IF I left click on an the icon for a word pad document or
if I right click on the icon and select open I get a
message telling me that MDC42U.dll is missing. If I right
click on the icon and select open with wordpad the
document opens. How can this annoyance be fixed. When I
performa search this file cannot be found.

Assuming you mean mfc42u.dll rather than mdc42u.dll Win Me doesn't use
mfc42u.dll but instead uses mfc42.dll. mfc42u.dll was probably installed as
part of some other package, the problem though is to try and determine which
package that might have been and then either repair or reinstall it..

One possible solution is to use system restore to rollback your system to
before you started having problems with this file provided that that was not
too long ago. Alternatively what changes did you make to your system just
prior to this problem beginning? Have you tried reversing those changes?

It was a typo i did mean mfc42u.dll. I don't know what
caused the problem.

I tried to use system restore t fix the problems, but
would get a message after rebooting that the system could
not be restored to the date I requested (didn't matter
which date I would select.)

The following is what the exact problems were and what was
done to fix them:

1:wordpad.exe disappeared. That has been corrected by
getting information as to which cab file contained
wordpad.exe.
2: I could no longer download anything from Microsoft ie.
windows update or support sites. The browser would
close. I could browse the internet and download files
from non microsoft site. I tried to reinstall the
internet explorer from the folder where the install files
were stored, but that didn't work. Finally I got to a MS
site where I managed to download the Internet Explorer
and all is fixed

To the best of my knowledge I made no changes. All of a
sudden the problems started. Is there a way to stop this
message from appearing? How do I get the programs looking
to open wordpad.exe to find where I have reinstalled
wordpad.exe? I can right click and use the open with
selection and wordpad.exe opens.

In both of the obove instances I was receiving the
MFC42U.dll error message. Additionally I was getting an
HTML viewer error message when trying to go to the windows
update site. This error message has not reappeared. I
get the MFC42U.dll missing message everytime a file looks
to automatically open wordpad.exe.

Copy of my previous post to your later (second) thread:-

OK, rant done, now - Why is it missing?

Probably because it is NOT part of WinMe - nor Win98 for that matter! - and
is NOT included with the installation disks.

It's part of other applications e.g. Works Suite 2001, Encarta, etc., so I
would suggest you try searching on the MS Knowledge Base for mfc42u to see
which applications MAY apply to your PC, then try re-installing it/them.

John you said your system restore did not work, have you installed patc
q290700? This fixes a restore problem in WIN ME. I was getting the same
message you got until I installed this patch.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290700

Won't fix your dll problem but should fix restores in the future.
I did a search of my WIN ME system and found that dll is used by Creative
sound blaster, my canon camera, microsoft visual c++, Bs clip cd write and
microsofts personal webserver. Are you using any of these vendors?
