    - What the hell XP running along apparently fine, Diskeeper pops up as it is wont to do to inform that a Chkdsk is scheduled. Next time I bootup chkdsk runs then XP won't go online! Reboot to ME, online no problem. Back to XP, restore the registry, no change. Re-install the modem software, same ol' same ol'. Rather than get sidetracked I restore the image from 5 days ago.     - Flash player ... wont run - Am I doing something wrong .... Clean install of ME with all patches etc - works fine ... running AVG (free anit virus - default options) and spy-bot anti spy - (default opoins) real player , winamp Eveything works fine till I trtied visiting bbc website - which pointed me to flash player install - also nikon uk web site , also req flash player .. >From adobi site it seems to install - reports- 'done' but no 'end movie' and sites still direct me to install site .. ived downladed and installed the shockwave player - this works fine - Is there a issue with spy-bot or agv and flash player ? i dont get any promps saying its been blocked .. i assume i have some thing enabled thats stopping it running ? but what ?     - Windows defragger concerns in WinMe Hi I've been using Diskeeper Lite for some time on my WinMe machine primarily because the Windows defragger refuses to run except in Safe Mode. (In any case, I understand that the Windows defragger is merely a watered-down version of Diskeeper). Yesterday, I installed ScanDefrag and ran it. When it got to its third stage, the defragger refused to run complaining that there was evidence of disk damage which should be cleared up by running ScanDisk. However, as my computer had just emerged from a 9 hour (apparently sucessful) ScanDisk session as part of the ScanDefragger program, this recommendation was somewhat startling. Although I'm not very concerned about the non-operation of the Windows defragger as I use Diskeeper, I'm wondering is the problem a little deeper.     - No more 'support' for Windows ME ? I thought I read something that said Microsoft was going to discontinue support for WinME. I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean they won't be writing any more security patches, won't help write drivers for new devices, won't offer any downloads and updates?     - Hardware Profiles for 2 graphics cards I've heard that some people have two graphics cards in their PC. How do they select which one is operable and also prevent the two interfering with each other? I have an AGP graphics card in this PC (running WinME) and I have a PCI graphics card I want to put in and do some tinkering and comparisons. This is an old 500 Mhz PIII computer. The BIOS setup allows me to selectively enable/disable devices (such as a graphics card), but I also need to tell WinME which drivers to load and which not to load when it starts up. I've done things like that before using different Hardware Profiles in Windows98 (but I've never had two graphics cards in the same PC before). With the two HW profiles I could select which profile got used by having two sections in the CONFIG.SYS file with names that corresponded to the names of the HW Profiles. That way I got a boot menu that listed the two HW profiles to choose from. Windows98 was designed to work that way. That was before WinME. WinME doesn't allow you to customize CONFIG.SYS - so the boot menu thing isn't available. MY QUESTION: Has anyone here used HW profiles to make Windows choose between graphics cards? Do you have any tips or suggestions on the subject? Also, is there a way I can get some kind of boot menu where I can choose between the different HW profiles? Tag: What the hell Tag: 281777

    - Intermittent Dial-Up connection problems Hi Using a 30-month old 1.8GHz/256MB RAM machine running on WinME with Dial-Up internet connection. Starting to have problems establishing a dial-up connection which the ISP claims is not of their making. What happens is that the modem repeatedly fails to make a connection giving predominantly messages suggestion that the "line is busy" or "no answer". This failure to connect can persist for up to 100 attempts during which the machine has been rebooted several times. I have also found that trying a second ISP when the first has problems leads to exactly the same difficulties (which seems to agree with the view that it is not an ISP problem). The problem can, and usually does, go away as inexplicably as it arrived without having done anything to fix it (other than the occasional reboot). Can anybody suggest whether this is more likely to be a winsock32 or .vxd file problem rather than an indication that the modem is on the way out? TIA Paul Tag: What the hell Tag: 281749

    - ? regarding speed ME versus XP For nine months now I have been using WinXP Home SP2 on a Sony home computer. For about five years been using WinME on the other. My XP runs on a 3 Ghz Pentium 4. My ME runs on an 800Mhz Pentium 3. Here is the puzzler - benchmarks show the P4 running at least 3 times faster than the P3. But in opening any program the time to open is almost identical. For PSP it is around 13 to 14 seconds for each. Same for Photo Impact (another graphics program). Once they are open the P4 again outpaces the P3 by a goodly amount. My question is - is this normal? Or has Sony loaded so much of their stuff on the computer that this slows it down in opening programs? I have gone into WinCfg and had it load only the basic stuff, but doesn't seem to speed up the opening of programs any at all. Thanks, Tag: What the hell Tag: 281700

(with a baby and toddler and study please forgive my delayed response). thankyou for your response. i did try what you said, i.e. doanload a recommended scandefrag program file and let it run. I still has the problem of not completing the scan the only good it did was to inform me that i have 18 programs running!! (when ofcourse i have closed everything). do my anti virus and error guard programs make up for this many programs running or is something going on with my pc that i dont know about?! it has a mind of its own lately. it is 'microsoft millenium me' and since microsoft are wiping support for this product after july 11 do i take it that maybe i just need to replace it? is that why i am having these problems? or do i need a technitian to come and service my pc to stop those 18 programs running that prevent the 'scan disk' from completeing and hence my 'defrag' unable to continue. When I attempt to reboot my computer it hangs at the ME logon screen, but when I go back and reboot I can use the step-by-step option and have know problem with hanging.     - Windows Updates after a clean reinstall I've recently done a clean reinstall of Windows ME on a Dell Dimension 4100 using a Dell reinstallation CD (PC and CD are six years old). I'm looking for the least error-prone way of reinstalling the critical Windows updates. I would prefer a procedure that can be used after Microsoft drops support for Windows ME (this summer). I have the Windows Update installation history for this PC. I also have a recent Belarc listing of updates just prior to the clean reinstall. My internet connection is dial-up (no broadband). Reinstalling the updates would be easier if I had the Windows Security Update CD. According to the Microsoft Order Desk, this CD is no longer available. There are two options I'm considering. Option 1: On another PC, download the critical updates from the Windows Update Catalog. Burn the updates to CD. Option 2: Visit Windows Update and let it select the critical updates. After updates are installed, take a disk image and burn to CD. One question is common to both approaches. Should I first install WMP9 and IE6 (or is IE6 itself an update?). I started by trying to use Option 1 (Windows Update Catalog). The list of critical updates from Windows Update Catalog is much shorter than my installation history list. Many updates on my installation history are for earlier versions of IE and WMP. However, I'm concerned that the list from Windows Update Catalog may omit some needed updates. Also, there are a few updates listed from Windows Update Catalog that are not on my installation history. IE6 does not appear on the list from Windows Update Catalog. Has anyone yet posted the list and order of critical updates for a Windows ME clean reinstall? How shoud I proceed? PS: Prior to posting this, I searched the web for recommendations. This search included checking websites aumha.org, windowsreinstall.com, and crashfixpc.com. From the archives of this newsgroup I viewed the thread "Windows ME Update Order" posted in November 2005.     - WinMe measures CPU usage TWICE..both different! Hi I've been puzzled for some time as to why the multitude of third-party utilities that report CPU usage can be divided into two distinct groups: those that report LOW values and those that report HIGH values. (E.g. on my computer when lightly loaded, Process Explorer sees CPU usage as typically 2-4% while FreeMeter gives it as 50-70%). Now, I find that within Windows WinMe itself, two utilities are available which report very dfferent CPU usage numbers. These are WinTop (subtract the Idle usage from 100% to get the number that Task Manager reports as CPU usage in the NT OSs) and System Monitor.     - Colors flaky In April I installed Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 and the KB911562 and KB912812 updates. Since then the colors displayed by my browsers, both IE Explorer and Firefox, and also other programs (e.g. Adaware) have been flaky, inconsistent.     - Repost: Problem with "My Pictures" Folder Couple things: 1) After I sent the message below, I had a heckuva week and did not have time to check in but a couple times. Someone sent a reply, and I intended to offer thanks for that; but this morning, the reply in not showing up in my mailbox! SO... to whomever, I thank you for responding. 2) His reply had referred me to Control Panel/Tweak UI settings, to make sure "My Documents" was set as the first icon on my desktop. It really looked like that was the answer. Unfortunately, the setting was already correct; so that is not the problem that is screwing up "My Pictures." (BTW, I even tried setting the first icon to another folder and then resetting it to "My Documents"...but to no avail.) SO-- Does anyone have other ideas about my original inquiry? Motorola cable modem Linksys WRT54G wireless router One Motorola Vonage ATA plugged into the router One Linksys RT31P2 router/ATA Vonage adapter plugged into the router Yesterday I created a Windows workgroup using the ME machine and two XP laptops (one laptop using wired connection, the other using wireless connection). The only shared device is an Epson CX5800F multi-function printer on the ME machine. The workgroup set up okay, and the computers can see one another. I think the basic config is alright. However, printing from the XP machines to the shared Epson on the ME machine takes a long, long time - approximately 3-5 minutes. Printing from the ME machine, however, is immediate.     - MDAC Wiped Out by Auto Update Windows ME comes with MDAC 2.5. My MDAC got mysteriously wiped out, and with Windows ME you can't remove it and reinstall it. You have to reinstall Windows. So I did that. I have a fresh installation of Windows on a clean hard disk. Now, after a few days, I believe I discovered how the MDAC had gotten wiped out. The Windows auto-update did its thing and the next thing you know, I'm the proud owner of MDAC 2.7 SP1, wihch is only for Windows XP. That would be pretty good if it worked. Unfortunately, it looks like I have to reformat my hard disk again, in order to get any programs that use MDAC to work, including Visual Basic recordsets and a couple of programs that I have installed and that now give an error when I try to start them. The error says "Run time error 13 - Type Mismatch". I'm pretty close to certain that it was the Windows Auto-Update that did it. I uninstalled the two windows updates that were available to uninstall, but of course that's not going to undo the damage to the system's MDAC. Is anyone familian with this MDAC wipe-out problem with Windows Me? There's probably a 1 in 1,000 chance that it was caused by something other than the Windows Auto-Update, but I believe that's what did it. Now when I run a program source code in Visual Basic and tries to instantiate an adodb recordset, it says Server Component Can't Create Object. I use ComCheck to see what's happening with MDAC and it shows that my MDAC is now 2.7 SP1(XP). Tag: What the hell Tag: 281517

    - Missing Icons from Start Button - My Dad's computer is missing all of the icons on his start button. We did the normal defrag and scan disk but hasn't been able to run his visus checker (via AOL). He also apparently can't open up some AOL email documents. When someone came over to help troubleshoot it the following odd questions were asked. 1) Does he have a second computer attached to the first one (never) 2) When he called AOL they mentioned that he had called last Friday (the day the problem started) but he in fact didn't.     - Can't open PDF files Hi, I have the following problem: When I am on the internet and I click on a pdf file it will not open. The reaction that I get is a new window and a triangle in the left top corner, acrobat splashscreen doesn't start as it used to. It used to work and for an, unknown reason to me, it stopped working.     - Cannot boot to windows Hello, I am unable to start windows normally. When I turn on PC it gets past the windows ME screen then a black screen with a message - Cannot find System.ini. And says please insert emergency diskette or something like that. I have tried to start in safe mode and it goes to the "it is now safe to shut off computer". I have run a complete virus scan and it came clean and have tried a system restore....no luck. XP running along apparently fine, Diskeeper pops up as it is wont to do to
inform that a Chkdsk is scheduled. Next time I bootup chkdsk runs then XP
won't go online! Reboot to ME, online no problem. Back to XP, restore the
registry, no change. Re-install the modem software, same ol' same ol'.
Rather than get sidetracked I restore the image from 5 days ago. Back
online. Bloody chkdsk!
