I've had a continuing problem with my HP Pavilion system in
that it would halt and/or go into Restart on its own
especially after being on web sites or games that had a lot
of graphics. Everything I read said this was indicative of
a heat problem, power problem, or video card problem.

I ruled out heat and power so I ordered a new video card.
While waiting for it to arrive I learned enough cruising
these MS NGs to check the memory status in the BIOS. I
found that one of the two 64M chips was not working.
Replaced the defective chip with a 128M chip and my system
is running fast and I haven't had anymore random
halts/restarts. I cancelled the order for the video card
and lived somewhat happily ever after.

Job remarks, "Knowledge is sometimes better than book
learnin'."

Very good, Job!

You may wish now to obtain these tools:

Memory testers

DocMemory 2.0
http://www.simmtester.com

Memtest86
http://www.memtest86.com

You can use the "Swapfile in use" module of the MS System Monitor to follow
the status of the "Swapfile in use".
If it routinely exceeds ca. 10 MB, you may wish to consider increasing the
ram to 256 MB, etc.

Good job, Job!!!! Memory is cheap, go for the 256M......you can buy it with
the money you saved on the video card, lol.
Hey Jack!!! Good to see your smiley face here on the NG.
May you both have a very joyous Christmas season.

I wish you the happiest of holidays, snow or not, and that you get
everything you deserve --- well, maybe not a visit from Figgs just yet.
She's blaming her expected snow on you just now. I don't understand why she
would complain about being snowed in with her excellent helpmate, though.
She is the oddest duck in the Northeast.

You can change her misguided attitude by helping her install XP, I betcha'.

LOL!! You betcha we blame the US for all our lousy weather.....durned warm
air from the Gulf (as in below Texas). I am going out to the store to buy a
new printer (one left at a ridiculously low price......$70 Epson photo
one).....and the storm is just starting. Predicting nearly a foot of snow
(25 cm) by tomorrow.

And I do think that one of you should come up here and put that XP on here,
but about ready to give in and take it to a tech (shudder).....oh well, it
will help pay for his holiday presents, grin.

Merry Christmas to you and all of the *gang*.....we are having a proper,
snowy white Christmas......doesn't happen often.

All the best......Figgs

I DID!! But it is still coming up from the US of A......keep your blasted
storm-causing weather down in Texas or I shall be forced to reverse it and
have it dump on your teeny town. (VBG)

And another is on the way as well. However, you are getting the *benefit*
of an Alberta Clipper.....looks good on ya. (G) I was amazed at how cold
it is way down your way. Even in northern Florida.

For the price of the tech, Figgs, you could be on the phone to either Mike
or myself (I don't believe I jsut said that!) and get perhaps better
results!!

OK, you are on for that one. Besides, I can wish you a Merry Xmas at the
same time, grin.

I talked to a tech today and it is $50 to put on XP......and probably a few
more incidentals that would cost serious money.

Broke down and bought the Epson printer and Elayne bought one too which she
will pick up in Vancouver when she gets home. Wasn't much more than the
colour refills!! But mine is 8 or 9 years old and is a Canon BJC 250, which
E. says is cr*ppy!! (VBG)

What gets me is that you have to pay $25 for a cable for everything!! Mine
is the old 'scaasi'? type......and I will also pick your brain coz my HP
scanner is giving me a ton of errors!! Ron accidentally switched off the
circuit breaker while the computer was on......would that have done it? The
scanner wasn't switched on tho. Touchy things!!

Re XP.......when I read the package pamphlet, it sounds real easy.....then I
go to Gary Woodruff's site and it sounds real hard!! I have a lot of little
questions which I will gather together and fire off to you two.....like what
all to back up to CD's, etc.

Thanks, puss.....I appreciate that!! I will tell the whole world what good
guys you are!!

XX Figgs (and I think I finally got all my shopping done today.....yuck)

Figgs, tell us what you want to put the XP onto --- Home or Pro.
Post the hardware report from Belarc.
In either case, I suspect an upgrade or a clean install is a 1-2 hour task
at best, if your hardware is at all modern.
The principal issue is unusual hardware and non-existant drivers.
Gary's article is very good.

A gold-plated USB2 cable will cost $25, but a regular one will work fine.
Just unplug and reinsert it once a year to clean the finger contacts.

Did your "scaasi" intend "SCSI" ? If the scanner was unpowered during Ron's
unannounced "power outage", such failure is unlikely to have damaged the
scanner. Test on another machine, if possible.

I wouldn't let any of this unsolicited advice stop you from phoning N & M,
you understand. XP is very nice. All 32-bit system resources, eg.

You can do it, for sure.

Don't mention basements leaking, sigh!! After that, the dishwasher broke
and cost me some good Cdn. dollars to fix. So that is now a new roof, new
furnace, new washer (have that) and a fixed dishwasher. I am jinxed, I

And Mr. American Pie.....I live on Lake Ontario!! Not Superior.....however
that could describe my intellect and personality, bwa ha ha.

The Alberta Clipper (freezing cold) is absorbing your warm Gulf air and
producing a foot of snow. Just had an email from Indiana and that is what
they got.

Hi Jack!!

XP Home.....and it will be an upgrade. I will do up a new Belarc report but
I think everything is kosher re hardware.....put newer nVidia drivers on
which drove me nuts doing. I was a bit mystified as to FAT and NTFS, but
think I have that straight now.

My 'scuzzi' or 'scaasi' thingie is the 9 year old non-USB plug. I will have
to take a look at it and see if there is a USB one plugged into it. Or
perhaps that is the scanner.

I will try the scanner again (HP2200c Scanjet) and see if I get the multiple
errors. Worked up until yesterday, so no clue why all the errors.

Thanks for the advice......and I may call N & M anyway to wish them a Merry
Christmas.....(G)

But first, I have all the usual Xmas shortbreads and stuff to make, so won't
get to this until next week. My turn for the family dinner.

Cheers and have a good holiday.....Figgs

I know where you live and which of the Great Lakes is closest, but, you can
be assured that Superior is feeding some of that moisture and, I think I
mentioned, along with the rest of them.

Move down here and you wouldn't need a furnace, lol. It was 70 degrees
yesterday......of course, it is 28 right now....durn Canadian fronts!

We already have 2 feet of it on the ground in my parts, been like that
for a couple of weeks. That Texas stuff is supposed to be rain by the
time it gets here. I know that Heirloom concentrated to send you that
snow, special gift from the folks in Texas. He intended for it to reach
New Brunswick but his concentration waned along the way and the snow
turned to rain. To tell you the truth I would rather get snow than rain
at this time of the year. It's supposed to be +12° with tons of rain
for a day or so then it will plummet down to -20° the next day, it's
gonna be a real mess! But even then we wont be needing the armed forces
to tie our skates!

John
You know we'll never let you guys forget about the army having to dig
you out ;-) It's canadiana now.

Those readers of this thread who are clueless about its content may benefit
from this image:
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/adcbin/public/maps_index.asp?type=sfc&getarea=us_

Note that Loon's Tyler, Texas is directly connected by a "polar express" to
Figgs' "north of
Toronto" Eden ... that one under two feet of snow!

The jet stream map makes it even clearer:

This weather will make it very hard to get any stained glass artifact to
Canada in time this year. Maybe Easter!

I think I see "Copper Leaves" flying around in that jet stream, I must
have counted about fifty of them. Heirloom is going to be some upset
when he sees that. Looks like what we're getting here (NB) is being
sucked up from Florida, we may have oranges falling on our heads before
the day is over.
