I'm trying to clean up my nearly full hard drive. I am
running Windows ME. There is a folder called "_ARCHIVE"
that is filled with over 400 zipped "CAB" files dating
back to early 2002 and ranging from one to several days
between each subsequent file. This is taking up over 4
GIGS on my 20 GIG drive. Yet when I try to delete even the
oldest files the system won't let me - says the source
file may be in use. All the file names start with RG.
Why do I need all these files and can I get rid of some of
them and free up disc space?

Any help will be much appreciated.

You need to read up on system restore and how to reign it in. You can
start here:

Windows Me System Restore
http://www.windows-help.net/windowsMe/system-restore-pf.htm

It pretty well explains it all there in an easy to understand manner.
You should set a limit on the size of the folder, 200MB should be
sufficient, instructions are shown on the page.

You will have to purge the folder. There are different method of doing
that, see here for information:

Antivirus Tools Cannot Clean Infected Files in the _Restore Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263455

Don't worry, you don't have a virus but the article explains how to
purge the folder. This page also shows it in an easy to understand way:

How to disable or enable Windows Me System Restore
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

If you find that you have a hard time purging the folder with the
methods described in the articles you may have to do it in a DOS
session. If that is the case just post back and someone (probably Noel)
will help you with that.

Hi! it is the restoration files, but it shouldn't be 25% if your HD
(normally maximum 10%)
So go to system properties
Performances/system of files/
repaire (or something like that, don't know the exact word in English,
but it is the last thumbnail)
Check : desactivate Restoration system)
apply-ok-restart immediately your computer

Go back the same place uncheck it and restart
(all explanations in English
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;264887)

Go back same place but one step before (system of file and you will
see a cursor to be moved "disk space used for RS" move it to around
300 megas, which should be enough
Also apply that patch otherwise you restoration system is of no use
