This particular problem is often the result of a damaged IE6 install, yes I
do realise you are talking about Windows Explorer rather than Internet
Explorer but the two are linked. May I suggest that you try repairing IE6.
Do this using Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft
Internet Explorer 6, click Add/Remove and then on the next screen select
"Repair Internet Explorer" and then OK.
If for some reason you have no entry for IE6 in Add/Remove then the
following
is an extract from KB 293907 - "How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6"
(
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=293907) which covers the problem where
there is no entry in Add/Remove Programs and includes the following:
"How to Repair or \Return to Previous Internet Explorer Installation
If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if
Internet Explorer 5 (sic, should read "6") is not listed in the Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet
Explorer
Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and
then
in the Open box, type ALL ON ONE LINE the following command, and then click
OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
Se also KB 194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool"
(
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=194177) and make certain you read right
to
the end especially the section below the long list of files.

You might want to try this first:
Run "Repair" on Internet Explorer. (Yes... Internet Explorer.)
Control Panel> Add/remove programs. IE> add/remove> repair.
-------------------------------
NOTE 1:- this fix is said NOT to work in IE5.5 !!
NOTE 2: - BACK UP the registry first!!
NOTE 3: - download the file, then change the .txt extension to .reg, and
right-click on the file, Select Merge, and reboot when it says OK.
(the following is the downloaded file, copy and save as the .reg file)
