I am having problems to run to complete the
updates. It gets stuck near the setup process
with black screne- no error message.
1.Can I run the individual files in the same sequence
as are in
\Content\Win9x\WinME\updates folder.
Will it be ok?

2. Do these folder include all updates.
\Content\Win9x\common\IE6SP1
\Content\Win9x\common\DirectX9b

3. Any further advice please on these
\Content\Win9x\common\MDAC2_8 .....???
(sorry i am not familiar with MDAC)
\Content\Win9x\common\Support
\Content\Win9x\common\WMP

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

How to obtain and use the Windows Security Update CD (February 2004)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833242
----

Anyone thinking of using the MS Security CD rather than downloading the
patches from the Windows Update site might want to consider the
following:

a) The first action of the Security CD is to wipe out all pre-existing
System Restore
points, due to the installation of the 290700 patch for System Restore
irrespective of whether previously installed or not.
b) Internet Explorer is upgraded to IE6 SP1, regardless of whether the
user
wishes to stick with IE5.5 SP2 (not that I recommend that users should
stick
with IE5.5 SP2).
c) Windows Media Player is upgraded to WMP9, irrespective of any wishes
the user
might have in this respect or whether their hardware can usefully use
this cpu
intensive application
d) DirectX is upgraded to DX9.0b, regardless of whether this might cause
problems. Again this shouldn't be a problem, but for some using older
hardware
it could be troublesome.
e) The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine remains unpatched. I strongly
urge all users of this CD to then visit the Windows Update site and
install
the latest version (3810).
f) The CD does not apply the latest (or any?) cumulative updates for IE6
SP1
and again I strongly urge any users of this CD to visit the Windows
Update site afterwards and install the latest IE cumulative update.

The most important: providing free telephone support to those who
encounter
difficulties when installing these security updates.

It is possible to copy the required Update files to the HD and to edit
the INI file controlling the process thereby more finely controlling the
update process. This is not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced.
Our colleague Shane has the details for doing this.

I suggest repeating the Update process on a cleanly booted machine,
i.e., when nothing but the nine core WinME processes are running. Turn
off temporarily any AV tool, esp. Certainly without the BIOS AV tool
running!

Repost with the EXACT error message if needed:

Quite happy to pass on my experiences, Jack. Must point out though it's the
INF files, not the INIs that need editing.

btw yesterday I burned a copy of the cd with WMEresume.inf lightly edited
and renamed WMEsetup.inf (and the same for 98se). Works fine.

Thanks for correcting my faulty memory, Shane.
I suspect you may get more requests than you ever imagined.

Kudos to you, again. Fine work!

What were we talking about, again, Jack?

Perhaps I should make use of the free web space from my ISP. I only came
back to pass the information on re 'fixing' this cd. I'm trying to reduce
the time I spend in front of a computer. Jeez, I used to be fit and healthy!

Thanks, Jack, your kind words are, as ever, much appreciated.
