IE refreshing
When I open Internet Explorer and select the C drive it

Hard drive space issue
I'm running Windows ME on my HP Pavilion Laptop, which has
an 8 GB hard drive. I recently started getting messages
about the disk drive running out of room, so started
deleting files and programs. It seems each time I delete
something the space is immediately sucked up by something
else, not sure what. I've run virus scans, clean disk,
scan disk and disk defrag. Any ideas? I also noted a large
amount of space being taken up by
C:\Windows\TEMP...exactly what is this file and can any of
it be deleted safely? (It's not Internet temp files, those

System Boot Anomaly
Last week I installed the following Windows updates:
KB824145 for IE6 SP1
KB825119 for Windows ME and
KB828026 for Media Player.
Since installing these updates I've been experiencing a
number of system anomalies.
How about it Microsoft? Are these updates contributing to
issues described below?
Issue 1: The hyperlinks, e.g., My Documents, My Computer,
etc. no longer function from the Start Menu ( see the
thread of my post "Loss of Hyperlink Functionality" from
11/19/2003). Removing one of the updates (IE Update
Q824145) as suggested by one of the respondents had no
effect.
Issue 2: For the past two days I haven't had a single
clean boot of my computer. The process advances to the
stage with a blank blue screen (the desktop background)
and hangs. The mouse is useless for little more that
running the cursor around on the screen. The only response
from the keyboard comes when I press CTRL-ALT-DEL. This
invokes a sound from within the machine that makes me
think that a rapid-fire mechanical woodpecker
(metalpecker?) is attacking the hard drive.
The only recourse is to power down. Naturally, on the
subsequent reboot ScanDisk is activated (Improper shutdown
detected. Checking disk for errors.). Previously I've been
able to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk when I knew that I had
not shut down properly and the boot sequence would resume
and complete. Now if I try to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk
the system hangs and it's back to a power down/reboot
attempt. Fortunately, letting ScanDisk run to completion -
over the course of 8 to 12 minutes - results in a
resumption of the boot process culminating in a successful
reboot.
Now the kicker. The reboot issue may not be associated
with any of the updates. Examination of C:\SCANDISK.LOG
reveled the following:

What is FSInfoSector and what's its function?
If ScanDisk was able to fix the error why do I continue to
have problems?
Is the reported 8 to 12 minute ScanDisk time appropriate

ME shuts down computer
When I was using WIN 98 with a different mother board, the program
would stop at the shut-off warning screen without actually turning the
computer off. With ME and a new mother board, the computer turns
itself off. Is this turning the computer off, a function of ME, or

About half the time during my startups I get one of the
following messages:

I then need to restart the computer manually then it
starts fine and performs fine. This has been going on
sporadically for some time. Any ideas?

To much memory?
I recently found out that ME only supports up to 512mb of
memory, I have 768mb plus. I have been having alot of blue
screen errors and vairious things freeze up. Is there a
patch that will enable all my memory and free up my

Disk defragmenter hanging
The disk defragment first begins to check drive for errors
and seconds later " drive's contents changed restarting.."
to begin again " Checking drive for errors" on and on...
I already tried the knowledge base # 218160 - Disk
defragmenter hangs after choosing disk to defragment -
suggestions, cleaning up the disk, scanning it for errors,
scanning it from DOS prompt, running an antivirus, turning
off all programs. Reinstalled windows.....nothing worked.
Any suggestions?

corrupted or not valid log file
Step by step Interactive insists in its own installation
everytime the computer is turned on. Step by step
interactive cannot be uninstalled, because of a mrun32.isu
file is corrupted or missing. The error message is " The
log file C:\Windows\mrun32.isu is not valid or data has
been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue."
I already tried alternative 129605 and 265371 from the
knowledge base - How to extract original compressed
windows files and how to extract and replace a protected
file in windows.
Does anyone one know if Microsoft still has an ftp
provider for this kind of missing file?

I am running Windows ME. When I try to save data to my CD
drive I get a message "you do not have permission to open

HTML messages in Outlook
When I compose a new e-message in Outlook in HTML format,
attachments do not show up at the receiving individuals
computer. If I change everything to Plain Text format
they receive my attachment just fine. Is it not possible
to have an HTML format with attachments. I see the

Missing dll and assorted error messages
On boot up I get 3 error message box's
1) error starting program
a required ddl file, ecomwr.dll, was not found
2) error starting program
a required ddl file, icqrt.dll, was not found
3) update
error reading information from the registry!
can anyone explain what I need to do in order to get these
problems solved. Where do I go to retrieve or repair or
reinstall in order to eliminate these messages and get my
computer running properly again?

No sound. Lost applications
Help! I first lost my sound, and now I noticed that I do

Cannot delete infected file
AVG Antivirus shows my computer infected with the Trojan
Horse "DOWNLOADER.TOONCOM.K", and "DOWNLOADER.EXE" is
trying to access the internet. When the anti-virus tries
to delete the file "C:\_Restore\Temp\A0347590.CPY", I get
an error message saying the file cannot be moved/deleted.
I get the same message when I try to delete the file

Software Problem
I am having a problem using my AOL 9.0. I've contacted AOL
several times and they told me it was a problem with
Windows. The problem is that everytime I click on my AOL
icon it opens up to a blank screen; the only thing visible

Exporer problems. It wont open my comp/docs etc...
Had a problem with games keep freezing/crashing. tried to
sort. Reinstalled windows as last hope. Got there but
windows mucked up graphics driver (nvidiatnt32). Sorted
that but now when i try and open my computer, my docs and

Found out the errpr is to do with a windows media player

running" which there arent, only explorer and system tray
apart from net of course. please help im going mad with
frustation.

Taskbar Frozen
After starting or rebooting my computer, the clock on the
taskbar takes about 5 minutes to load (also, I cannot
click on anything on the task bar -or even use the windows
key on the keyboard- until the clock has loaded). After a
period of time, the entire taskbar freezes. I am able to
Alt-Tab between programs and able to open new programs
from the desktop, but I cannot click on anything on the
taskbar, and no new programs opened or closed are
reflected on the taskbar.
Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Administrator Rights
Hello,
I was trying to install AT&T Internet service, and thier
tech support says that I need to know the administrator
password to install the software or register it. I only
have one user created and have never logged on as anyone
else. I thought I was the administrator. What happens when
I try to register I get an error on thier software that
says, unable to complete because account is inactive. I
don't think it's a Windows problem, but they say it is.

Computer shuts down while in use
I am at my wits end here, while using the PC ( playing
games, etc..) my PC screen goes blank and the mouse (
Trackball ) shuts down. this also happens when left alone
for a period of time. The only way to get the PC going
again is to switch it off manually then switch it back on
again. I have no idea why this happens or how to fix it.

Does win ME keep a record of events such as unhiding files or opening a certain program?
just wondering if win ME has some kind of log file that records events and
operations conducted on a computer, like whether files have been unhidden,
or whether an email application was opened up, and at what time. Does this

Autoinstall on start of WIndows ME Step by Step Interactive
Everytime I start my computer with windows ME a window
opens with the setup for the Windows ME Step by Step
Interactive.
I tried to install and uninstall it just after, but comes

Defrag problem
I tried to run defrag and it would only go to 10% and then
start all over again.; This went on fo hours and never
went past 10%. Is this a programs running in the
background problem? If so how do I get around it? My

picture saving problem
i'm trying to save my pics to a cd-r/cd-rw. it will not
work for some reason. it keeps giving me a message
saying "access denied. make sure the disk is not full or
write protected." they are brand new cd's. i called
emachines and he said the disc has to be formatted. i
never had this problem before and i also have a fujifilm
cd-rw and the pics save with no problem. any suggestions
