Blue Screen on Reboot Only
Hi,
I've just formatted a system and installed a fresh copy of ME, nothing
else.
However, when I try and Reboot, I get a blue screen saying: "You
computer failed to reboot. You need to power off the computer wait a
few seconds, and power it back on"
Sure enough that works. If I choose Shut Down, that works fine also.
Is there anything I can do to prevent this blue screen on Reboot??

Internal drive listed as "Removable Disk"
Hello again Good Folk
My primary slave drive (D) is having its parameters misquoted in My Computer
and Windows Explorer. It's identical to my primary master (an80 GB Samsung
which is listed correctly)--is the same age, and was installed at the same
time. Right after the computer was assembled this past March, I noticed D's
capacity was being misreported as 50-some-odd GB--a problem resolved by
reformatting it; but now, since I've had a new motherboard installed, D
appears as a "removable disk" and neither "total size" nor "free space"
figures are shown.
Both of the other hard drives in my computer (D's twin C, and E--an old
8GB Maxtor which is set up as a secondary slave) have grayed-out Windows
files (ffastun.ffa, ffastun.ffl, ffastun.ffo, ffastun0.ffx) on them that
have always been missing from D--and I'm wondering if the omission is
relative.
The drive functions okay but is slow like a USB external and isn't listed in
the default "search" offering and other places where I'd sure like to
see it (ie, there's no other info for it in System Information beyond
"removable disk"). I've run this glitch by my tech and he just scratched
his head! Is there some way I can fix this?

Help-A drive stays running!!!
Hello,
Got a big problem. A drive is coming on at boot up and
staying on ! This is really screwed as it affects doing
anything with C drive. Wierd as no disk in drive, but the
light is lit up.
Can't remember where the setting is to not make it come
on a boot. That may stop it.P3 733 with Win ME.Used to
have it off. May be something stupid, hope so.
Any help be glad to get. Feel dumb to not know where it is.

UP AND RUNNING ON XP!!!!!
Hi All.....
Been a long bloody day, but am now up and running (with a lot of tweaking to
do) on XP!! FINALLY!! My special thanks to Mike and Noel for their
patience and help.
You should see the case that Willy picked out for me.......a teenager would
kill for it, lol!! Black and silver with royal blue lights
glowing....ROFL!! When he first showed me it, I damn near died and almost
went to boring beige. But Ron thought it would be fun and to go for
it.....so I did. Didn't know I would get one side partly translucent with
neon lights tho.
Got a wireless keyboard and mouse.....hard to get used to this keyboard at
the moment. Put my old Windows95 monitor (about 14") on the WinME computer
and I can access that now. What a hassle it is, though. I got the new one
yesterday, but didn't know where to start in. So the office looks like a
whirlwind hit it as I am rearranging everything. And finally getting rid of
some of the clutter.
I think I am going to really enjoy this......but the dam keyboard is driving
me nuts!!
FIRST QUESTION: How do I change the font in Outlook Express???? I hate
this courier font. I put in Arial but it didn't do anything. Change it to
Western ISO? It is set at Western Windows IIRC.
Yes, Mike and Noel......I made sure SP2 Firewall was on, grin. And I
transferred EZ Trust over via CD and opened it before going online. Got
AdAware & SpywareBlaster on here as well. Willy admitted he hates Norton
too and said I knew so much about malware that he wasn't worried and to use
one of the freebies.
Aha....just found QuickLaunch toolbar. Will get that on here. I have some
programs that I don't know what they are. OH.....just checked and I have
InCD....neat!! I recall you guys talking about it.
Off to have a bite to eat. Been at this since noon and Ron is making
supper. I forgot the real world existed, lol.
Cheers.....Heather Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272874
WinTasks 5 Professional
This one just released by "a-squared", after partnering with 'Uniblue':
*WinTasks 5 Professional*,
a power utility aimed at security first and then some.
Is the discounted price of $29.97 worth it?
I have a-squared installed and working for me quite nicely.
Any opinions on this newbee are most welcome.

Attention "Mart"--Re: Computer Boots to Black Screen
Hi Mart,
Seems forever since I posted my plea for help--but finally, after eight
weeks of downtime, I'm fixed up and back in business. Because it never once
booted black for him, my tech was so perplexed with my problem that he
finally sent the box out to the motherboard manufacturer who told him that
the MB was cooked--literally.
Is it assumed these days that everyone lives and computes in air-conditioned
comfort?? When during my troubles the experienced guy who built this
computer had me remove the side to blow air across the works in case it was
overheating, I noticed there was only one fan inside--a little flat one on
top of the processor. This machine did not have an exhaust fan mounted on
the back of the box! Every other computer I've had did--even the old
horizontal version--and I ran them all throughout the hottest
non-air-conditioned MOzark summers without burning any of them up. This
one--assembled just last March--made it fine through June, then limped into
July and quit working!
At any rate, I now have a new motherboard, two housing exhaust fans, and a
hardware monitoring program to keep tabs on internal temperature. I also
have a new issue with the way Windows Me recognizes hard drives--but
I'll put that question in a fresh post.
Once again, I thank you for your kind response.

HeelNrg and DMA
People,
And I know you are out there,
I read the entire post from this chap about DMA and his PC. Now, he was the
original poster, an he must have had 20 replies. Unfortunately not one of
them was his, nor was I able to follow logically what happened.
So, here goes:
My DMA is *not* checked off. I *think* when I do that, something bad
happens (been years). But, as I've been burning stuff on DVD, any speed
increase I can get would be much appreciated.
I read part of M$ knowledge base on this, but it took me somewhere else when
I clicked, and pretty much gave up. So, knowing that DMA stands for Direct
Memory Access, that sounds like something I want. Avoiding middlemen, that's
true to my cheap heritage.
But, maybe there is something intrinsically wrong about my ancient system
board, bios, and chipset that will take 6 hours to fix if I do something
wrong, again.
Is there a simple answer to someone that understands this concept. Obviously
the easiest is to just put that checkmark in, restart, and see what happens.
But, this old dog has a sneaky suspicion that's a BAD idea.
Anyone care to make a suggestion? Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272848

after installation I was instructed to re-boot system. System will only

a variety off apps suddenly die when trying to open data files - help!
Just reinstalled WinME.
Many applications die suddenly as soon as I try to open a file from
within them.
So far I notice this using all of the following:
- Opera
- WinAmp
- Zinf
- WMP
- Sound Recorder and a few others.
MS Office apps open files OK.
Never seen anything so quasi-transversal across various apps.
Notice that there is an antivirus installed (clamwin), but it does not
have a general "desktop"protection, i.e. files are no all automatically
inspected when being opened. It would have been a nice failure point,
but it isn't!
Where do I look for something rotting in my system?

Operating System Problems

I have Windows ME already installed as my operating system. Last year, I
tried installing Windows XP on my computer but I wasn't successful. I have

My computer has an Intel Celeron Processor. So basically what's happening

them at startup. However, my real selection is only hte Windows ME as if I
select the Windows XP, it basically freezes my computer. So I would like to
do is any of the following (whichever may be easier): just run one operating
system; either Windows ME or Windows XP only, whichever is easier. And can
anyone here help me with a detailed instruction to do this. Thanks in

enable DMA
After my recent problems with my CD RW drive I decided to invest in a new DVD
writer as the old CD writer was just that - old. I have had nothing but
trouble with it and Nero6 since (the details are not important at the
moment). The PC store advised me to ensure that DMA was enabled on the new
drive. So, not wanting to appear stupid, I went home and checked on the
Internet as to how to do it. Everything I read says that, for WinMe you go
device manager/CD rom and click on the +/double click the icon for that
drive/settings and there is a box for DMA to check. Not on mine there isn't.
There are boxes for disconnect/sync data transfer/auto insert on the left
and two greyed-out ones for removable and Int13 unit on the right. Then below
are the drive letter (E) and a space for reserved drive letters.
Running the Nero Info Tool shows me that the standard D drive (CD Rom) is
DMA enabled but shows a question mark next to my new drive.
I have looked at every other item in device manager and can't find anything
referring to DMA (I really am running WinMe).
Can anyone help me find out how to do it please?
Thanks

Can't open folders, run applications, internet...close to reformat
I identified a minor trojan (trojan.startpage), and quarantened it. I also
purged the systemrestore folder because the trojan was there as well. But
I'm at the end of my rope with this machine; I'd love to get files off it and
reformat, but I cannot access a network. Basically, it boots up, but it
effectively freezes after bootup. The mouse will move, but most programs
won't open, inlcuding folders and My Computer. (AIM will log on, but none of
its features operate). Basically, anything that requires my intitiation will
not work. I often have to Ctrl + alt + del to stop a non-responding program.
Eventually there is nothing left running and it still won't operate. There
seems to be something currupt in windows explorer. It will open in safemode,
and operates fine, but of course operation is limited. There are very few
startup programs (really only AIM and the defaults), and I've done Ad-Aware
scans and Norton AV scans to no avail. What next? Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272609
Create date directory
I need to get a text file listing of file names and creation dates for a
folder.
Basically, I want to be able to do something like DIR > X.TXT but have the
dates be the creation dates rather than the modified dates.
I find that I can open the folder and, after selecting Views -> Details, I
can then select Views -> Choose Columns and get what I want, but I can't
find any way, from there, to get a text file of the resultant listing. I
thought I remembered a way to print these things (other than by graphics
capture and printing that), but after looking around, I'm guessing it wasn't
Windows I'm remembering it from.
Any ideas?

W32.Licum worm over and over
Hi:
Running NAV 2005 with updated antiviral definitions. Norton successfully
quarantines W32.Licum on an almost daily basis. SP1 is up-to-date. I run a
few other programs to protect my system (Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot S
& D, etc.) and everything else is clean. Symantec refers me to Microsoft
Security Bulletin MS03-026. When I try to download the patch, I get an error
message telling me that Win Me does not require this patch! I do not have a
firewall: can someone recommend a freeware firewall utility that will
seamlessly work with NAV 2005? Lastly, is there another reason(s) W32.Licum
keeps appearing on my system? Quarantine folders are deleted, as are temp
folders with a Cleanup! dump before rebooting. I tried expanding my
protection by upgrading to Symantec's Internet Security 2005, but I could not
get a clean installation of LiveUpdate or some shared files and had to revert
back to NAV 2005.
Thanks.

PC3000
What happens if you have a hard disk which spins erratically, or the
heads are making clicking noises, or maybe everything seems fine but
the disk is just not recognized by the PC or any other tool? Since you
don't have access to the disk you may conclude that it is due to the
controller board failure or some mechanical or physical damage, and
whatever you try to do to fix the drive is then driven simply by your
intuition because you have no information about the status of a drive
that is simply not recognized by your utilities.
But help is at hand, because the PC3000 is a unique tool that can
communicate with the drive in such situations by using vendor specific
commands to switch the drive into kernel mode - the one that is used by
the manufacturer to provide read/write access to the firmware on the
controller board and firmware modules, such as Microcode Overlays, HDD
Configuration Tables, Defects Tables, SMART Attributes, Security
Subsystem, Adaptives, etc., stored at the disk service area
(maintenance track) at negative cylinders. When the drive is not
recognized by the PC, it basically means that the HDD cannot boot up
properly due to electrical failure, mechanical/physical damage or
corruption of the firmware modules on the controller or the disk
service area (maintenance track). By using PC3000 you can diagnose the
drive and determine exactly what is causing the failure. Furthermore,
in our experience more than 50% of such failures (and for some
particular HDD models over 90%) are due to firmware related problems
that can be resolved using PC3000. You can simply reload firmware
modules onto the damaged drive or just use one of the PC3000 built-in
fixes available for the most common failures of the particular HDD
model, such as Fujitsu MPG's firmware damage, Maxtor's G-List/P-List
corruption (e.g. 'Maxtor N40P' and 'Maxtor Athena' family), Western
Digital's S.M.A.R.T. counters overflow and others.
PC3000 supports 3.5" ATA/SATA Hard Disk Drives from the following
manufacturers :- Maxtor/Quantum, Seagate, Western Digital, Fujitsu,
IBM/Hitachi, Samsung, Conner, HP, Kalok, Teac, Daeyoung, and Xebec.

It was fine at 8pm Friday and Saturday morning, nothing.
I have run through the troubleshooting article (273738) all to no avial.
Safe mode works fine, my boot disk works fine and my install disk of windows
ME also boots the PC up ready for a fresh install.
3 things I am a bit concerned about
i) scanreg /restore tells me that no restore points exist!!??!!
ii) The 'Launch System Restore' button in msconfig tells me 'System restore
cannot protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and try system
restore again.'
iii) Periodically scandisk keeps telling me that the reported free space on
my C and D HD's is incorrect. Even if I take it up on the offer to fix the
problems they see to come back. Scandisk reveals no other problems on either
drive.
I am getting to the end of my tether with this now. If I have to reinstall
windows ME it won't be a problem but I cannot understand why if safe mode
works this should make any difference.
Any advice would be welcome. Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272521

comctl32.dll
My desktop running windows ME is not starting . It was running the best
it had in months and then started freezing this week and I had to shut it
down manually a few times. When I started it today, it went thru a scan and
then showed a blue screen with error message: comctl32.dll file cannot
start. check file to determine problem. then I had to shut it down
manually.
How do I get to that file and how do I check what's wrong. Is there
something called an SFC with windows ME and will this help. In reading
various start up problems on the MS site I found directions for SFC but it
was for XP. And it wasn't the same problem but I thought ME also had a SFC.
I could not find my exact error message on the MS site. Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272493

It's getting a bit tiresome seeing one misguided American after another with
their cutsie little yellow or red-white-blue ribbons on their outsized SUVs.
Yeah, I guess it's the thing to do; maybe part of that whole soccer-mom
culture. Unfortunately, the only thing they demonstrate is that the person
behind the wheel is a clueless, gullible, misguided, nitwit.
If foreign invaders landed on our soil, as we have done in Iraq, I would be
the first one to take up arms and repel them. (I suppose that would make me
an 'insurgent' by OUR logic.) This, and other aggressive governments have
always done their utmost to make it APPEAR as if committing yourself to kill
in feuds on distant shores that have nothing to do with the welfare of the
citizenry is somehow patriotic.
It is not.
Enlisting in the armed forces, in the absence of a real and impending
foreign threat, is no different that hiring yourself as a paid assassin . .
the only difference is, you're not getting paid enough. But let's take a
realistic look at exactly WHO joins up in an all-volunteer army.
The first group are those who join (during peacetime) for the benefits: to
get an education, or because it seems a reasonable career path. Consider
carefully! Realize that you are gambling with your humanity. Once you sign
that form, you sign away your right to say: "No, that is an atrocity." You
put your abilities, including the ability to kill, at the disposal of proven
liars, psychopaths . . . enemies of humanity. Do you think that every German
soldier in World War II who helped load Jews into cattle cars was a
cold-blooded killer? Most were poor kids, just like you, who got caught up
in the patriotic frenzy. Once you're in, you're IN. You lose the ability to
stop killing until they tell you so. This not only makes you less than
human, it makes you less than an animal, for even the animals retain their
freedom of self determination.
The second group are the simple minded, who fall for patriotic entreaties
about defending democracy, Mom, apple pie; in other words, all the
traditional government propaganda. Do you think Soviet lads subjugated their
neighbors throughout the world because they thought the Soviet Union was an
EVIL empire? No, they were fighting for MOM, and whatever passes for apple
pie in Russia. Step back and examine the lies your government is handing
you, and ask yourself if they have the ring of truth. Do you want to be one
of the murderers in uniform who opened up on their fellow citizens at Kent
State? When you put on that uniform, you give up all autonomy, and become
nothing more than a weapon, to be used for whatever evil purposes the
scoundrels in government demand (and, if you look carefully, you will
discover that the only interests THEY serve are those of the big businesses
that own them.)
Finally, you have the hard-core psychopaths. These are the people who WANT
to kill. Murder, torture, rape; THESE are the American values upon which
THIS group is focused. The cause doesn't matter, they're after the thrill
that only warfare can provide.
Just remember: killing for George W. Bush, or for George H.W. Bush, or for
Lyndon B. Johnson, or for Richard M. Nixon is not the same as defending
yourself, your family, your friends, or your country. Don't be a dupe. Don't
Enlist!
Remember -- supporting the troops means supporting Bush aggression,
profiteering, and war crimes. Here's an idea: why not take those ribbons,
dip them in blood, and mail them to the White House?

Windows Temp Files
I am having some trouble and it's driving me batty.
I use Windows ME
I always keep the folder cleaned out daily.
I tried to delete all files in my TEMP folder and there
is one that it won't let me delete. The file is just a image file.
It gives me an message
"Can't delete file may be in use." (I have also tried to
rename it and moving it)
So what I did was tried to delete the rest not
including it and then I will get another file
that is says, is in use also a image file. Then
It won't let me just close the window I have
to do the Alt Ctrl Del and end task. Then
open it again. Then it will let me delete some more
of the others. Until it stops again.
What could be the problem?
Any help would be appreciated! Tag: WinMe Outlook Express Tag: 272449
