I have a relative I am trying to help with their computer. She recently went from AOL dial-up to Yahoo DSL, her modem was not working with the password and user id, so they replaced the modem. Then she had an error message saying her winsock is missing. She tried to go to winsock fix and that did not help. She said now she cannot get her browser to work at all and was having issues trying to shut down the computer. She is currently running Windows ME, I have not had the chance to personally see what is going on. Can you give me any advice on where to start. Thank you,

Jen Baker

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove what is almost certainly
a variant of the CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

also run the LSPFix from here
