Help! I tried to start up Age of Empires and it said I
needed Direct X 9. I went to Microsoft and downloaded
it, at the end I got an error message on the blue screen
of death. I re-boot the computer and it gets hung up on
the "Microsoft ME" opening page. I tried to start in
safe mode, but that doesn't work either. I don't know
what to do because I even did a scanreg /restore on
command prompt and that didn't work. ANY HELP YOU CAN
PROVIDE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. PLEASE EMAIL ME AT

This assumes that you hadn't picked up a virus - you may need to check using
a DOS virus checker from www.f-prot.com

As you can't get it to work in Safe Mode either, (presumably it 'hangs' as
in Normal Mode?) then you are running out of options and are only left with
trying to boot using the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk into Real Mode DOS and
see if you can recover from there.

Boot using the Windows Startup (floppy) Disk and choose 4) Minimal Boot.
At the A:\> prompt, type "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space
between the g and /) then press Enter.
Follow the screen prompts and when asked, select the last 'good' date before
you D/L'd DX9 and the PC ran OK, continuing with the instructions.

Don't forget to remove the floppy disk BEFORE you tell the machine to
reboot.

Hopefully, this method may get your pc running again.

Matt-

Thanks for the reply. I have tried a system restore
through command prompt, but it still hangs on that open.
Do you think that if I disconnect all my USB connections
and try it that it may work? I read somewhere that it
may be a conflict in hardware (even though I don't know
how that would all of a sudden happen.)

Well it certainly will not do any harm to try <g> but the USB issues you
describe usually lock-up before the opening screen anyway.

However, did you try my suggestion?

Matt-

I had already done the scanreg /restore and nothing
happened at all. It rebooted and just hung on the boot
page again.

Todd, you say that: > I had already done the scanreg /restore

Do you mean booting from, and trying it with, the Startup Disk?

and then you said: > and nothing happened at all.

Did it attempt to restore the registry before 'it re-booted' or did it not
even give you the restoration options?

Then you said: > ...It rebooted and just hung on the boot page again.

Do you mean a black DOS screen, or the WinMe splash screen or the Desktop
screen?

Have you tried running the F-protect virus checker in Real Mode DOS?

Mart
