My WindowsMe freezes all the time. The latest occurance was when my
wife was having trouble with our ALL-IN-ONE printer. I've tried to use
scandisk to fix any problems, but it keeps restarting mid-process. And
scandisk only seems to work in standard mode. I'm considering
reinstalling the operating system, but I assume that would wipe
everything off my computer. Is there a way to save everything I have
before starting this process? Better still, other than upgrading, what
are my options?

Run scandisk in safe mode.

If you want to reinstall Windows ME, reinstall Windows on top of itself. You
will not lose data. Boot up with your Windows CD. If not bootable, boot to
DOS with CD ROM support. If you don't have such boot disk, get one from
www.bootdisk.com. While in DOS, put in your Windows CD. Type "setup" or
"E:\setup" without the quotes.

If you don't have the Windows CD, the system files may be in the CABS
folder. From a:> type "c:\windows\options\cabs\setup" without the quotes and
hit ENTER.

I tried running scandisk in safe mode and my machine froze on me while
it was running. It actually froze twice at roughly the same point. The
scandisk was scanning clusters when it froze (that probably doesn't
mean anything). It sounds like my only option is to reinstall windows
ME on top of itself from the CD like you suggest. Hope that works. I
have not installed any new programs other than Ad-aware 6.0 in quite a
while. My machine is protected by McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan. Is
this "freezing" thing a problem with Windows ME? It's not the first
time it's happened, so should I change my operating system?

Nothing is working. I reinstalled Windows ME and the darn thing froze
during scandisk again! What are my options?

Maybe it's your hard drive as that is what Scandisk is scanning.
