Windows 98 and Windows ME

I have a computer that is running on Win98, I would like to uninstall
that and install WinME to the computer. Does anyone know how to
uninstall Win98 and install WinME? I know it is an old version, but
that is what I have on hand for this computer. Any help would be
great.

You cannot uninstall an operating system unless it was initially installed
as an upgrade to another and you have retained the previous operating
system's files and the uninstall information. Your choices are to
either upgrade your existing system or to clean install Win Me. If it is
some time since Win 98 was installed it might be better to clean install
Win Me but since this means formatting your hard drive please ensure that
you have backup copies of all your important documents, photos and the
like as well as passwords before you begin as otherwise these wil be lost
when you format the drive.

May I ask why you wish to install Win Me rather than stick with Win 98?
Both are unsupported systems and long out of support by Microsoft and it
might be better to stick with Win 98 rather than move to Win Me.

A good point, Mike. Upgrading to an unsupported system does look a little
questionable to say the least, now that you mention it. I feel a little
uncomfortable about re-installing it myself, even though I'm just installing
to a virtual machine and do, anyway, have supported systems to hand!

It did occur to me just yesterday that a year has passed since support ended
(has it not?). Feels kinda funny - I'm entirely used to it's predecessors
being defunct, and have always installed them almost as a historian. But now
that Millennium has joined them...and it really is only the anniversary of
the end of all support that has brought it home...

...I guess I can better understand the apparent 'zealots' who spent so much
time and energy claiming that 98 was better (yet seem to have given up
now?)...

...anyway! I deleted my virtual hard disks a while back. Among other things,
I wanted to start again with dedicated host and guest drives. But also, it
seemed every time I upgraded to 2007, I lost internet access in ME - while
retaining it in XP. I have now, though, successfully upgraded and retained
net access - though lost it in XP! I lost it in XP after installing the ~80
critical updates last night. I have recovered it now, though am not yet
absolutely certain how <vbg> although I *suspect* the whole debacle has been
a consequence of connecting as to a network. Connection that way seems
intermittent. Millennium is currently connected 'straight to' the internet.
Anyway, they both work now - in VPC2007 - and are in an up-to-date (well, as
much as Win ME can be!) but not overly-customised, so I shall copy them
(with the guest drive having storage space to this end) and begin testing in
earnest. I currently have 5 installations of XP just on this one computer -
and it'll probably be more before the day's over!

Also I now have the Additions.iso from Virtual Server 2005 R2, though
whether that makes any difference, I don't know! I believe it's main value
is that it supports Vista.

I got to burn your CD last night after resolving my burning problems which
seem to have been caused by an "iffy" buffer on the NEC2510A burner on
that box. I replaced it with a new Pioneer DVR112 and not only is it
capable of burning faster if I should so wish but also does so without any
of the buffer problems I had been seeing in the past few weeks. Hopefully
I'll manage to get the disk in the post to you this w/e.

Good to read you're still playing with VPC and getting it to work
including Win Me in 2007.

I want to install my modem, but it isnt being supported by Win98, so I
thought that I might upgrade it up one to ME as it is for my father
and I heard ME was pretty simple. I have XP on my computer but it is
in Japanese, and he cannot read it, so I am at a crossroads as to what
to do, install XP or ME. I know that 98 and ME are no longer supported
but they are still being used by people who want easier userability to
the computer and internet.
I guess I will let you know how I go with uninstalling and
reinstalling. IF all else fails I can take it to a computer shop or
buy a new computer for them.
