (even while searching just within 1 month). Other techforums didn`t help me too, so sorry if it`s obvious, but: 1. How can I restart Win ME in MS-DOS ? Yes, Boot Disk works, but it`s rather inconvenient&slow. Pressing either F5 or F8 right after reset doesn`t help either, it simply is not in the menu. Many times (like deleting fonts physically in DOS, since Win doesn`t allow their uninstall even in Safe mode), the DOS is needed. 2. How can I do a fast restart like in Win98 with Shift ? If I enable it in X-Teq Setup, it doesn`t change anything. I mean, whole PC restart is prettty fast, under 10 seconds with all icons loaded, but if I could restart just windows and not whole computer, it would be even better - although it has to be said, that WinME is far more stable than Win98 and is capable of running nonstop for 3 days while downloading, programming, browsing and playing games. Both of these problems are annoying me for quite a time, yet I can`t seem to find a working solution on a net on them - what i find is either - "it should work", or "forget about it - it`s Win ME."     - System Configuration Utility Startup Question In the System Configuration Utility Startup Tab there is a button "Cleanup" that I can not find what is does and so far I have not used it. I have a number of boxes without a check mark and some other items that are duplicated. I would guess that by pressing this button it may clean up these unused entries. Then again if I should sometime in the future need to check them again how do you add items or programs that are not listed here. So far I have only unchecked item that I am sure I do not want to startup when I start the computer.     - Error loading Explorer.exe I this morning experienced exactly the same problem as S. Kaiser noted. I on the other hand am a novice with computers, and have not been able to repair the problem. I tried two (articles 299296 and 306599) posible solutions offered at Microsoft's Knowledge Base, and they have not worked. Actually, after using "article - 306599" the error message changed a bit from "Cannot load Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." to "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." When I tried to reinstall Windows Me another error froze me on the spot: "SUWIN, An error has ocurred in your application. If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file. If you choose Close, your application will terminate." When I press "Ignore" the focus changes to the "Close" button, and when "Close" is pressed I get: "Application Error SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module VERX.DLL at 0002:24AE.", and now with only the close button. Once the close button is pressed the Win Me Installation stops and I end in DOS once again. I've also tried to use the rescue (floopy) disk, but once it kicks in I have no idea what to do a the command prompt. If what I read is correct.     - Wireless Network I am trying to sort out all the brand-name wireless networks. We have cable modem and are currently using a server computer connected to the cable modem and then to clients via the Intel Anypoint which works over the phone lines. Works well most of the time but the server, which seems to be a software router, seems to lose it's noodle about once a day and has to be rebooted. If (big if) I understand wireless I do not think it needs a server and acts as a firmware/hardware router/hub. At any rate here is our home network: Cable modem --> Server is Win 98. Connected to Desktop 1 and 2: both with Win ME. Laptop 1 is Win ME and laptop 2 is Win 98. Have any of you setup a wireless network with similar configuration and which brand did you use? Horror stories? Out-of-the-box success? Any help in picking a wireless setup will be greatly appreciated.     - engine initialization error Yesterday I bought a new SAMSUNG CD-RW 48-24-48 burner. I put it in my computer the way the directions said to. The light on the CD burner flashes and everything so I figure I have it connected correctly. Then I put in the software that came with it and it said it was successfully installed. When I go to find the software on my computer it is not listed in my programs and there is no icon on the desktop. But when I go to My Computer, then click C:, Program Files I can find it under "Roxio" then it has two different programs listed "DirectCD" and "Easy CD Creator 5". So I click on either one and then try to use the "Easy CD Creator", "CD Copy", or the "Music Creator" programs and the error messages I receive are: In the title bar it says "Creator API" the message is "Easy CD Creator Engine initialization has failed: so I click OK then I get the message "Exception CreateIntanc of Creator!" so I click OK and get the message "Creator50 has caused an error in CREATOR.DLL Creatr50will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer. What could be causing this. I cannot get my burner to work. I went through Windows Media Player and tried to copy some tracks off of my CD just to see if it would work and it said it could not find the engine and directed me to a place on the web to download it. I downloaded the engine per its directions and then rebooted my computer like it said. I then went back to Windows Media Player and tried to copy the tracks again and it said the engine was missing and took me to the same place to download the engine again. I don't understand what is wrong. The software that came with it doesn't work and neither does Windows Media Player. Any suggestions?????? Please I need HELP!!!!     - Windows ME Issue Hi: I've just recently re-installed Windows ME off my system's restore cd, and now after I reboot, if I click on Windows Explorer or My Network Places, it just sits there and does nothing. The start button works, but only to select things that do not run. No other issue or indication of the cause is displayed. All Windows Updates are applied, and I am just plain stumped.     - Internet Explorer 6 can't repair I just had a friend reinstall Windows ME on my computer which had the same version before and all the updates are current. Everything seems to work fine except for certain things with IE 6. One problem I have is that I can't enable cookies. Everytime I go to default settings and apply it then exit the window it resets back to custom settings for cookies. Also the Explorer window is greyed out. I also can't print off the internet. I can print from Word or Excel. I get a DNS error every time I try to access ANY secure
