    - System Restore Failed On a couple of occasions recently I have tried to use System Restore when three or four restore points are shown to be available. The restores have failed with the message "System restore failed to restore your computer. Please try another Restore point" (wording may not be exact). Choosing a different point had no effect. I have Norton System Utilities which has a known problem in this area, but I have checked the Norton feature which causes the problem and it was disabled anyway (Disk Health sensor in System Doctor).     - System Resource or Windows Protection Error Since MSN automatically downloaded 8.5 I have been having intermittant erors with Windows ME. I either get msg that there are crirically low resources or a Windows protection error. In case of resources critically low cannot select "ignore" have to select "close". System then displays msg that a program has caused an error in "DIBENG.DLL" which I close out of. Sometimes system works normal but many times Instant Messenger aborts and system does not respond normally and must restart computer to either regain IM or system functionality.     - Win ME, MSN messenger and ie6 errors I have reformated, reinstalled Windows ME, IE6, MSN6, all necessary drivers and updated everything necessary. It should be a smooth running PC ! The fact is I am plagued with ie errors, crashes, freezes and unexpected reboots. I think MSN is the problem. I deleted messenger and ran the PC for a day with little or no problems but as soon as i reinstalled it the problems started again. Anyone else had the same problem?     - Cookie File Installed new harddrive, using Partition Magic so I can boot from either drive until after I get the new one set up with everything. Problem is I managed to copy my cookie file from the old drive to the new one by way of using one of the partitions. Can't seem to get a copy of the index.dat file from the old drive (cookie folder) to the new one, neither one will let me get a copy of it. Any help is appreciated.     - not sure what the problem is I have Internet Explorer 6 on my computer. It is difficult to connect if my computer has been inactive for a while. You have to either shut down the computer and wait a minute or two and then try to connect or restart the computer. Then you can keep an internet connection for about 30 minutes sometimes more sometimes less. I have had my phone lines tested and they are fine. I have called my ISP for tech support and they say it's not them with the problem maybe its me. What would be causing this? I can only get a good fast internet connection if I shut down or restart my computer. Then if it slows down and bumps me off if I restart/shut down my computer and reconnect I get a good connection.     - Zachd[ms] Win Media Player 9 and Codecs O.K.....I did what you said and everything listed at the site you directed me to. It said to reinstall WMP9 over existing one. I reinstalled WMP9 and nothing happened, It also said to open the file in "mplayer.exe" to find out what codec is missing instead, it gave me a message stating: "MMSYSTEM006 There is no driver installed on this system".     - Strange Startup Message For the past 6 weeks or so I've notice the following message when booting up (everytime): "Please wait while setup updates your configuation files". Then the startup continues and concludes to the normal desktop. And everything thing seems to run okay after that. Should I be getting this message on every startup?     - IPHLPAPI.DLL the IPHLPAPI.DLL file will not open, please locate the file to determine the problem I get the above message when the machine boots up. The only reference I can finsd so far is related to this happening when a program may be running. Is it a case of shutting down some of the things in start up with msconfig until I find the errant program. This first occurred whilst trying a Windows Update.     - Msimn has caused an error in directdb.dll I keep getting the error message listed in the subject line whenever I start Outlook Express 6. I have not added any new hardware or software. System is virus free. If I reboot my system 5 or 6 times, I can eventually get my email to download before the error message comes up. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? It's not in the Knowledge Base. All I found was "msimn has caused a page fault in direcdb.dll" which only deals with Outlook 5 beta and importing mail. Not any help. Thanks!     - Widws ME not functioning properly The "IPHLPAPI.DLL" file cannot start error message appears. What is this file? It locks up when I try instaling software with the message "Windows is installing your new software" but does not proceed. I cannot access downloaded files and it locks up again. Restart is not responding so I have to manually turn off the computer and it seems to take a very long tiome to bring up the control panel. Please help.     - What is MPREXE.exe ? I just installed Norton Personal Firewall on PC with Windows ME and have RoadRunner internet service (cable modem). A security alert has popped up about 20 times now for MPREXE.exe trying to access IP addresses on the internet on port 137. Each time I set a rule to block access to that specific program and IP address. After about 20 times of blocking access, each to a different IP address, I set a rule to block all access to all IP addresses and all ports. I did a reverse IP address lookup for some of the addresses and found some in the U.S. and one in Korea (I didn't recognize any of the site names and didn't go to any of them). MPREXE.exe is a small (28k) program file in the c:\windows\system32 folder. Does anyone know what it is and why it wants so much access to the internet?     - REINSTALLING WINDOWS ME I reinstalled Windows Me and followed the instructions. After a few tries, it reinstalled clean. On the WINDOWS ME CD Disk I followed instructions and recommendations. The part where it said: Install into Windows? or Windows.000, I reinstalled it into WINDOWS. Success finally. But now I have two huge files WINDOWS and WINDOWS.000? The WINDOWS.000 works fine, as far as I can See! But the WINDOWS file is taking up over a Gig of space. Can I safely delte the original WINDOWS File to pick up space? WinFax Pro does not support the distinctive ring feature for some modems, including the Lucent Win modem that came installed in my HP 7940. The easiest solution is to replace the Lucent Win Modem with one that will support distinctive ring for WinFaxPro. Symantic gave me a list of modems that don't work, but not a list of those that do.     - Use of Shift Keys with Internet Explorer Aloha, This is my 3rd post to the board trying to find some help with this small problem I have been having with my computer for about 2 1/2 weeks. It never happened before, but now, when I have Internet Explorer open and am viewing a web page, and then I open another window, such as this window I am typing into now, an email message or just a simple microsoft word document, as soon as I hit the shift key, the window minimizes and I am returned to the Internet Explorer page as my view. So for example, I opened up the Microsoft newsgroup message board and then clicked the "post" key to post this message. As soon as I hit the shift key to try and capitalize a word in this document, this window minimized and then returned back to the newsgroup page. If I hit shift again, it does not bring this window back on top. I have been told to try cleaning my old keyboard and then to replace my keyboard. I just purchased a new one today and I still have the same problem. I was also told to simply reboot my computer to fix the problem, but that has not helped either.     - Strange page I had this problem pre-format and now it has returned post format...for some reason a strange icon is showing up on my desktop and it simply bears "~" under the icon. When I attempt to open it I am of course prompted to find an application that can read it and even if it does open it is all gobbly-gook. I did change the name to ~.htm and when it opened I was surprised to see it still contained a lot of goobly gook, but the rest was interspersed with my entire address book!     - Fixing Favorites settings When I use the Favorites menu (the one located above the Start) and I select a web page, Internet Explorer is launched, but instead of taking me to the be page, the address line has the location on my hard drive where the web page info is kept, and instead of a webpage, there is the written code including the URL address. When I use the Favorites on an IE page, however, (which is exactly the same to look at), it launches the webpage just fine. I assume it is just a setting that needs to be adjusted that tells the computer to insert the URL and not the the location on the hard drive, but I have no idea how to do that. Also, a related issue (I think) is that many web pages have links in their menus... For example, MusicMatch (a music software program) has was to link to its webpage in the menu... for upgrades and such. But when I click those links, instead of launching a webpage, I get a blank IE page with nothing in the address page. The cause of this problem would seem to be related to the problem above.     - Schizophrenic Problem Hello,Installed a theme called Grand Canyon which caused a error in DLL.Host. Rebooted and used GoBack,the unit works with one exception a yellow exclamation appeared in Device Manager for USB Security Device.This seems to be a password protection for Flash Drives (pen type) and Secure Digital cards.Both items I use.Tried to install driver received "Driver Not Found",have backup copies of all drivers redirected installer to the backup.Started to install using backup and received a Error Loading JupitCo.dll"Can not find specified file".Installation continued and upon rebooting no files were installed.Is there a way to bypass the"can not find error screen"?If not can I drag and drop the files in the appropriate folders?Not sure but thought that .inf file(1) into the Inf folder,.sys(1) into the system32 folder and .exe(2)and.dll(1) into the System folder.     - system freeze Hi,I recently installed Windows Me, at the initial setup it ran fine.I installed a couple of hardware devices,soundblaster live 5.1,printer,scanner, I also installed kodak easyshare, which seemed to be a problem then uninstalled it.The system freezes if I shut it down and leave it for a while it'll run fine again. The cpu temp runs around 68 degrees celius, and system temp around 58 degrees. Would try doing the one that got stuck, on its own, if it
is that important to the computer. My computer also does
this, so i usually do what i have already stated or just
wait and eventually after about an hour it is completed.

See: Install stops at 0% when using the AOL Browser

There is a known issue with the AOL browser not being able to install
updates from the Windows Update site. Try using Internet Explorer for
the updates and remember to temporarily disable your antivirus and any
other 3rd party software that is related to internet activitiy ( pop-up
stoppers, cookie blocker, download "helpers", etc. ).
