1. How many of these updates are really necessary?

2. Why are there several with the same reference number?

3. Aren't some updates an accumulation of previous ones? If so, how do we
identify the individuals already in an accumulation?

Critical updates are ... the rest are up to you. Read the KB article
related to them, if there is one. Another place is :
http://microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/current.asp

Different versions of IE, is one reason. Different OS' , is another.

Read the answer to 1. For Critical updates, read the associated KB
articles, start with the "HotFix & Security Bulletin Service " page ...
there usually be a link to the KB article contained in the bulletin ...
for MS 03-027, there's a link to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=821557

To find the link to other updates just drop the 821557 and put in the
update's number ... the June Cumulative Patch for IE is 818529. Try it
for yourself and read what it contains.
Remember... it's YOUR computer ... only use the updates relevant to your
situation and liking, unless they relate to security.

That's my 2 cents,
