System W/ME on Dell Dimension 4100
I recently had to reinstall ME operating system and
shortly thereafter was alterted that there was a critical
update ie: MS IE Service Pack 1, Windows ME.

Problem is:
Before it completes installing the update I get the error
message: "Set-up was unable to install all components.
Please close all applications and try again."

I have tried and no-go. Also tried a minimal install but
also no-go. Dell tech said not to worry as this was a
common occurance.

What now? Any ideas or is this not a problem?

For the "unable to install all components" issue in WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a temp folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

My suggestion is keep them for a few days and then dump them.

Good luck,

Zee

Hi, sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I
have a related one - I'm getting a kernel 32 error in
TurboTax. Their online chat said to go to microsoft and
install updates. The problem, at least it seems like a
problem, it that no update opportunities come up.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Carol

ONLY if you did the reinstall without first uninstalling IE6. That's why
you can't complete the installation. There is a "version soup" of IE ...
a gumbo of IE 5.5 and 6. If Zee's suggested resolution does not work,
please post back.
