    - Unable to run any .EXE program files directly Windows ME boots and I get my normal desktop, but I am unable to launch any program files. However if a call an application from an associated file, the application opens. Eg. Double click on WORD.EXE either on the desktop or in Windows Explorer and I get an error message saying that I've typed the name in wrong and WORD.EXE cannot be found. If I double click on MYDOC.DOC, WORD.EXE opens and the file is displayed. This is the same for all program files that end in .EXE, that have a file association; the small amount of .COM files I have on the system all work fine.. So it must be something to do with how windows handles .EXE (just about all) files. Therefore I cannot run any of my normal tools to restore the system. Does anyone know what system files I should check and replace first to be able to directly run .EXE programs.     - Search function not working on ME Hey all.. Trying to help my distraugt daughter in college here.. she has a new Sony Vaio.. with Windows ME... All of a sudden, she lost her "search" function..     - MSgsrv32 (Not Responding) I keep getting the above information, and the Computer hangs or does not switch off. It happens over 10 times a day. I do not have a "Palm" connected to the Computer, and my ACPI file is down as "Archive" what can I do to alleviate this problem, when the only solutions on the Knowledge base are if you have a "Palm" connected.     - Win ME doesn't install I've run into the craziest problem. Install goes fine says copying files needed for setup... usually hangs there no drive lights.....just sits for five minutes or so so I reboot then same thing except this time drive lights flas and it says to remove the floppy and reboot so o.k. then It says boot record ide o.k. good so far then it says can not boot insert disk in drive A: and the process starts over....     - Ifshlp.sys Hi Good Folks, I've just been through the MS Knowledge base looking for info on a boot error I got this morning that said I was missing Ifshlp.sys. I have the file now (I checked) because I used my boot disk to get to System Restore. In the MS article there was no explanation of what might cause this file to vanish. I had Ifshlp.sys yesterday for sure: Windows loaded without a glitch, 'puter ran like a top (no blue screens, no errors, no lock-ups), and shut down perfectly at the end of the day. I've had one lock-up/poweroff today since the restore--caused by MailWasher (it occasionally throws me a blue screen, but it's one I can actually use "enter" to get out of most of the time). Anyone know what might have happened with Ifshlp.sys?--I'd like to avoid having a problem with it again.     - deleted file Computer was infected with a virus (Novarg)and the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHIMGAPI.DLL was deleted by Norton. The instruction was to replace it with an uninfected copy of the original. How do I do this? Please explain in very simple terms...don't assume I know anything. Thank you for your help.     - Where does my memory go? I've got a 900MHz Athalon with 384M memory installed. I can be doing nothing but editing a small document with Microsoft Word and my memory will drift from 170M available to 0M - then the system locks up. I don't even have to be physically editing anything. It's not only with Word either - I can have no apps open on this machine, just the operating system and watch the memory just dissapear to 0M and then either the system locks up or I get a BSOD - WHERE IS MY MEMORY GOING TO?     - Registry Checker error I have a problem similar to Paul Johnson's previous post although I don't know exactly what caused it. I was attempting to add this Me system to our router for internet access and suddenly when I re-booted I got the same message from the Registry Checker. I pressed OK and the system re-booted and when it came up the next time (just when it appeared to be finished loading the desktop, etc.) it jumped to a blue screen with the following error message: Filename:VMM(12)+00001A77 Error:0E:0028:C0280A77 I re-booted again and was back to the desktop with the Registry Checker error again. This cycle repeated with additional re-boots. So I ended the Registry Checker task, used the Symantec system scan to fix the registry (found and fixed 23 errors) and still I get the same Registry Checker error. Ran Symantec again and it found no registry errors and the machine seems to run fine. Still getting the Registry Checker error message every time I boot.     - Hide when minimized This may not be a Millinium specific question but the system has Millinium on it so I'll start with that as the OS. Taskbar is visisble. When I open up applications, for example Excel, and if I need to minimize one to get to something else. When I minimize the application item disappers from the Taskbar so I can't click on the item to restore it to full size. The only way I can bring it back is to use the Alt-Tab keystroke so the application is still open but i can't restore it to full size. The taskbar is visible the whole time. It is similiar to what occurs if you bring up the Task Manager and go to Options menu and check 'Hide when Minimized'. I must have set the same type of setting for all applications by accident because I can't find that setting for anything in looking through all the functions so far.     - locked-out of control panel Help!! My computer has shut me out of all of the files in control panel.     - New Board old Drive won't boot I upgraded the board and chip but I'm using my old HD and Ram. ME will not boot.     - Unknown Errors Every time my brother opens an application in windows ME this message appears; Explorer has caused an error in (unknown). Explorer will now quit. You can replace Explorer with any application name. We can't figure out why this is happening. He recently had some hardware installation problems but thought he had solved them.     - Autorun error 193 Don't know what I did or someone else in my family, haha, but when I install disk I get a message that says something like autorun could not open the disk, if you removed the disc, replace it. The error message is autorun 193. When I put in a game disc in for instance, the game screen will open where it lets you install, but after I hit install, I get this error.     - Problems with Norton Speed Disk For some reason I cannot use Norton Speed Disk on my laptop. It used to work fine but now it seems to get stuck. I have a Sony VAIO notebook running Windows Me, and a hard drive of 10 Gb that is partitioned in two drives, a C drive of about 4 Gb containing the operating system and program files and a D drive of about 6 Gb containing data files. The C drive contains about 2.5 Gb of data. When I try to defragment this drive a certain sequence occurs: Speed disk is first "optimizing folders", then does some "sorting" and finally goes on to the task of "optimizing". At first all seems to go fine, but then at some point the program gets stuck by just endlessly repeating the first two phases of "optimizing folders" and "sorting". This can go on for hours, but often the program just crashes and shuts down. I've tried to defragment in safe mode but Speed Disk won't run in this mode. I've checked disk integrity and all but cannot find anything wrong. Does anyone know what may be causing this behavior and how I can correct it?     - Memory space I need to delete some things to open up the memory on my hard drive. I recently had to re-install Windows because of a virus problem. When going through the re-install process, I was asked if I wanted to keep my old version of Windows. I answered yes and now my computer is running slower than ever.     - Windows hanging on 1st start up Hi all - Windows has started to hang on the first startup since day before yesterday. I thought at first it was just a 'thing', but, it is doing it with every new startup. After I turn it off with the power button, it then restart it comes up and works fine. I am not getting any error messages, it just freezes up It seems to load ok, I have my active desktop displayed, but, once that happens it just seems to hang, lock up, and I have to turn it off with the power button and then restart. . It stops processing at the same place each time, before the AV and then Zone Alarm loads. I recall seeing a few other posts about a same or similar event, but, can't nail them down, or remember the solution. I would truly appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a KB article or Help file that will address this. I found a couple of KB articles, but, they did not address this problem.     - folder options Can I set default folder viewing options for all folders without opening each folder and setting each individually.     - Deleting AOL files. I have inherited my kids HP computer now that they are off to college. I have deleted the main AOL program using Add/Remove but am left with 25 or so associated AOL files. All sorts of stuff. The os is Win ME. 1. Can I delete these files from the Search program or print them off and track them down with Windows Explorer or My Computer and still end up with a properly operating Win ME ? 2.
