I've been taking care of my pc health without a doctor's diploma. I'm not
even a nurse. I've been doing good so far by information I find when I
google whatever problem I am trying to solve. Sometimes I get lucky ,
sometimes takes a while , long while to find the right solution... I wish I
knew about this place. I found you guys as I wasresearching my current
problem and started to read and read and , boy oh boy, I forgot my problem .
I learned more in a couple of thread than all the research I've done in my
pc's life. Unfortunatelly, I do have a problem and desperation is leading
my life. I deleted boot files by accident and do not have a working a: drive
to boot from with my startup floppy. I am happy with ME but all this about
not getting support anymore has been bothering me. So I started reading up
on how to upgrade to XP since I am going to perform the OS change surgery
myself and did not want to make any mistake... so much for that...... mistake
happened before surgery and don't ask how I happened to have my boot up
floopy inside a: drive and while doing some file cleaning as part of my
preparing for upgrade I deleted the essentials boot files.. I was trying out
this "easycleaner" application and one of it's features deletes duplicate
files and you guessed it, boot up floppy in a: drive and, of course , the
originals in c: drive , "easycleaner" opted for the ones in c: and now I have
no boot up files on c: and my pc has not been able to recognize a: drive for
quite a while so I am DOOMED /// or am I? I am confident someone here will
bring me back. Do not understand how my pc can read a: drive, yet , here
comes "easycleaner" and had no problem picking up those files in the floppy.
Sorry to make long story, .... please help me . don't worry about making
long story... I follow word by word if you give me hope... I 've clumpsy
before but now I've really done it. I got to this newsgroup while reading
about some flash drive booting approach but Im afraid it was little to hard
to understand and....... neveer mind , just tell me what to do , Por Favor.

Ricardo, not exactly clear as to what you have and have not got, but to
summarise *my* take of your report :-

1) you can't boot your C: drive into WinMe
2) your A: drive isn't functioning.
3) your essential 'boot files' are either missing from your C: drive and/or
your floppy start-up disk.

(Not quite sure how you know for certain that the 'boot files' are missing
from your C: drive if you can't 'see it', apparently)

Can you verify the above and then we may be able to make some headway.

And, with the cost of a replacement floppy drive being so low, I would
suggest you first start by fitting a new one (or at least find out why the
old one doesn't work) - you're going to need.

Mart

Ricardo,
Have you attempted to boot into Safe Mode? It was *my* take that
your A:\ is still working, you just boogered the boot floppy. If you have
access to the Net from another machine, there are a number of places on the
Net that you can download an Me boot disk.....just do a Google search. Is
there a 'recovery' feature for deleted files in the 'easy cleaner' app?
If so, try it...if it works, never use it again.
Heirloom, old and needs
more details
p.s. in your next post, please include:
Did you attempt the XP install? If so, how far did you get?
How many HD's and/or virtual drives (partitions)

but Ricardo 'appears' to contradict himself with :-

So I won't ask - but I am confused <g>

Yeah, Mart......I picked up on the contradictions.....that is why I was
reaching for more details and questioning whether the OP could still boot
into Safe Mode. Having a boot floppy, or actually, not having one, is
easily fixable. I have to wonder, also, how he knows the files are missing
from the boot floppy, if the A:\ is not functioning.

Guess we will just have to wait for a response...........good to hear your
face again!!

This is nerve wrecking , Ed. I've been working little too much last couple

that indeed I amm a dead cat. Now that I think I can handle it I find all
this replies and said YES!!!! They Sure Know What To Do....... still shaking
I open first one, you, and ,,,, and,,,,, ,,,,,Ay, Ay, you say someone else
will get back ..... You can't help me??? I see there's Mart and Heirloom
down the line with two entries each and dont know what to think,, are they
chatting among eachother??,, are they giving me more than one solution????
are they having hard time finding solution and have to go back and forth???
are they this are they that... and ... I 've never been so tense in my
life!!! But thank you for replying, it made me feel you feel as well .. and
though Im trembling, I will open those entries and face my destiny... it has
been hard around here and mainly on my pockets and just can't afford to buy
new hard drive to start over ... If Mart or Heirloom can not help, then I
will be hanging there alright,,,,,, by my neck, probably from the hard

actually you are a milestone for me being my very first newsgroup

Hola Mart, Thank you for dropping by.. .. You know, funny you ask, 'cause
just before I opened your reply I was thinking , I'm really not sure about
the missing boot files,,, I was actually guessing because I can not boot, so
it only make sense to this, your humble diciple... and if can not see them ,
well again, I honestly believed can not see 'cause they miss and if they miss
, no boot, and round and round I go in this dizzy spell and that's how I
figure,,, sorry,,, no Black Magic for me I guess.... this happened some while
ago and I've been trying all kind of fixing , nothing works, ... my friend
lend me his laptop so that I can at least check my emails and do research for
a solution and here I am... the more I think about how was I so stupid to
delete whatever it was I deleted, my mind gets blurry and rather not remember
and keep looking for a way.... all I know is when I turn pc on I get "Invalid
system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key".... .. I take ,disk
means boot up disk,,, so I put in a: and nothing, back to message, then I put
OEM restoration cd in dvd burner,,, and nothing,,,,, switch it to dvd player,
and nothing,,.. but I tell you Mart, I press F1 and got BIOS screen and boy
I was happy to see that... at least thought I can bring my baby back,,, don't
know why 'cause I have no idea about BIOS,, well more or less I know
something from playing wannabe pc technician and have even changed things
around ,,, stupid again?? ,, any way too late .. hoping that option "restore
default" will set it back the way it was... but I think I read something
about if you change BIOS it will save as default and then was not sure if got
back to original state.. but, Im thinking the more I tell you , the more your
diagnosiss will be "defunct" "R I P" and I start thinking of the places my
mouse has clicked and belive I desconnected the a: and drives myself bby
going into what I think or figured while in my wannabe state, the BIOS
version of windows ,,, "device manager"in the system icon of control
panel..... Im probably wrong about that but the fact is that I went and
upgraded some of the drivers and,.... oh no..;. I am writing and thinking
you saying what a dumn idiot
.... the useless a: drive.... right???? that's where it happened?? that's
where I made it obsolete???. I forget what of many accidents I had then and
had to boot in safe mode, I believe it was, somehow I had to chose to reboot
with or without drives or something like that and really forgot how it went
but ever since , even though I fix my then problem I was not able to access
my a: drive and for that matter, my dvd player located at the top,, under the
dvd I have my cd rom burner and that one worked and with some little
difficulty I was able to restore , . I got used to having only that one drive
which eventually I upgraded with a dvd burner a friend gave me for Christmas
and once in a while I will miss my A: drive or my dvd player when I was
burning cds ... as I start to explore dvd burning , movie making and all them
wonderful things I start having trouble with memory and crashing after just
burning two cd's with Nero, and I was blaming Nero 'cause I had no trouble
when doing with Easy Creator 5 . so I unistalled Nero and got Easy back but
one of it features that deals with cut and paste , and drag to cd without
burning would not load and puzzled did not know what's going on... .. ..
that's another thing... because not drag feature , I can not access all this
files I have in cds I dragged when backing up and saving them for one of my
many computer fixing performance and ,,, well , I have lived with that ,
thinking one day I solve that one , but . ....... OH GOD I've never seen my
problem in writing and looks like a real BIG mess
... dont know what's gonna happen and your reply gave me both hope of
resurrection and resignation to let go and get a new hard drive to start
.... .. can not say it again , it hurts, to start .. to start all over
again..... THere... I said it.... I willing to relive my painful pc past if
that's going to help you help me.. I really appreciate you taking time to
read me , especially since I have trouble making short stories... Im going
to next reply and see what awaits me.... Hasta la bye bye Mart and thank you.

OK Ricardo, let's take one step at a time and keep it very simple.

1) Make sure that there isn't a floppy disk in your A: drive.
2) Make sure that there isn't a CD in either your CD-ROM or DVD drive.
3) Boot your machine from cold (i.e from power-off)

Exactly what error message do you see on your screen?

Hola Heirloom,, thank you for asking..... I was just visiting with Mart and
kind of explained my journey thru darkness leading to dead valley and hoped I
did not confuse him .......but yes,,, I downloaded boot disk for ME from this
website I learned about right here when I first arrived.. Bootdisk.com
created by ,,, his name escapes me, but he won one of them MVaward and I was
so happy to find it, but did not work,,, still sure it is a: drive problem as
I was telling Mart that I went into the device manager and upgraded drivers
and made some changes and ... hey,,, I forgot to tell Mart that I when I F1
to BIOS I change the order of booting to make floppy first one a the top as
sugested somewhere in my research .... hmm.> I should go back .. yes I have
to.. but Heirloom I will fill in your questions... Heirloom./..??? Heirloom?
hey, are you the guy everyone was asking about somewhere in here??? I was
learnin a lot having fun reading some of the questions and answers...and
ocassional episodes where there was some type of smarty remarks and biting at
eachother.... just like a tv soap.. and then also seems you guys been
hanging around here for some time and know eachother and there was,,, I think
it was,,, your name,,, Heirloom... and boy seems everyone thinks the world of
you... if my memory do not fail me and it is you, I am honored you have
replied to my very first entry , now I can add a celebrity to my
milestones....... wait a minute.. Im so bad with names at the beggining and
now Im thinking maybe was not you they talk about but it was you who owns
Bootdisk.com.... no, no can't be, or you would have send me there instead of
suggesting google... but either way Im glad you are here as well ,,, maybe
you and Mart will be the dynamic duo who rescue me..... sorry to drag
this.... Easy Cleaner , I used it twice and perhaps it has recovery file
feature but no good for me.... I cant get in windows.. keep getting Invalid
system disk message....Easycleaner was recomended by the microsoft article I
was reading about updating to XP... it looked like a great application and it
was free .. I ran the first time and when got to the duplicate part of it, it
took so long to scan,,,, now I was not aware of boot floppy being inside the
A:drive,,,, I thought it was stuck 'cause I waited and waited ,,, I could see
it was reading files but took too long so I canceled and kept on something
else ... everything was fine....second time I use it I was patient enough to
wait and ......tell you the true, I was surprise to see so many
duplicates..... should have thought something was wrong .... right there and
then I should've backed off.....AAYY Heirloom... this writing about it really
a punishment... stuupid me.... I don t think Easycleaner 's fault... I feel
awful .. but you're right ,, I should not use it again if Im going to be
scatterbrain......I wander if Im mature enough to upgrade to XP?? let alone
installing it.....but no, Heirloom, never did get to install it... any way
I need it to do some other stuff after easycleaner... If my ME windows is
still somewhere behind that black screen with that nightmarish ivalid system
disk message blinking awway at me, it 's probably displaying that page with
the step by step instructions for housecleaning and preparing for XP.. I did
not get far before I realized the catastrophy I've created... I've been in
trouble before and only knew to fix by replacing hard drive... can not spend
money like that anymore, at least not for now...I have 5 hard drives , each
with an unsolved problem of their own.... I must be laughing stock of whoever
is reading this..... So Heirloom, I have boot disk from the internet, an a:
drive that does not function, can not access easycleaner to retrieve files
(if it can be done) and did not get XPinstalled,,,, I have one hard drive
and that about virtual partition is like reading some old papyros with
ancient jeroglifics or however is spelled.. . all I do when installing hard
drive is that fdisk thing and follow thru all those yes and no and partition
c: and so on and eventually I have a working pc ready to encounter a tweaky
rough life.
I'll let you go.... please if you find something please look me up please
Heirloom.. '
.Hasta la bye bye..

Heirloom , great to see you... Happy to know you are still interested in my
case... before I go on I want to thank you ,, you are doing research for me.
I know how that goes and I appreciate your effort and Matt's ... I was just
writing to him explaining the contradiction....but I was in stiches laughing
so hard from his opening comment to you... that verbose remark just about
killed me..... but I think it killed the message I sent him.... MSN asked me
for my password when I clicked send and when I got back the screen showed
just portion of Mart's message and none of my reply, so Im not sure if he's
gonna get it and Im new here and do not know how to check if, and Im afraid I
was again "verbose" L O L , love it., too funny,,, so instead of writing
again, in which case it will not have the same essence of the moment,
precious moment , he made me laugh good and I needed it...... I am going to
answer yours and so of recap what I told him and maybe he can pick up
here....anyway you should be informed too and see if you can use it....
contradiction you picked up and as Matt did not mention to me , was a typo
without typing.... I have my friend's laptop and Im not used to it ,
especially that tiny uncontrollable mouse,,, I had to connect my own mouse...
anyway it should had read "I don't understand how my pc can't read a: drive"
. I missed the 't... sorry about that but like I told Mart, I want to be
clear about the details that brought me to this point of no booting... I
really want your help and want to make sure you understand the problem.
/...(by the way, I just had another slip and thought I was going to loose
you).... Imgonna have to be careful here with this laptop....Gee I wish Mart
gets that message... I dont remember ever writing with such heart felt
emotion as I laugh all the way to the end... you guys are really nice to do
this... OK non-vverbose..... I mentioned to him about going and making the
floppy first in booting sequence in the BIOS. Right then I realized I forgot
to answer your question about safe mode.. I was trying to get to safe mode
and could not.... I did the F8 key, I try the Ctrl key, and I try another
one as sugested somewhere I read. Heirloom, my luck, none of those keys
work... Im suppose to get the screen where I choose safe mode.... and I can't
get pass that Invalid system disk message.... no way around it, under, over
just no way.. no with a: not with either cd rom , nothing..
Mart seemed curious about the floppy inside the a: drive, especially since I
said don't ask and he did not ask but he told you that he didn't ask and to
me that means he wanted to ask so I let him have it.....L O L , in a most
verbose way LOL ay ay ay....I sure hope he gets that message........to make
it simple, I was going to copy some files to floppy and used the start up
disk I had near by.... first I was going to format it but a:drive is
defective so no copy files, no format , and stupid me no take out of a:..
after couple of day I forget it's still there and I go on with famous
easycleaner exterminator and no need to repeat the rest.... What else...
let's see, I wrote to you earlier in the evening and except for the safe mode
issue I covered every question you had.... but I did write to Mart in that
presumed lost message that as Im writing I've notice I have called "boot
disk" the floppy inside a: drive but it was really the start up disk I've
made some time ago with the ME make start up disk feature and was not sure if
start up disk and boot disk are the same thing... or start up disk, which is
made with a floppy is the one I just said you make yourself and boot up disk
the one original one that comes with the pc....either way it was the start up
floppy all along.....
You think I was clear? can you understand my problem.... or what Im
saying... I am from PuertoRico and even though I've lived in San Francisco
half my life, I cant get rid of my accent, at least have not work on it, and
Im afraid it comes loud and clear in my writing.... ah yes and on top of that
I talk fast, which drives my fingers crazy when typing and Im not a good or
fast typist....so tell me what else you need..... but don't know why I feel
you guys having hard time with solution to my little problem... but then
again..what am I talking about... I have not read your or Matt's reply
yet..... cant wait....Thank you for hearing me out........Hasta la bye bye
Heirloom

Hola Mart.. I just spent couple hours responding to you and Heirloom's
messages.. I hope I;m doing this right... I came back to see if anything goes
and noticed this message did not have my reply.. I m sure I answered it...
but looks like I missed last paragraph you suggest buy new a: drive.. I
thought about replacing but ok.. I get new one make the switch,,, now what?
Screen still going to show Invalid system disk so how do I know it
installed?.. dont I have to go thr the plug and play thing?? I do need
windows for that, don't I?? Any way you've made point clear it is nessa, to
have one, no other way....I will try that and see if I get lucky... can I use
an a: drive from another old computer I have? Im going to keep checking all
this entries and see if I find my reply to this.. I know I answered.. you
know.. in a "verbose" manner.. I laugh so good when I saw that ... gracias

Hey Mart... there you are.... so this is how this works.... I just answered
your first message again because I thought my reply got lost but now I see
... I was wandering why the nicknames were zigzaging that way.. but yes I
see..... howevere I've made a point not to be verbose... you are an angel...
thank you.... ok here it is..
No floppy in a:
No disc in either cd rom
Booted from cold...........///Boot? Is that what boot means?? To turn
machine on?
I thought it was when machine, once turned on goes into all those sentences
and numbers that go real fast and then into windows.... but maybe I
misunderstand you..
But doing what you asked.... I m getting just like I said before

"Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key"

and inmediately right under the message the blinking cursor

that was fast reply of yours

Mart I just wrote and got an error message saying problem and message not
deliver , so I try again

No floppy on A: checked
No disk on either cd rom checked
Boot from cold done

message:

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key

and right under the message the blinking cursor

Before I came for help I inserted floppy I downloaded from Bootdisk.com and
hit the enter key and nothing happened... then I restarted the pc and message
showed up again.

Ricardo, very interesting though your life story may be to some, long
rambling replies are not going to help solve your problem.

You didn't directly answer my previous question -

> Exactly what error message do you see on your screen?

However, if I understand your 'verbose messages' elsewhere in this thread,
it would appear that your hard drive is badly affected and therefore you
MUST HAVE a working A: drive AND a 'good' WinMe Startup (floppy) disk before
we can proceed.

If you haven't got a 'good' WinMe Startup (floppy) disk, you can download a
WinMe bootdisk making utility (Windows Me OEM) from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm - (**But be sure to read the
instructions on how to actually create the bootdisk**.)

Don't just copy the download to a floppy disk, you need to run the
downloaded file on your computer (any computer, with an A:drive) for it to
actually create the Startup (floppy) disk.

Good luck

Mart

Hi Ricardo,
Thank you for your response and we welcome you to the Win ME newsgroup. As
Mart and Heirloom had asked you, please respond to them in a concise and
clear manner, i.e., keep your issues straight to the point. In other words,
"one issue at-a-time." Keep in mind that when you have different issues,
these should be addressed one-at-time. Yes, by that I mean, separate
threads. People in this newsgroup are always willing to help anybody, as
long as the issue(s) are succinct. Should you need assistance in another
issue(s), pleasse do so on a separate post/thread.
Best regards.
Ed
