A glitch has entered my sound functions. When executing a cold or warm boot
or reboot my opening sound blows me away (Max volume). It is as if my sound
settings at closure (low) are momentarily disabled during startup. After
window completes its startup the sound levels return automatically to
"normal" (low). Dell Dimension XBS 1000r , OS Windows ME, and Dell SB Live
OEM sound card. Recent software additions were Microsoft Windows Security
Update CD dated Feb 2004, which upgraded my Windows Media Player
automatically. Need help. Thanks

This is probably because the default user settings are set to 100% - which
is normal.
Try reducing the volume of the physical controller, and using the icon
control for 'fin tuning' rather than total control.

Thanks for reply. I must have not been clear, I am not talking about the
media player slider volume or icon controls, the Play controls (main, wave,
midi, tad-in, etc are all set to almost minimum at shut down. The loud
sound is the "Windows default Opening greeting". After which all windows
sound schemes return to normal (almost minimum) without any action by me. A
further example is when the modem is connected to voice mail the tad sound
slider jumps almost to max volume. I never use voice mail so this is not
the problem. The media play is not being used when I boot up. I only
mentioned it suggesting that the unsolicited upgrade may have corrupted some
of my sound files and I do not known how to reverse the upgrade to test if
that is the problem. Your statement that "default user settings are set to
100%" is confusing to me.

Not that I seem to sound condescending, but turn the sound down on your
speakers, then readjust all your volume controls to be at a 7-8 level
and mute the ones you don't use.

So am I! (where did I mention Media Player?)
The sound scheme in the Default user comes into play before the windows
logon is completed, and depending on your sound drivers can last until the
quite late in the screen refresh after the logion is completed - This has
NOTHING to do with WMP!
Try this - not sure whether it'll work or not....
Reboot, and instead of logging on, cancel the logon request (if there's no
logon request, once rebooted, use the Logoff... option at the Start button)
then adjust the settings there - reboot again and see if that makes any
difference.
