If you boot the WinME mchine to Safe Mode, you can confirm that the
KB891711.exe "patch" is not executing, by viewing the Task Manager or
Process Explorer. Then run the Add-Remove Programs wizard to uninstall the
update. Since the executable is not running, all registry entries and the
two update files should be removed, perhaps leaving only the empty KB891711
folder, which you can manually delete, if desired.
I strongly urge you to reenable System Restore, as Mike suggested, to
protect better your friend's machine in the future:
"Navigate to "System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting" and
uncheck
"Disable System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should
now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Finally, adjust the space allocated to the restore folder, at
"System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk" and adjust the Restore
slider
to your preferred setting.
