Windows ME boots to desktop and then hourglass mouse
cursor for 3min, after that the mouse click doesn't open
or engage anything on the desktop. If I go down to the
taskbar the hourglass comes back. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't
bring up the Task Manager window either. The only thing I
can do is shut it down (and turn it back on).

I've check the mouse thoroughly - it's not the mouse.

Does this sound familiar to anyone...?

Can it be completely booted in Safe Mode ? [1]

[1] Tap <Ctrl> or <F8> repeatedly while booting; select "Safe Mode" from
the text-menu.
