    - Can't get computer started Every time I start up my computer I get this message that says: "A device file that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI is damaged. It may be needed to run windows. You may need to run the Windows Setup program again. If the file is included in another software package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses the file. VTD Press a key to continue" This message pops up right after the "Windows Millenium Edition" startup screen finishes. The problem is that when I DO press a key, the same thing happens and it wont let me actually access anything. The second problem is I don't know what the VTD stands for.     - dumprep.exe In WinME, I found this file running under "processes" after hitting the CTL-ALT-DEL keys. I have an error message that pops up on my screen. If I try to get out of it, it pops right back up. However, when I End Process for "dumprep.exe", I am able to close the error message window (until next time I reboot). What does this file do?     - Mouse/Sound card? I am having problems with my mouse disappearing. I was told that I needed to reinstall my sound card from the CD that came with my computer -- or download an updated one. I am wondering if I heard this right...can a mouse act up because of a malfunctioning sound card? I just wanted an opinion if anyone had ever heard of this.     - DSL MODEM & SOUND PROBLEM I connected DSL modem and my pc kept freezing up, but works fine when I disco the DSL. AOL says it is a USB port problem, but repair shop says they are fine and suggested I be sure to have all Windows updates downloaded. I did that, but now I have no sound at all! Any suggestions???     - System Restore doesn't work! When I try to launch system restore, I can get past the first two screens where I tell it I want to set a restore point, give it a name, and after that it tells me that I need to shut down and restart the computer in order to use system restore.     - Win Media Player 9 and Codecs I downloaded a movie with an .avi extension and tried to play it in WMP9. It started looking for codecs and came back in error stating: "Class not registered" I sought help here and got a response with two links to go to that should help. I tried the first link which told me to identify the codec that's missing. This info isn't listed anywhere in my error box. So I tried the second link. O.K.....I did what I was told to do and everything listed at the site I was directed to. The second link said to reinstall WMP9 over existing one. I reinstalled WMP9 and nothing happened, It also said to open the file in "mplayer.exe" to find out what codec is missing instead, it gave me a message stating: "MMSYSTEM006 There is no driver installed on this system". What does this mean and where is this driver it speaks about? Thanks! So in my response to this question....I was told to look in my DXDIAG file. But I wasn't told what to look for.     - photos/imaging I used to open Image Preview by double-clicking a picture. Since I re-formatted, it opens Picture It instead.     - Not being able to open attachments I am running windows ME on a laptop that has OE 6.0 and have been unable to open attachements on a regular basis. Some are opened OK and others show OE message that it has not allowed the opening of the attachment due the possbility of a virus. When I forward the e-mail to my desktop (running WIndows 95 and OE 5.5 I am able to open the attachments, usually .doc or .eml files). How can I change the settings on OE 6.0 to give me more flexibility to open these types of attachments?     - Freezing after being online About 95% of the time, as soon I exit AOL, my system freezes. My computer dows not respond to Ctrl Alt Delete to shut it down so I must do this manually. Of course it than reboots in safemode and more time to get back to my normal desktop. AOL has given many different suggestions, but to no avail. How about one of you?     - Shutdown problem When I try to access the printer folder to add more printers the computer freezes. Trying to shutdown Win Me, I get a blue screen with the following message An error OE has occurred at 0028:C027A0C4 in VxD VREDIR(03) + 000010C4. This was called from 0028:C0069164 in VxD VREDIR9(01) + 000073D8. It may be possible to continue normally. * Press any key to attempt to continue. * Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer.     - Windows ME Critical Updates The download was doing great. I removed the downloads that require individual downloads and proceeded with the other ones.     - System Restore Failed On a couple of occasions recently I have tried to use System Restore when three or four restore points are shown to be available. The restores have failed with the message "System restore failed to restore your computer. Please try another Restore point" (wording may not be exact). Choosing a different point had no effect. I have Norton System Utilities which has a known problem in this area, but I have checked the Norton feature which causes the problem and it was disabled anyway (Disk Health sensor in System Doctor).     - System Resource or Windows Protection Error Since MSN automatically downloaded 8.5 I have been having intermittant erors with Windows ME. I either get msg that there are crirically low resources or a Windows protection error. In case of resources critically low cannot select "ignore" have to select "close". System then displays msg that a program has caused an error in "DIBENG.DLL" which I close out of. Sometimes system works normal but many times Instant Messenger aborts and system does not respond normally and must restart computer to either regain IM or system functionality.     - Win ME, MSN messenger and ie6 errors I have reformated, reinstalled Windows ME, IE6, MSN6, all necessary drivers and updated everything necessary. It should be a smooth running PC ! The fact is I am plagued with ie errors, crashes, freezes and unexpected reboots. I think MSN is the problem. I deleted messenger and ran the PC for a day with little or no problems but as soon as i reinstalled it the problems started again. Anyone else had the same problem?     - Cookie File Installed new harddrive, using Partition Magic so I can boot from either drive until after I get the new one set up with everything. Problem is I managed to copy my cookie file from the old drive to the new one by way of using one of the partitions. Can't seem to get a copy of the index.dat file from the old drive (cookie folder) to the new one, neither one will let me get a copy of it. Any help is appreciated.     - not sure what the problem is I have Internet Explorer 6 on my computer. It is difficult to connect if my computer has been inactive for a while. You have to either shut down the computer and wait a minute or two and then try to connect or restart the computer. Then you can keep an internet connection for about 30 minutes sometimes more sometimes less. I have had my phone lines tested and they are fine. I have called my ISP for tech support and they say it's not them with the problem maybe its me. What would be causing this? I can only get a good fast internet connection if I shut down or restart my computer. Then if it slows down and bumps me off if I restart/shut down my computer and reconnect I get a good connection.     - IPHLPAPI.DLL the IPHLPAPI.DLL file will not open, please locate the file to determine the problem I get the above message when the machine boots up. The only reference I can finsd so far is related to this happening when a program may be running.     - Msimn has caused an error in directdb.dll I keep getting the error message listed in the subject line whenever I start Outlook Express 6. I have not added any new hardware or software. System is virus free. If I reboot my system 5 or 6 times, I can eventually get my email to download before the error message comes up. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?     - Widws ME not functioning properly The "IPHLPAPI.DLL" file cannot start error message appears. What is this file? It locks up when I try instaling software with the message "Windows is installing your new software" but does not proceed. I cannot access downloaded files and it locks up again.     - What is MPREXE.exe ? I just installed Norton Personal Firewall on PC with Windows ME and have RoadRunner internet service (cable modem). A security alert has popped up about 20 times now for MPREXE.exe trying to access IP addresses on the internet on port 137. Each time I set a rule to block access to that specific program and IP address. After about 20 times of blocking access, each to a different IP address, I set a rule to block all access to all IP addresses and all ports. I did a reverse IP address lookup for some of the addresses and found some in the U.S. and one in Korea (I didn't recognize any of the site names and didn't go to any of them). MPREXE.exe is a small (28k) program file in the c:\windows\system32 folder. Does anyone know what it is and why it wants so much access to the internet?     - REINSTALLING WINDOWS ME I reinstalled Windows Me and followed the instructions. After a few tries, it reinstalled clean. On the WINDOWS ME CD Disk I followed instructions and recommendations. The part where it said: Install into Windows? or Windows.000, I reinstalled it into WINDOWS. Success finally. But now I have two huge files WINDOWS and WINDOWS.000? The WINDOWS.000 works fine, as far as I can See! But the WINDOWS file is taking up over a Gig of space. Can I safely delte the original WINDOWS File to pick up space?     - Modem for distinctive ring I am running Windows ME and have WinFaxPro 10.0. WinFax Pro does not support the distinctive ring feature for some modems, including the Lucent Win modem that came installed in my HP 7940. The easiest solution is to replace the Lucent Win Modem with one that will support distinctive ring for WinFaxPro. Symantic gave me a list of modems that don't work, but not a list of those that do. My question: how can I know, before buying and installing, that the modem will work, i.e., that WinFax Pro, in a system running Windows ME, will support distinctive ring on the new modem? .     - Use of Shift Keys with Internet Explorer Aloha, This is my 3rd post to the board trying to find some help with this small problem I have been having with my computer for about 2 1/2 weeks. It never happened before, but now, when I have Internet Explorer open and am viewing a web page, and then I open another window, such as this window I am typing into now, an email message or just a simple microsoft word document, as soon as I hit the shift key, the window minimizes and I am returned to the Internet Explorer page as my view. So for example, I opened up the Microsoft newsgroup message board and then clicked the "post" key to post this message. As soon as I hit the shift key to try and capitalize a word in this document, this window minimized and then returned back to the newsgroup page. If I hit shift again, it does not bring this window back on top. I have been told to try cleaning my old keyboard and then to replace my keyboard. I just purchased a new one today and I still have the same problem. I was also told to simply reboot my computer to fix the problem, but that has not helped either.
