Over the past several years, I have accumulated more than
600Megs in the Windows/Temp folder. Not all of these
files have a .tmp extension.

When I run the Disc Cleanup Utility in the Windows ME
System Tools, it seems that mainly Internet Explorer
cookie files, some PC Health files, and a few other types
are deleted, but generally Windows/Temp folder files keep
accumulating.

How can I know which of these are safe to delete? Are
any of these somehow essential to the system?

-Eliuri

reboot, then delete EVERYTHING in the c:\windows\temp folder.
I run a batch file automatically that clears the temp folder at every boot up.

Unless you are part way through a program install that will require a reboot
to finish, it is always safe to delete any and all files in the Temp folder
that Windows will let you delete. (It won't let you delete any that are in
actual use.)

I've never been impressed with the native cleanup tool. It doesn't do a very
good job. I recommend a manual cleaning. For exact steps on the simple
process, see Step 4, "Taking Out the Trash," on my Computer Health page:

Thanks Mr Eshelman for this advice and the link to that site.
On your site , in that section : 4. Take Out the Trash , you suggest:
<<1. Close all running programs. Give yourself a clean working space for
what follows. It may even be a good idea to restart the computer first, just
to have things a little more pristine.>>>>>
Would you suggset simply shutting all unneeded programs via Alt-Ctrl-Del or
should I also shut down programs running in the background via running the
msconfig and uncheking startup programs runnning in the background?

Also, would you deem it safe to delete files in the TMP folder with the .exe
extension?
-----------------------

You're welcome, Eliuri. With regard to the last question first: Yes, by all
means it's OK to delete .EXE files in the TEMP and TMP folders if you have
already rebooted. Here's a clue: If Windows gives you the option -- by
presenting a yes/no question -- then it's safe to say Yes. If the file were
currently in use, Windows wouldn't give you the choice, and if it's *not* in
use, then it's safe to remove from the Temp folder.

As to shutting things down, no need to go to extremes. The main reason for
closing programs in advance is to minimize the chance that you will have
Temp files in use. Nothing bad will happen with open programs -- there just
may be a few that Windows won't let you delete, and that's not a big deal.
Generally it's better to keep something from opening, rather than use
Ctrl+Alt+Del to close it, because C+A+D is sort of an emergency way to close
things and doesn't necessarily close very neatly -- it leaves system
resources allocated and doesn't clean up after itself very well. But for the
present purpose, it's not a big thing.

Bottom line, just reboot to make sure that any pending processes are
finished, then go wipe out anything in the folder that Windows will let you.
If you want, do the reboot into Safe Mode and this will all be even easiesr.

Feel free to write back if you have any more questions, and also to let us
know how everything works out.
