1) I have been using Me since 2001 - and I am using the
system for surfing, email, Word docs, music, some graphics
and Docs. All MS apps - maybe So far so good. (not a
power user) Is it worth to upgrade to XP?

2) if I decide to upgrade to XP - what is the most
painless procedure to follow ?

thanks

Mark

1. Who can say, except you? I like Windows XP, but it may not offer enough
compelling reasons for you to upgrade.

2. Pop in the CD, let it check your system, and if it finds any problems
STOP THERE and fix them before upgrading. Otherwise, let the upgrade
proceed.

Dear Mark:
1. Like your situation, I have WinME & have used it
w/ a P4/Intel M-board since Febr.'02 & until recently, it
was adequate. However, I needed to do 3-D and engineering
drawings and that changed ME's usefulness. I investigated
XP Pro and Win 2000Prof. Both would perform superior
functionality.
2. I looked @ 3 options for installation of XP Pro:
a) Burn or download all my data files to another drive or
CDs and perform a "Clean Install" to my hard drive of XP
Pro (or Home version). Re-load files after XP install.
b) Buy an external USB or Firewire (IEEE1394) hard drive
and install to it, planning to use a dual-boot routine.
c) Pull my hard drive (which is 60GB capacity), but a new
internal hard drive and install it w/ XP Pro and all my
previous applications along with the burned (saved) files.

A "Clean Install" is essential in any event under option a.
Even with a good file transfer program you should back-up
everything first before getting fancy. In point of fact,
it is best to have it done @ a reputable hard drive tech
department of a computer store ...or use the best: a data
recovery store/company/outfit.

Generally, to refer to your question #1, I would NOT mess
w/ the Win MS O/S just to become adept w/ XP or to have
the latest and greatest. Dual-boot (using two O/S on
either a partitioned hard drive or separate drives) can
result in problems. I tried it w/ Win95 and Win2000Prof
and had hang, file extension, and other occasional issues
that NEVER came up using a single O/S.

Let me know what YOU find out and decide.
