Use F8 and specify a bootlog startup. When the system freezes during a
normal startup, shut down. Don't boot to safe mode which automatically
recreates/ overwrites the bootlog.txt file. Boot to DOS with a startup disk
instead.
Run edit from prompt and open the bootlog.txt file in root and search for
the string "fail" or manually search for a vxd that failed to load. Once you
confirm what vxd failed, you'll have a fighting chance to identify what
driver to update or replace.
If you identify the failing vxd to be a video adapter driver, for example,
boot to safe mode to remove device and driver files(inf files). Locate
compatible drivers for the device and try again to boot normally. Follow the
appropriate indications to install the device.
