Sounds very much as if your hard disk has failed or is failing especially
since you hear clicking as well. Have you tried booting to DOS using a
Win Me boot floppy and running CHKDSK and SCANDISK?

not..

Either you can open the chassis and read the infor off the hardware or it may be listed in
the BIOS settings of the platform.

If you are unable to ascertain the above then I suggesst taking it into a reputable service
centre.

you can get the data using Belarc Advisor - www.belarc.com - assuming you

Looks like you'll have to open the case and read the label on the HD :(

WRT the 'disappearing HD space', it could be a number of things - are you
using GoBack? any Norton software??
Perhaps you have something fighting with System Restore for control of a
file - is your anti-virus up-to-date and functional?

First priority is to check out that HD - and BACK UP YOUR DATA!

Yeah - but some 'generics' are generic because later versions of things
don't know (or have forgotten) about IBM HD's and suchlike - so going back
to the earlier version that Jim hosts may be a better idea in this case

Belarc is pretty good, usually, and picks up most of the HD's.... be
interesting to see what it really is in the end! :)

Yeah, I know that's why I stated "AIDA32 may work", emphasis on "may".

It could have miuch to do with the BIOS. For example SMART and hard drive translation. It
will depend on how well the IDE/system BIOS can conmmunicate with the hard disk BIOS to get
the information from the hard disk. If the BIOS can't communicate with the hard disk
effectively, I doubt that any Win32 application will fare well.

Actually the Belarc Advisor gives full details of my hard drive, even though

Does it actually list the make and model, Harry? - that's what we're looking
for! In cases where the drive is listed as 'Generic' in Belarc, IME, it
nowhere gives the manufacturer's name or a viable product code number
