    - Microsoft Word Viewer I have a friend still with Windows Me who cannot open Microsoft Office documents. I have searched the Microsoft website for a Word Viewer but the oldest I can find appears to be Word Viewer 2003 which doesn't appear compatible with Windows Me. Before installing Office, I used to have Word Viewer 1997 but not surprisingly, it doesn't appear to be available on Microsoft website. When asked to select OS from list, got message HP no longer carries printer downloads/disks for 95, 98SE, or Me. You have to use your original installation disks.     - Upgrade nvidia 5200 to nvidia 6200 OC, interested in a hot new intel Ogg, Mike M, and all those still interested I just ran across your conversation thread from July 31, 2007 that is close to a problem I=92m having. I upgraded to the Nvidia 5200 several months back and had good results with it for a couple months. Then it began to fail in odd ways so I upgraded it to the BFG Tech version of =93Nvidia GeForce 6200 OC.=94 This works well except if / when my system starts to go to sleep and puts up the screen saver, it will lock up. The only way to get it back is to cycle power. Can someone give me the skinny on how to surmount? I don't even remember how to change the timer for putting up the screen saver. Also I noticed Ogg was looking for =93a *new* barebone system just old enough to still support WinME.=94 I may have some good news. This Spring I built a little PC for daur., using a new Intel DG33BU mob, Dual Core CPU, on board video, on board HD audio, etc. In setting its CMOS, I came across an interesting feature that allowed it to be used with old OS=92s via mimicking an old BIOS or some such.     - ActiveX My pc is brain dead, trying to do most any thing gives me a Microsoft Internet Explorer message "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly" And in fact pages don't disply anything. I feel I lost needed files when I found keystroke software and had to reboot to finish removal using XSPY spyware software.     - Free version of Acronis v8 Hello: Here's an item from the Win 98 general newsgroup that may be of interest to some. Acronis True Image v8 supports Win 98 thru XP, including ME. However, while it supports ATA drives, it may not support SATA drives. I'm not sure. It seems to be a multi-step process, to fill out the request in the link below, then to fill out a free registration form, and then to login and download the free version of Acronis v8 from the list of registered software, but it does work.     - RE: Problem with computer freezing while using IE 6 In case you're interested: I had posted back in late March that I was having problems with a 7- year-old IBM Netvista constantly freezing while using Internet Explorer 6. I sent the motherboard off to http://www.badcaps.net to have the capacitors replaced at a cost of $65 for 'standard' capacitors. This has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made. The computer very rarely freezes now. Usually it's because there's a problem with a particular website or I've got too many things open. I just wanted to say that http://www.badcaps.net did really good work for what's turned out to be a very reasonable price. There's no way that I would have been able to purchase a new computer now.     - music burner problem i currently use musicmatch to burn my cd's. never had a problem before until i ininstalled jave, which i did reinstall it, and i uninstalled outlook express which i know is for mail. i currently installed mozilla firefox because my explorer freezes up on me all the time. now for some reason when i go to burn a cd, it goes thru all the motion and when i play the disc there is nothing on it. does anyone know what i can do to fix this? or what i might have done to cause this??     - Power Point Viewer 2003 I have a question regarding PPV 2003. I've received a couple of presentations that *do have music,* - however I can't hear it. When forwarded to folks, they are able to hear the music. Yet, 99% of the other PP presentations that do have music in my system - I can hear them perfectly! I have tried to Google downloads for update versions, and the only free download I could find was PP Viewer 2007 - which requires Windows 2000 SP4. Since I'm running Win ME, I am unable to find an upgrade. Does any of you have any ideas as of what could be wrong? Or do I have to accept the fact that I indeed need to 'dump' Win ME and upgrade to a more current system? Lastly, I don't know whether this is relevant, but early this year I installed Open Office.org 2.4, which has the suite of programs, including presentations.     - RE: Just upgraded to vista and have several problems Hi I just upgraded to Vista about 2 weeks ago and I am having several problems with it. (1) With UAC on I can't open Itunes. If I turn off UAC then I can open Itunes with no problem and use my ipod with it. (2) When viewing videos on youtube or msn I can't hear the audio with UAC on but when I turn it off I can hear the audio just fine. I am sure there are other problems that I have not found yet. So my question is; should I reinstall Vista on my computer and do a hard install? When I upgraded to vista I ran the HP Upgrade Assistant and then installed Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade. I am not sure I can do a hard install with this upgrade but I would try if I could. What do you think?     - Windows Protection Error - HELP! For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your system. When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power. I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large number of possibilites as the cause. I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and automatically fixed.     - C:\_Restore\TEMP A previous post made me curious about C:\_Restore\TEMP (Windows ME, of course), which I looked at and found thousands (I think about 3000) of files, some create/modified as early as 2001. I reduced the disk space for system restore and then disabled it, interspersed with a reboot or two. Then C:\_Restore\TEMP showed no files; it was empty. I then enabled system restore and did a reboot. A system checkpoint was created and I created another restore point. Now C:\_Restore\TEMP has 93 files, many with creation dates as early as 2003 and many with modified dates earlier (Feb 2008, March 2008, April 2008) than May 2008 (today's system date is May 2, 2008).     - cdrom not reading files "sees" all files as music I do volunteer work repairing computers for the disablied. I had an old copy of ME. For several years I used it so I decided to upgrade a computer using win98 to ME. All went find except for 2 problems. The major one is it will no longer read the files system on cd-rw. It sees all files as music. This was not a problem for this machine in win98. How do I work around this problem? Another smaller problem is that the machine no longer shuts down completely by itself. A message comes on screen saying it is safe to turn off the computer. I am guessing this has to do with adci (not sure if those are the right letters I think it is aa power management issue).     - Can't get past splash screen A friend's laptop recently went faulty so he decided, as it's 7 years old, to treat himself to a new one. However, he needs a couple of things off the old one if at all possible, so he brought it to me. It boots, completes the POST OK and then shows the Windows ME splash screen - but gets no further, no matter how long you leave it. Pressing the "Esc" key to get rid of the splash screen and see what's going on reveals the following text: "Please wait while setup updates your config files. This may take a few minutes". After about two minutes, it shows: "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2" and that message repeats at two minute intervals for as long as you leave it.     - dll is linked to missing export Kernel32 Please help. What should I do? It says: Error Starting Program The WLANAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:GetSystemWindowsDirectoryW. The date on the dll file is 11/10/07, and the Kernel32 is date 6/8/2000. When I click on OK, there is a box underneath that says C:\Programs\D-Link\AirGCFG.exe A device attached to the system is not functioning. I have WinME on an IBM Thinkpad laptop with 256M Ram, and everything has been running fine for a long time. Except I don't use the laptop very often, and I can't remember if my almost new D-Link wireless card worked last month or not. I have a wireless-b card that I might have used then. But now the D-link bg-card wasn't working so I went to reinstall the software that goes with it. It required me to uninstall the software first, so I did and I reinstalled, and then it won't start the software and when I click on the icon, it gives the message WLANAPI.dll was missing, so I found and downloaded a copy of that. Then it wanted WZCSAPI.dll, so I dl'd a copy of that, which was dated 5/13/04. Now I get the messages at the top. I've googled but not found what I need. It ran on a 1996 PC, designed for Windows 95. And it ran better than Windows 98. The only problem was with Windows Media Player and Movie Maker, caused by not enough memory or something like that, but that was OK, since the machine was older even then. I don't hate Windows Me, I even like it, no matter that it is the most hated Windows OS ever. I actually have seen more problems in XP Home than in Me. XP Pro> XP Home. Maybe if it stayed for a bit longer, and had a SP it would become quite good. I know a lot of people say that Me sucked because of drivers. Well, it may be true, but actually, I have never had any problems with it. It even ran well on a 1996 PC, with a Cyrix processor better than Windows 98. And the PC was designed for Windows 95!!! I want to save all of my data onto an external hard drive, but my computer won't even allow me to use Windows Explorer. What should I do? Also, I have my Comcast internet connected to this computer along with a wireless router, and all my other computers in the house are able to connect to the internet via the wireless router. My wife has Windows ME on her system and I am running XP. We need a printer
with ME drivers so are thinking of the Canon Pixma 160.

Anyway, if we get that and I attach it to my system as a shared printer and
give her permissions, etc., should she be able to use that via the network
using ME?
